Question of the Week: 98 - 2/10/2003

Would You Live In A Haunted House?

You have found the perfect house. But it’s haunted. Doors open and close. Lights flip on and off. Footsteps are heard in the hallway, furniture is rearranged and ghostly figures are spotted wandering the grounds.
Would you move in?
Would you be comfortable living with ghosts and/or paranormal activities? Or would you send the spirits an eviction notice?
What are your thoughts on paranormal manifestations?

Without hesitation.
I have moved around so much and then in three different countries. My fondest memories seem to remain with the very first ranch my folks bought here in Canada when I was just a litle girl. I experienced many things there. Often telling my mother that someone was watching us from the attic window whenever we were outside. Of course she'd scoff at me. My stepfather was real dead set against all that. Then my Nanny from Australia came to visit, she too saw things. She slept in my room (which was in one end of the attic) when one night the bedroom window latch opened, then the window opened and a huge gust of wind blew my doll that had been sitting on my dresser infront of the window, across the room to her. She didn't feel welcome there.
I experienced 2 different spirits there. One was kind, a male and the other, a lady was not. Usually sometime after midnight, the room would get cold and the lady would appear. For the first year or so, her visits frightened me. I had a friend over on a sleep over one time. I had told her many things about the place. She was going to experience it for herself this night. Mom was away in Australia on a visit and my stepfather was off at work and wouldn't be home util after 3am. We both were in my bed and couldn't sleep. Then the footsteps came up the stairs, as they normally did every night. Mind you, there were no rooms in the attic prior to us and no stairs up to them either. The sound was like one foot, then foot and cane. One foot, foot and cane. And it was coming up the stairs. We were so frightened. (My room was halfway across the attic opposite the stairs) We threw on the bedroom light then closed my door. But having the door closed seemed even more frightening, so we decided to leave it partly open. I remember putting a string of yarn across the door to the bed, sort of like a tripwire, hanging cloths on it. LOL. Anyhow, we laid there in bed now waiting. Nothing really scary usually accompanied the footsteps but this night was going to be different. The footsteps continued once we lay quiet again. And they were reaching the top of the stairway now. Then we near died with fright when they continued across the first half of the attic towards my bedroom door. We were both watching the small opening of the door. Waiting for whoever it was. Then the light switch was turned off. We screamed! Then all was okay because we could hear my stepfather's truck coming in the driveway. My friend never spoke to me after that.
I never knew the history of that place at first. I would receive these visits from the lady, who seemed to thrive on keeping me up, then the other visitor, the man would come and the room would warm up and she'd be gone. He often sat on my bed and I could feel him next to my legs. I would feel comforted by his visits. I wanted to know what happened and who he was. So I slipped into a sort of trance. I heard a woman yelling downstairs. She was saying that she poisoned his food with arsenic. Then spoke his name, Billy Wedge. I looked into it and out found that this ranch used to belong to a man named Billy Wedge in the 1800's. The ranch was a stopover for horses, as this stretch of the Telkwa Hi-road was the main thoroughfare. This particular house was a barn. Now he had tried to build a nice house not far from it, but someone burned it down on him. So he built about a couple of miles away. It was in that house that he had a live in nurse. One day a neighbor was driving by when they happened to notice Billy's truck door was open with no one around. A load of grain was still in the back of the pickup. So they went in to investigate and found Billy dead. An investigation later revealed that he had been poisoned with the use of arsenic and that nurse was charged. Whatever happened to her, I don't know but she chose to remain at the ranch after her physical death. Now where he died, we couldn't get our horses to pass by for many years. It was famous in the area for being haunted then it burned down one night due to an electrical problem.
Anyhow, as my stepfather began building corrals he was told by a neighbor that Billy had built the same in the past. Same type and same location. Once in a while, the tractor would go on its own while in the field. My stepfather would jokingly say it was Billy but that was about it for him. My faorite thing as a kid was to explore. And I loved to dig up old rock piles to see what I could find. My sisters and neighbor's sons were always with me. I would say things like "What if we would find..." and sure enough, we'd find what I had just said every time. I really spooked them out. My mother felt nervous about the rockpiles and told me to leave them alone. But I would still dig through them whenever I possible could. The urge was just too strong. I was looking for something. I came across an old pocket watch and a few other neat things but that was not what I was looking for and for the life of me, I don't really know what it was.
The nightly visits kept happening. Often times, I would wake up after midnight, then pull out my guitar from under my bed and write a song instantly. Where this came from I don't know.
Now, not all memories about this place I am fond of. There are many pains. Most of which are of my pets. Every single last one of them died. Just mine. My cats, my rabbit, my dog and my horse. I couldn't understand it.
I eventually told the nurse that she was no longer welcome. That she no longer frightened me and she was to leave. She did. But Billy was welcome, as this was his home too. He did remain.
This was just a small bit of what happened there and I have had many since everywhere I had lived. It just took a while for me to accept it and move on. I've learned way more since that age. The ranch was my first experience of not only being able to see, but also hear and feel. I would never change a single moment.

