What Makes You So Special?
What do you think is special about you? We generally aren't conditioned to believe that it is okay to think well of ourselves. But the point could be made that if we can't see what is 'special' about ourselves then we are constantly at the mercy of other people's opinions. We all know that compliments come and compliments go. So do criticisms. Claiming your own specialness allows you to keep your equilibrium through both the good and bad reviews of your life, behavior, work, religion or whatever anyone else feels free to comment upon.
Do the people in your life see your specialness? Have you dared to be open enough to show them? Ask a friend or acquaintance what they think is 'special' about you. Did you both come up with the same answers? And if you have always wanted to tell someone else what you think is special about him or her, here's your chance to do it!

|John (New Naumkeag) ||Age: 34 - Email |
When I first read this week's question, I was repulsed. Normally, I try to focus on God or others as the source of good or special things in my life so as to cultivate humility and to shift the focus of my soul from ego to the Divine.
But, it is a valid question. Not answering it is actually a sign of false humility. As the saying goes, "God doesn't make junk." We're all here for a reason, a Divine reason, and neither our common humanity nor our human limitations negates the fact that we are all, individually, special. So, and in no particular order ...
I AM SPECIAL BECAUSE:
--I am intelligent and intellectual.
--I can discourse at length but I can also pithily get to the gist of something.
--I am a good speaker and a good listener.
--I am a good writer and a good reader.
--I am a good teacher and a good student.
--I can be serious or whimsical.
--I have a kind heart.
--I am psychic and mystical enough to have a constant awareness of the Divine in and beyond all.
--I am experienced enough to know that the psychic and mystical sides of life are true but that they are not all of Truth Itself.
--I have lots of experience (good and bad) in living real life. For example, I went from a background of privilege to a homeless shelter, then to practicing law to a disillusionment with practicing law; then to running my own business to disillusionment with that. For some more examples, I have also experienced: the ordinary and the great, the mundane and the esoteric, travel and staying put, adventure and monotony; health and sickness, wealth and poverty, power and weakness, success and failure, triumph and tragedy, love and betrayal, marriage and divorce, births and deaths; foolishness and wisdom, despair and faith, sin and redemption, prayer and magic, free will and fate and free will again; ignorance and Truth. Looking back on the roller coaster of my life so far, I'm sometimes amazed at all that I have experienced. I havenŐt "done it all" or even come close, but I have (in retrospect) experienced a lot in life. Sometimes, I muse that about the only things I have not experienced are having children and dying (and dying I have come close to on several occasions).
--I (thus?) have a great amount of solicitude, empathy and sympathy for the vicissitudes and varieties of human experience, especially human suffering (both as consequence from choice and from events coming "out of the blue").
--I (thus also?) have a tremendous amount of certainty in the need for people to learn to rise above pain and pleasure --treating pain and pleasure as two sides of the same "coin" of life, which is meant to be used and not hoarded-- in order to live morally and in Truth.
--I (thus also?) continuously try to realize and live Truth.
--I can honestly say that I have no fear of death, that both suffering and joy are tolerable as well as necessary companions on the road of life, and that wasting the gift of this life is what I truly fear and is thus what I work to overcome.
(Others have remarked that all of the above statements are true about me. They also tell me that, with my talents and experiences, I should probably become a professor. If I did, I would probably go into philosophy or comparative religion. Then again, I may end up as a renunciate. Or, both. Whatever I do next, I just turned 34 on Saturday, 12 May 2001, and with all that I have been through, and with being alive and sane and regaining my health, being 34 years old has never looked better.)
I am also special because...
--I love coffee, tobacco, tequila and the other pleasures of life, with both moderation and gusto.
--I look good.
--I love life, in its ordinary and everyday parts as much as the extraordinary and esoteric parts.
--I am a Witch.
And, I am special because of the tremendous amount of blessings I have been given. I could write for pages about them, but here I'll just mention these: life, love, family, friends, teachers, students, joys, sufferings, freedom, Truth.

