Question of the Week: 64 - 10/29/2001 What Are YOUR book/video/dvd Recommendations? What books do you like? Which ones do you read over and over again? What ones do you recommend for those 'taking a mental break' moments or for holiday gift giving? Do you have some suggestions for videos/dvds that deserve a viewing? Your suggestions need not be Pagan specific. In fact, we encourage you here to offer tips on good selections that may be found in the often-overlooked area of mythology, history, humor, sociology, sci-fi or art sections of the bookstores or video sections. |

myself, i find i am enamored with the harry potter books. true, they may be for children, but they are wonderful nonetheless. i also enjoy the movei practical magick. semi-factful, and extermely funny, i love this movie. |

Oh, I do love a good book! I could list dozens and dozens I love. However, I will do my best to keep this short. Honest. Non-Pagan, I absolutly adore Terry Pratchett. ANY Discworld book is worth a read, believe me. A fantasy novel I read several times over the years (until I lost my copy in a fire. ::sigh:: Can't find it again, darn it!) is The Darkangel by Meredith Ann Pierce. It is about a vampyre that drinks souls, not blood, and the girl that sets out to save her friend from it. It is classed as juvenial fiction, but I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. If only I could find it again... |

Books: Anything in the "Marcus Didius Falco" series by Lindsey Davis. Falco is a private detective in ancient Rome. Other favorites are anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, Laurell K. Hamilton, or Louise Cooper. I also enjoy some of the media tie-in novels for Farscape, Star Wars, and ST:DS9 Videos/DVDs: "Practcal Magic" is a must-see for any witch, even though I've never personally danced around drinking margaritas to "Lime in the Coconut". I really enjoyed "Gladiator", because the hero's Pagan beliefs were central to his survival. "Princess Mononoke" was a wonderful movie. Also check out "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer. Also, any DVDs of Buffy, Farscape, or Stargate! |

The books "Hell House", and "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson are excellent, also anything by H.P. Lovecraft and good for a scare, as well as "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett is sure to keep you laughing. And "Hell House" based off of Matheson's book is excellent and has just been released on DVD. |

As a librarian, I am exposed to many different kinds of books. Having seen and read so many of them, I always return to my favorite author when I want to read a great Science Fiction or Fantasy novel. That author is Anne McCaffrey. Ms. McCaffrey has written many titles over the last 40 years, and most of them are Science Fiction or Fantasy (she has written a few romances which are also great reading). I have enjoyed every single word she has ever written. I consider her one of the most talented writers I have ever encountered. Though she is in her 70s now, she still continues to write prolifically. Someday I hope to be able to get over to Ireland to meet her. I have an open invitation to come over for tea, as do all of her fans. I highly recommend reading Anne McCaffrey's works of fiction. In my opinion, they are the best! Happy reading! |

Well, I love reading and, although I«m a witch, my readings are not all "pagan stuff". My favourite book is "The name of the Rose" - Umberto Eco. It«s a perfect book: full of beauty, exciting and the story is very, very good. The film is not so good as the book. I recommend. |

I reckon the dvd "THE CRAFT" cause not only is a brill slightly scary movie it also teaches us not to take advantage of our craft and not to miss use it!!! It is also a great movie to watch and it has loads of extra's and special effects !!!! |

Books I love: "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, a novel about a southern black woman trying to find her place in the world amidst racism, sexism and a couple of controlling husbands. Often overlooked, but a great feminist novel and well worth reading! "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places" by Le Ly Hayslip. This one is autobiographical. Le Ly grew up in a small village in Vietnam during the war with America. She endured most of the hardships that come with war, and yet comes through it all with nothing but love and understanding. She's a strong woman and her book is incredibly moving. "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt is a true story about a murder (and the subsequent trial) in Savannah, Georgia (not really in the mystery genre, though). The characters are quirky, the story is a page-turner (and for those who need a little magick in their books, there's a rather amusing Voodoo priestess). For a good Witch story, Phyllis Curott's "Book of Shadows" is awesome. And "The Odyssey" by Homer is one that I read over and over again. It's got sex, swordplay, monsters, and ancient Gods-who could ask for anything more? Movies I love: "The Matrix"--awesome choreography, cool special effects, and one of those awesome, "how-do-we-know-we-really-exist?" plots. A little violent in parts, but otherwise awesome. "Chocolat"--a woman moves into a quiet French village and opens a chocolate shop, just in time for Lent! A great movie about having a little fun and finding what's really important in life, and about learning to love and learn from people who are different. Speaking of which: "Remember the Titans"--in 1960's Vriginia, the public high schools are desegregating. The movie follows a football team at one of these schools. The players learn to appreciate "the soul of a man, instead of the look of him", and find that they are ahead of their time, and their town, in that respect. A great Denzel Washington movie (is there any other kind?), and as a bonus it has an awesome soundtrack. This is my favorite movie, and it's one that everyone should see. |

I am absolutely enamored with the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. It's nine books deep and still not done, so be forewarned--if you start this series, eventually you will find yourself waiting for two years at a time for the next book. He's definitely inspired by the craft, in a convoluted sort of way--feminine powers are air and water and masculine powers are earth and fire. Anyway it's a wonderful, very involved series with good characters. |

Richard Adams (you may know his book "Watership Down") has always been one of my favorite authors. I once heard someone describe reading his books as "being woven into a tapestry", and it's such an apt description! He's a magickal storyteller, and my absolute favorite book of all time is his novel, "Maia". It's the story about a young, beautiful peasant girl who is sold by her mother into slavery, and ends up a concubine in the mythical, semi-barbaric kingdom of Bekla. The story traces her adventures over the course of a year, to a heart-pounding conclusion. To say that this book is an epic is a serious understatement! This book has everything....politics, war, excitement, romance, and all with an underlying current of paganism that's magickal to behold. I think the book may be out of print now, but I was able to find used copies over the internet, and I think my local library even has a copy. Find it and read it...you won't be sorry! |

An absolute must read by every witch/pagan out there is The Chalice & The Blade by Riane Eisler. To say it is enlightnening is a huge understatement. "The most important book since Darwin's Origin of Species." (Ashley Montagu) "Some books are like revelations, they open the spirit to unimaginable possibilities. The Chalice and the Blade is one of those magnificent key books that can transform us." For that matter everything this woman has written is worth reading multiple times. But this one must be in every witch's library & especially the elders. |
