Question of the Week: 28 - 2/12/2001 Where Did You Get Your Magickal Name? The tradition of taking on a magickal name is an old one in many Pagan paths. Once used to protect themselves and their covenmates or to create equality among members, magickal names are now often individually chosen to reflect or project certain traits, pantheonic allegiances or just because it sounds cool. How did YOU get your magickal name? What is the story behind it, the meaning of it and the reason that it was either given to you or you chose it? |

I found my name mainly through a combination of brainstorming, meditation, and probably some sheer randomness. I was trying to find something which says a lot about me without becoming too large, tongue-twisting, or blatantly absurd. Eventually I gave up on it for a while and decided to head off to the botanical gardens (at that point, just down the street) to dance my totem, just because it felt like a good time to do so. About halfway there, I started thinking about it again, and it suddenly hit me: Clearwater. And it just felt right. I said it to myself, and right then it rained for a few seconds, one of those brief summer showers that cools you off rather than soaking you to the bone. Needless to say, I took the hint. I've always felt a deep connection to water (despite being an Aires), especially when it's flowing quickly or in a mountain pool; both of which are often crystal clear. Personality-wise, I tend to go with the flow of things, am fairly slow to anger, and generally tent to aviod obstacles rather than plowing headlong into them. Plus I'm about the only one of my friends who will step back from a problem or arguement to get a clear picture of the various factors creating the compication. Interestingly enough, Clearwater is also the translation of my mother's maiden name, something which I didn't know until she told me recently. |

My magical name just sort of came to me. While I was preparing for initiation in my coven, I was told that I needed to pick one and that the traditional way to do so in that coven was to use Buckland's numerology technique (I don't remember the formal name). I'd already been half-joking about what it would probably be but, when I "ran the numbers", it fit perfectly. So I adopted it without further thought.The odd thing about the name is that, counting me, there are 7 people on the planet who know what my magical name is. I never use it for anything public, and rarely even use it in a circle or other ritual work. It certainly doesn't show up as a screen name. To me, it is an intensely personal name, one that I chose because it described who and what I am. In this case, I feel that the name truely is the thing; as a result, I don't trivialize it. |

Well, I chose my magickal name after a lot of consideration. My public magickal name is Dyana MoonRose. I chose this name for the Goddess Diana. I have always liked the name Diana, and it seemed to pull to me more so than the others I had to choose from. MoonRose obviously represents the Moon and a White Rose *which are my favorite*. I chose that name to inspire a closer connection with the Goddess. The name has worked well for me and I think it helped me begin my journey. I never really thought about magickal names becoming a screen name. It is something to think about. Most pagans who know me from the internet know me as both my public magickal name and my real name. Perhaps I am becoming one of the exceptions. Blessings Dyana |

I started the choice for my magical name by making it more difficult than it really needed to be. I started by listing different animals and nouns, then trying to put them together in forms that seemed to me to fit. But none ever did. By the time I gave up on that, I had a two page list of names I had rejected. One night, while standing in the outside it came to me, Ravenwind. I have always liked the Raven, it is a very symbolic bird. And I have felt a connection to the wind most of my life. I love to stand outside and listen to the voice of the wind. It is my way of communing with the Goddess. I can hear the music of her voice in the wind, the caress of her touch in the breeze upon my skin. The shout of her anger in the storm. The wind is like her, strong and gentle, neither bad nor good. It just is. I believe that that night, she whispered my name to me on the breeze. |

My magickal name came from my heritage, who I am. My ancestors are originally from the Isle of Skye, my element is Air and my totem is the wise mother magpie. So I adopted the name Skye and when I am around pagan folk it is what I am called by. However when I am in circle I use my Celtic magickal name which is Kyna Aaid - It means wise Magpie, which is along the same lines. I also have a private name, sent to me one magickal Esbat night in a grove in the forest. I didn't know what it meant initially and after some reseach found it's meaning which ironically is not far off from my other two:) My mate Earthwolf of thirteen years this February 23rd, and I are finally getting handfasted this July 5 on the Full Blessing Moon and will be legally incorporating our magickal names to blend with our "mundane". *Grin* Brightest Blessings! LOL have you seen the random pagan name generator? More seriously, I find that while I have a magickal name very few people know it. Being a public figure has it's drawbacks, among them being that nearly everyone knows "The Trish Telesco" (why folks put "the" on there I will never know)... but few people have a clue who LoreSinger is :-) Lore came about quite simply. I have always loved folk music, and I am a folk magician. When I write about folk magick, to me it's a kind of music -- a lot of it's very lyrical (you notice me sneaking poetry in whereever possible). So LoreSinger seemed apt. Nope, no flash of light or visions -- but it has always "fit" (and better still since lore continues to grow with the times, so does the name!) Gentle Winds and Sweet Water be yours. |