| If My Friends Knew I Was Writing This, I'd Never Hear The... ||May 15th. at 2:11:14 pm UTC|
|Stazya (Chicago, Illinois US) ||Age: 33 - Email |
If my friends knew I was writing this, I'd never hear the end of it. I actually have a fear of talking about myself or being talked about - anyone know the name of that phobia? But I know it's something I have to get over so here is my first attempt:
I'm special because I'm a teacher. I don't mean that's my profession (though I am a corporate trainer - it seemed a natural fit), I mean that there's something about me that makes people understand whatever it is I'm trying to explain. Not only do they manage to understand it, but they take what I've told them and move on to make it their own. People are drawn to me because of this. I spend my days listening to people, telling stories and learning what life has to teach me so I can share it with anyone that asks. Maybe it's really the seeker who's special and I'm just blessed to be the one they're looking for, but if my friends are to be believed, then this truly is my gift.
Ok, so I backed off a little at the end, but it was a start wasn't it?

Wow, this is a topic that most people are usually hesitant to talk about(including yours truly here:) ). I'm special because I've been blessed with someone to love and love me back. I've also been blessed with 3 wonderful animals that own me more than I own then(sarcasm: as if another being can truly own another being). Also I'm a Wicce who has found this remarkable religious Path and belief system. Some People would say if they were in my position that their life would be horrible but I think my life is great and am happy with it so far.

I think I'm special because I'm still *here*.
My parents split when I was 2 (after they gave my [still unknown to me] brothers up for adoption). My grandparents raised me until they died when I was a pre-teen. I had an abusive father who recently died. My mom joined the army, and has hardly ever been around. I went through 15 different homes/living arrangements and 10 schools. I didn't graduate. I've been through 4 jobs. I'm only 19. I'm paying for my own braces from working a retail job. I *still* don't know how I've gotten through it all.
I think I'm special because I'm still *here*.

I am special because, as one post put it, I am still here. After facing distaster after life-altering disaster, I haven't crumbled, I've become stronger. I am a fabulous mother, and I've stopped letting people walk all over me. I'm a typical Gemini, constantly of 2 minds, but I don't see it as a bad thing anymore, I see it as a blessing. It gives me tons of insight into people I thought I hated. I speak my mind. I'm not ashamed of who I am. I am mentally a few years behind my peers, but I didn't know it in school, my parents refused to tell me. I barely passed high school but I passed. I'm also the poster child for contradictions and it keeps my loved ones on their toes, lol. I learn quickly and easily and I love to have new experiences, even bad ones because they are the ones that make me strong. Mostly, I am special because I'm me and I adore who I am, even the side I exposed in the guilty secrets question.

What's so special about me? I have a cascade of auburn hair that hangs down past my waist. I have a wicked sense of humor and a quick intelligence. I can take complex ideas and distill them into their essence, for easy explaining. I'm a mover and a shaker when it comes to hobbies I'm passionate about--I can form communities and lead them to greatness. I have an innate sense of fairness and am willing to fight for what I believe in. I make buttermilk biscuits and cornbread from scratch. I'm a trustworthy and reliable friend, wife, sister, aunt. I love cats. I'm not afraid to cry during movies/TV shows. I believe in tolerance and kindness. So yes, I am special, and I'm worth it! :)

|Cherilyndria (East Troy, Wisconsin US) ||Age: 18 - Email |
I've been used in several relationships, but still believe in true love. My parents fight constantly and my dad is an alcoholic, but I'm Daddy's little girl and love him dearly. My mom picks fights with me, and I have the strength not to be irrationalin the situation. My friends are the most important people in my life. I love them so much more thatn I ever let on. I am extremely artistic, and would spend all my time drawing or making things. To be honest, I like sex ALOT, but I NEVER over step my boundaries, and always stay in control in the times most people lose control. I'm loud in my fashion and stick out in a crowd, but am actually very shy in person. I probably have missed a lot of opportunities, but know as long as the goddess and my sister are watching out for me, I will strive. I hate being alone, but I don't need conversation. I can sit with a close friend, even on the phone, for hours with nothing to say, and be happy. My best friend and I will sit on the phone for four to five hours an only talk for the first twenty minutes. I just need to know someone is there.

