Question of the Week: 104 - 3/24/2003

Have You Changed Your Mind About the War in Iraq?

Many people were initially for or against the possibility of a war in Iraq. Now that it is a reality and troops are on the ground, have you changed your mind or your position on the war?
Do you think that anti-war protests should cease? Do you think that an even greater divide has opened up between those who hold differing ideologies?
Do you think that the suspension of certain civil liberties for security reasons is appropriate during war time? Do YOU feel safer? Will the world be more secure because of this action?
What – if anything – concerns you the most about the war in Iraq?

I don't know I have mixed emotions we the US put this guy in power. We have to be responsible for that. We put the Taliban in power too. We helped Osma Bin Laden. Most of these repressive dictators came into power with our help even Hitler at first was helped by us. We tend to plant most the these guys we have to be responsible. I don't like seeing the bombardment of non-stop news on the Iraqi War Show. But I can't sit here and enjoy my organic dinner and knowing that so many in the world are suffering any more I'm glad that I'm not there. Our military are there and it would be nice if they could come home tomarrow but that can't happen we are into this to our eye balls and there is no turning back now. So I have to give our people as much support as I can. Goddess is watching over them. I don't support the men who sent them overthere, I just can't trust them, I don't even want to go there. We can't turn back the clock and undo what has been done, what's done is done. I only hope that it will end soon and hope is all that I have for that. I light a candle every night for our troops and the people of Iraq and hope that this will end soon and we all can heal. Thank Your Gunshythirdeye

I've read through and I am impressed with all of you. I admire the tolerance and peace of each response. I like it here. War is the ultimate symbol of failure. And sadly our troops and the innocent people of Iraq are the victems and pawns.I've seen enough wars I protested against the Vietnam war and we still lost 50, 000 troops. and in the end it was in vain. This war I have a name for this (war) I call it the war of lies because the leaders of both sides are lying. Yes we need to get rid of Saddam, but who will replace him and how long will it take before he has to be removed. Some of you said that we need to send energy of love and healing, to both sides. This war will not end soon I fear it is a horrible one. but we have to support our troops so that those who fell did not die for nothing. Thankx Gunshythirdeye

that this war is a complete and total abomination....there is NO liberating effort at work here....if there were, we would have bombed africa decades ago for circumsisng their women...if so, we would have bombed and invaded china decades ago for killing their female children...in fact, china supports child labor...do we go after them and demand regime change? no, instead we support their economy fully by purchasing every item in our retail stores from them....this is a tragedy...i do not support the troops, and i do not support their leader....to support one, is to condone the entire operation...and all of this from a pro-life, born-again christian draft dodger! the nerve of this man...remember america, he works for us...he is our employee, and we can fire him, if we feel he's not doing the job he was hired for...i see no evidence of a leader...on the contrary i see a fascist power freak who will lead this world into deep sorrow and loss...i hope his god is a forgiving one...

| Skeggi, The Morning News? | Apr 1st. at 9:09:14 am EST |

| MoonOwl (Egypt Lake, USA) | Age: 39 - Email |

So that's where you got your info. Sorry Skeggi, no offense, but....
Has anyone figured out which news source has the least bias to it? I'm gonna believe N.Z. news like I'm gonna believe USA's. With a grain of salt.
I doubt any of us will ever know the true figures. One innocent is too many. But even the Iraqi people know & accept the price of getting saddam & sons out.. I'm holding my opinions until this is over and the people of Iraq are not afraid to say what they really think for fear of getting killed or tortured by saddam.
Remember please that we are dealing with a madman that will drop bombs on his people and blame it on us, use cowardly methods (false surrender, military dressing in civilian clothes, using innocent children & women as protection, etc) to keep his grip on his Country. A real man and excellent leader isn't he. I'll take our President over him ANY day of the week. We can vote ours out (?! another rant) . The Iraqi's cannot.
Sorry, but I'm not going to believe anything coming out of a Country that isn't even there fighting and thinks it can report what's going on fairly w/out anti-war bias. Nor should anyone else.
I just wish I knew who was telling the most truths.
I figure it's somewhere in the middle of all that I read.
I pray for the troops and the innocent Iraqi people. This situation truly sucks.
In Peace & Tolerance..

If this war is about liberating the Iraqi people...
a. Why are the US using bombs containing depleted uranium which means that 50% of the population of some cities are expected to develop cancer within the next 10 years?
b. Why are they bombing water supplies, food stores and farms?
c. Why are the US planning to give control of the port of Um-Kasr to a major US company who Bush has been friendly with for a number of years?
Come on guys, it just doesn't quite add up does it. Your country is being run by a bunch of gangsters and your media is telling you a load of lies. For some info from a perspective other than Bush's, have a look at www.zmag.org www.aljazeerah.info or your regional indymedia.