I came upon my magickal name through a lengthy process. I took my birth date and using numerology came up with a magickal number 5. I then began thinking of names that suited me and tried to match them with the same number. But that only gave me half my name. The other half came from the names of my two animal spirit guides the black and brown bears called moon and star rspectively. And that's How I got my name. |

Okay, go ahead and laugh... My magickal name came to me from a combination of the Internet and a dream. How cheesy, I know. My name is Torin Rainwolf. Torin I found while surfing the net and it was in one of those "Pagan Name Meaning" lists. It's got a double meaning- The page listed it as Latin meaning Tender, as well as Celtic for Chief. Both are appropriate to me.. I'm a soft-hearted guy, whose lineage, if the family stories are true, stretches back to the Celts when they lived in England, before being pushed to Ireland by the Anglo-Saxon invaders. When I saw it twice, Torin just seemed to jump out at me. Rainwolf came about in a dream. I awoke one night in the midst of a storm from a dream I can scarcely remember now, in which I was guarded by a wolf. When I awoke and got my senses back, Rainwolf was on my lips. My magickal name is, I feel, temporary, until something more appropriate to me is revealed at a later time, though that does not diminish it's importance. |

My magical name is Anaria. I chose this name before I knew about Paganism. My cat is Anaria, I named her when I was 14. I was reading an appendix in The Lord of the Rings, and one of the first kings of middle-earth was Anarion. There are only two or three lines about him but the name struck me immediately. I have done the numerolgy on Anaria and it fits perfectly. All of my closest friends know this name is mine. But, I also use this as a screen name. My husband is very wary of the people behind the message boards, and prefers that I use that instead of my legal name. I really feel that this is my true name. |

ShadowDancer is more realted to what I am rather than who, thus I usually say the ShadowDancer. Originally I thought it would be cool to have a magical name, and asked for one while Journeying (shaman style) in an the upper world. I was given the name by one of my power animals. And, once I received it, I didn't really like it. But I asked and received, and so am stuck with it. I am told that Dances with Shadows is equally correct. I am also told that this is the style of name that Dragons use in non-ordinary reality. I still think it is kind of lame. |

Merry Meet! My name is Breeze. This name does come from my soul. It provides autonomity but it is so much more than that. When I found my path in this life, this path, I felt the need for a 'magical name'. It made sense to be safe while conversing with people out here on the net. I was anxious about the whole concept. I asked the Goddess to give me a name because nothing I chose 'felt' right. I had a dream that night. In the dream it was Ostara and I had cast circle in celebration of the holiday. I was calling to the elements of the east and air. I 'heard' the Lady's words that my name would come on the wind. I new my name would come to me soon. Ostara was only days away. As I was calling to the elements during my celebration of Ostara, I heard the word 'breeze'. It did come with the winds as I called them to the circle. I have only begun to realize what this name means to me. I perceive the wind (sometimes) as a harbringer of change and I have certainly changed. I have become more tolerant of others and their beliefs, and yet I have learned that I can be true to myself and my beliefs as well. My perceptions of life, of this world, and of how I fit into it have changed. I've realized that there is a purpose for me. I have duties, responsibilities, and lessons. I have talents and gifts to offer in return. There are other reasons that this name is becoming so important to me, but one of the most comforting and profound became evident in an experience I had recently. There was a storm that day. It was foggy, yet the sun would duck in and out of heavy cloud cover. The moisture that was coming down that day was shifting from a light, misty rain to heavy snow. The winds picked up then died down only to rise again. I should have been worried about the road conditions which were quickly become emergency travel only. I had to be out to take care of business and was thrity miles from home. I was despairing over some things that were changing in my life. Then something within me shifted. I became part of the storm. Shifting and changing. I felt and perceived the balance. I felt the power of the universe, and of the energy. Unafraid and finally able to understand that I need not struggle for control, that I only needed to become one with these changes. The way the wind is part of the storm. The way the energy is a part of me. The way I am a part of the universe. I believe I was given this name for a reason. I believe that it's an association that I need at this point in my life in order to better understand the changes that need to take place. This association does help me move with these changes. It helps me to both strong and gentle, and it helps me to undrerstand the magic that is within me. Brightest blessings, Breeze |

It sure took long enough, but after about a year of deliberation and intense thought after being self-initiated, I finally chose my magickal name. I decided to incorporate both my totem animal, my favorite color, and the element that always called out to me. As a project for an independent art course in high school, I created myself a silver ring that resembles a fang (much like a wolf's). This is really what brought the whole name together, and the name was forged at much the same time as the ring, thus the ring has even more spiritual significance to me than just my goddess ring. Combining wolves, fire, and silver, my ring and my name were created. |
