Question of the Week: 84 - 11/10/2002

Between the Veils: What Did You See?

In the times of the thinning veils, did you look into the past or the future? What did you see?
What forms of divination do you use? Do you have an unusual technique that you would like to tell us about?
Have you had some (or all) of the things that you divined in the past come true? What is the most profound insight that you gained through divination? Do you think that the future is fixed or can it be changed?

I did nothing in particular on Samhain itself, but I did visit a cordial acquaintance for a second-opinion reading as well as some help with a couple of problems. Surprisingly, she was firghteningly accurate and everything she was speaking of is coming about. Not sure if it was a psychic kick in my pants or just writing on the proverbial wall, but I do feel much better.
Her main advice was that dealing with my past was the key to claiming the future as my own. she also suggesed that I do some "travel work"...meditiaion into my past. Included in this was a cleansing ritual to banish all the ill thoughts and emotions I'd let build against myself. The combination of the reading, the ritual, and three nights of meditation, I've gotten past the mental blocks and rediscovered myself.
I even had my first pleasant Halloween in four years.

Although I am of Euro extraction, and think Hallowe'en is cool, Oct.31 holds no particular spiritual or occult significance for me. I am not a Wicca person, and am agnostic regarding Samhain, Beltain, etc. (Full moons and solstices are a different matter.) I am however very "in touch" with the spirit world through shaman practices. And divination is a significant part of that practice. Typically, I journey to the upper or lower worlds either with or to one of my helping spirits when I have a question. The "answer" is sometimes given directly, but often must be understood from the actions or visions provided by the spirits. Many times I am directed to the I_Ching. (As a teen, I was a frighteningly accurate Tarot diviner, but I now mainly read hexagrams). The week of Hallowe'en I journeyed 3 times that were significant to me. 1. I checked on a spirit of a recently deceased person--to see if it needed help to cross over, out of this middle world. (It had already left, and did not need to be psychopomped.) 2. A friend had a lot of owls around her life, so I divined a message from Owl and delivered it. 3. I journeyed and read the I_Ching for a friend having difficulties with her fiancee. Time will tell on that one. As a shamanic practitioner I "cross the veils" all the time. I have noticed that my "spirit vision" is a bit sharper under certain moons. I sometimes use a quartz crystal, charged by the sun at the solstice to also enhance my vision(s).

This Samhain, I had an interesting experience that I don't know how to describe. I was sitting on the floor watching my best friend get ready for a party at a local club. I live in a small college town that has always had gang activity just below the police's radar. My friend was dressed completely in blue from head to toe. When I asked her why she felt the need to dress like that she said that it wasn't too important because a lot of the gang members around here wear blue. We both stopped talking at the same time. She was doing her hair while I was reading a magazine when the lyrics to the cd we were listening to said, "Don't wear your colors here, that's cemetary gear". I felt my stomach drop into my feet and Erin gasped out loud. I usually have my strongest intuitive feelings around Samhain and I take everything seriously. Erin turnded to me and told me that she had had a vision of her getting shot by someone in red that night. She still wanted to go out though so I blocked the door until she changed her mind. Two nights later, a friend of ours came over and said that he was happy that we hadn't gone to the club because almost everyone in there was wearing some form of red. When I heard that, I went to the bathroom to throw up but all I could do was wonder where that feeling had come from.

| Death And Samhain/ The Veil Lifts, The Closet Opens... | Nov 17th. at 3:47:16 pm EST |

I got the call Monday morning before Samhain that my Grandfather had died. It was completely unexpected and left his 7 children, countless grandchildren and wife feeling lost and helpless. His funeral was on Samhain, and I woke up sick, throwing up several times on the way to the funeral.
When I got home I rewrote my Samhain ritual to include a special communion with my Grandfather. That night I shared a lot with him that I hadn't had the chance to do while he was alive. I even smiled at the fact that he must be surprised, having just died and me showing up to come out of the broom closet to him!
That night I felt his spirit with me, intense and powerful, and despite my fears that he would not accept certain aspects of my personality, his love was very real, very reassuring.