|Morrigan-Aa (woodbridge, New Jersey US) ||Age: 26 - Email |
I'm usually pretty humble, but heck, I'm damn special. I'm quite intelligent and have an awesome memory. I have a MPhil in literature and am currently finishing up my PhD. As a newspaper reporter, I've managed to capitalize on my two great abilities in this incarnation: writing and listening. I'm a middling gardener who takes joy in the dirt, a devoted jogger and yogini (sort of) and a dedicated daughter of the Gods. I'm a singer with an angelic soprano voice and I have a band; my last band, Belladonna Bouquet, had a CD out on an indie label. I play the mountain dulcimer and the valiha (sort of), and I'm learning how to play the bowed psaltery. My feet are firmly on the earth, my head in the clouds and my heart wide-open with compassion.
I'm pretty good-looking too, for all it matters. I have grace under fire. I'm quiet.
As to whether others appreciate my specialness.... some do, but I'm not sure that it matters. We're conditioned to be critical, heartless and brutal, both to others and ourselves; it's the grease that keeps the corporate, consumerist world humming.
I'd like to take a moment to praise my parents for their specialness. Both have experienced great adversity in their lives, but managed to raise a family and keep a home. They're awesome gardeners and hard workers. My dad is an incredible woodworker who, during his lifetime, taught himself how to do knotwork, how to play musical instruments and even how to make them. My mom is a clearheaded businesswoman with a talent for cooking and making quilts. She also loves Victorian literature. They have always been open-minded and compassionate, helping those in need. Love ya, mom and dad!

My younger sister, Christina, is special in the fact that she is an extreme odd ball. If she were not an odd ball, then there would be no uniqueness to her already quirky personality. I don't say many nice or respectable things about my sister like I should, so this is for all the times I messed up and open my big mouth. This is to you Tina!

|nick (Somewhere, Minnesota US) ||Age: 20 - Email |
I'm special because of my abillity to question everything. I constantly question my beliefs and religion though I don't normallychange my mind about much. I mostly only reconfirm what's already in my head. It's good though to know that if there is something that I believe in that changes I know right away.
What really makes me special though is my abillity to help people by listening. Everyone always comes to me with there problems knowing that I'll always listen and never criticize. It isn't very often that I can give advice but I guess it must be a really big relief to unload your burden weather that person can give advice or not.
Some times I wish that some one would apreaciate my specialness. It can be a real pain in the bud for every one to unload themselves on me but none will returne the favore, but I guess thats how life is. I'm geting along either way so I guess its not that big a deal.
Though he will never read this but the most special person in my life is my Dad. He always pushes me to be the best that I can be. I never would have gotten as far as I am today if it wasn't for him. ""Thankyou Dad""
| I Am Special In Many Ways, As Are We All. In My... ||May 18th. at 2:55:37 am UTC|
|Ashur Fox (middle of nowhere) ||Age: 26 |
I am special in many ways, as are we all. In my family, which is very matrilineal, I am the last of the bloodline, the eldest daughter of the eldest daughter, (and so on and so forth). And as such, my first born daughter will also be special as she will carry on the family bloodline. Friends have told me that they value my ability to remain upbeat and positive when everything is going wrong (which is pretty standard in my life unfortunately) and that I can make the most disasterous road-trips, vacations or get-togethers still something memorable and fun. Some recently met acquaintences told a friend of mine that I am "really there". She in turn expressed her definition of their comment to be that I know who I am and what I want, that my opinions are my own and that I am not afraid or ashamed to stand up for myself or others. But most of all, I like who I am. It took me a long time and a lot of heartache to finally come to know myself better, to like who I am and to love myself for every aspect of my personality.