| War To Bring Peace? | Apr 1st. at 10:49:40 am EST |

| wendella (kenosha, wi) | Age: 38 - Email |

How can violence against violence bring about peace? I have heard from media (radio) folks say that those of us against the war are for the killing of innocent lives and not peace. Peace is found within each and every one of us. If we cannot find that peace within, there will never be true peace in the world. Until all human beings find true peace within themselves, there will always be violence and war. Until people realize that the material things and money are less important than life, we will never find true peace or happiness in the world.
I am former military (so, naturally I will support our troops no matter what, but not agree with why they are there - its called compromise) . When I joined the military it was to instill some discipline in me which I lacked and to earn money to go to college since my family could not pay for me to go. I served during the Gulf War. I had a different mind set then also. My mind was clouded by MAN's thought processes and not my own. I am now a feminist, I still love men, but they need to change their ways of thinking or it will be to the demize of us all.
Sometimes I think though that this may be the God/dess's plan by influencing man's thought and eliminate some of the population on this planet. I know if I were her and have been treated the way she has as long as she has, I would want to clean house also. Be Gone you foul and filthy creatures?

| A Grandma's Prayer To Goddess | Apr 1st. at 12:41:11 pm EST |

| Granny (USA) | Age: 49 - Email |

Goddess, guide our troubled world to peace, help us to open our hearts and minds and spirits. Give the will to love and and forgive and forgive our selves. Help us to combine our energy to send it to Iraq to send that love and healing to ease the suffering. To hasten the end of this terrible war. To lessen the bloodshed and deaths. To expose the were abouts of this one Saddam Hussein and his inner circle of minions so that he can have the chance to stand before the world and be made to take responsibility for the harm that he has inflicted on his own people. And Goddess help us to thwart the efforts of the mad men in Washington D.C. from becoming the new Dictators of this 21st century. Goddess give us the will to hold the resonance to help the world to wake up and end war once and for all, so that we may live in peace and tolerance, and freedom and love, and enlightenment, and justice, and safety, and trust. And Goddess let this be everywhere on our Beloved Earth, we know that it will take a long time but help us to hold the candles and light new ones everywhere. From here to there and everywhere inbetween so that the warmth of the candles grows and warms the hearts of all and there is no war and bombs and terrorists and dictators and no more mad men with schemes, and hidden agendas, but only the love and the light and the light of the candles and the light of the pillars of light that we all are. Blessed Goddess and Beloved Horned God, All That IS, help us to empower our candles to light other candles and save or world. Blessed Be

If this war is about liberating the Iraqi people...
a. Why are the US using bombs containing depleted uranium which means that 50% of the population of some cities are expected to develop cancer within the next 10 years?
>To answer that the DU rounds are not the only thing that are in our military arsenal has Depleated Uranium. Our own tanks have Depleated Uranium armor on the Abrahms tanks. If it is going to turn Iraq green it will turn our troops green too. and our troops would be dying due to it as well. If this is happening I honestly can not say but it would be collateral damage if that was the case. And they have been around the metal ALOT longer than the people of Iraq. Our troops trained in it!! (please refer to: home.inreach.com/marine/usmc13.html )
b. Why are they bombing water supplies, food stores and farms?
> I have seen the satellite photos showing with out a doubt S.A.M. sites on the ground right outside the fence of those facilities. HELLO he is turning hospitals into make shift fortresses. you think THIS is beneath him?
c. Why are the US planning to give control of the port of Um-Kasr to a major US company who Bush has been friendly with for a number of years?
> The ultimate say will be by the Iraqi people and they have the option open to them to go with arab oil companies based out of other countries in the region. Those contracts are to manage the fields in the interum.
Come on guys, it just doesn't quite add up does it. Your country is being run by a bunch of gangsters and your media is telling you a load of lies. For some info from a perspective other than Bush's, have a look at www.zmag.org www.aljazeerah.info or your regional indymedia.
I read Aj-jazeera, abu dahbi, and several other arab news sites and watch them just as much as I do cnn, and fox. The simple fact is that they are ALL LYING. they are spewing the propoganda war that Iraq and the US are dictating and if you can't see that it is happening on both sides then you are acting truly gullable. the truth is in the middle. and it is there, you just have to want to look for it.

| Whats Your Plan For Peace Then?? | Apr 1st. at 1:40:37 pm EST |

| GO USA (DC) | Age: 25 - Email |

Got this from an email going around. But i really think that its right.
I see a lot of people on the television yelling for peace, but I have not heard of one plan for peace. "Books, not Bombs" won't work. The head mullahs won't let anyone read them. If they do, they poke their eyes out. Here's the plan:
1) The US will apologize to the world for ur "interference" in their affairs, past &present. You know, Hitler, mussolini, Tojo, Marshal Petain and the rest of them good old boys. We will never "interfere" again.
2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany, France, South Korea and the Philippines. They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No more sneaking through holes in the fence.
3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get thei affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of who or where they are. France would welcome them.
4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days in America unless given a special permit. No one from a terrorist nation would be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself, don't hide here Asylum would not ever be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers.
5) No "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "F" and it's back home baby.
6) The US will make a strong effort to become self sufficient energy wise. This will include developing non polluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling for oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while.
7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else.
8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not "interfere". They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides, most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if any, anyway.
9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an island some place. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, it would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.
10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer.
Now, ain't that a winner of a plan?

I am totally against this war, or any war for that matter. I am not totally convinced that "Liberation" of Iraq is Bush's ultimate goal. If there were not such a large oil supply in that country that the U.S. wants control of the Americans and the British wouldn't have invaded. I mean the Koreans have nuclear weapons of mass destruction as well, but you don't see them being threatend to disarm "or else". It reaaly maakes me wonder what Bush's true motive is. Lucas Smith