Depends, is the house nice? Are the spirits hot? Do I have to live within the vicinity of a pet cemetery? Will there be any portals to the Underworld opened whilst I sleep? Can I get possessed by a kick-@$$ spirit?? Can I exorcise regularly?? Is the electric bill high? Do ghosts mind loud music and a rambunctious party life?? There aren't any chicks with Crucifixes, are there? Will I be able to projectile vomit for my friends?? Can the ghosts do guest appearances at my parties? And last....will there be BEER??????
*note, this is not actually how I feel, I am just on one of those stupidity kicks-I will regret this later*

I live in a Greek Revival that is 160+ years old. I have had 3 people here that have told me various "things" about what spirits dwell here. Two say there is something evil here but I refuse to believe them. I think it was all an act on their part to get me out of their coven that I was in the process of joining (amatures) . The third person told me a whole different story. Hers recalled past owners of the house which I have yet to verify. I have several pictures taken outside and inside the house in which orbs and ectoplasms are present so I know there are spirits here. One of the photos even has the shape of a man from the head to the hips, and a face of sorts in it. What ever their purpose for being here, they don't seem to bother us much. They know we are here to stay and that they must accept that fact. They don't cause us any trouble that I know of. Once in a while I think my cats see something that I cannot, but other than that you wouldn't even know they are here.

| Do We Not All Live In Our Own Versions Of Haunted Houses? | Feb 11th. at 3:00:06 pm EST |

Would I like to live in a house the is haunted? Yes. Just as long as it is not the Amityville Horror House or such.
I believe that every house and apartment that I have lived in, has had its own share of spirits walking around.
When I am sitting around in my present house, I see things moving out of the corner of my eye. Of course when I look, there is nothing there. But I do feel that there is someone in the house. I have always felt it. At first it was not a good feeling. But as time went on, I guess we got used to each other.
I have talked to the spirits in the house from time to time. Must be cause I am getting old, I guess. Trying to let them know that I know that they exist. Trying to make them feel that I am not a threat to their home.
Some day I will do a meditation and see if I can coax one out. Perhaps the spirit is just nervous that a new family moved in. Perhaps the spirit needs to be put at ease.
And then perhaps, the spirits that walk with me, have made friends with it. For I walk not alone.
Brightest of Blessings...

I would love to live in a haunted house, as along as the spirit (s) weren't malicious. I do live in a house in which I believe spirits pass through, but don't stay. On occasion I've taken pictures during parties, family gatherings, holidays, and an orb or two appears in the photograph. I was once told by an experienced ghosthunter that spirits are attracted to positive energy and those events usually provide that type of energy. Most recently we had three uninvited guests attending my child's birthday party. I never knew they were there until we got the pictures back, but there they were floating over our young guests. Other times, I've taken pictures of the interior of the house and there is nothing unusual. It seems that they are always non-intrusive, I never know they were there until after I get pictures back and they show up in some of the photos. In a way, I'm not really suprised to see orbs now and then, the land our home is built on was once farm and ranch land, as well as, being home to Native Americans for centuries. More recently and sadly, we had a murder take place in the house directly behind us.

| I Have Lived In A Haunted House. | Feb 11th. at 4:06:29 pm EST |

I grew up in a haunted house. Our spirit loved to move things, turn the TV on and off, walk around upstairs. After these things started to occur, our landlord informed us that her uncle had died in the house years before. Our spirit, "Henry" as we called him, never done anything to harm us. He was a playful spirit and it was fun living with him. Years after we moved out, they tore the house down and replaced it with a courthouse annex. I've often wondered if "Henry" is playing his tricks in the courthouse now.

We just moved into a haunted house this weekend. We didn't realize it was haunted until after we signed the contract & later went back with a digital camera to document the condition of the house for future reference when we moved out. The camera caught an energetic vortex in the kitchen & several entities in the family room. I immediately spoke out loud when downloading the photos. Spirit responded with answers to my questions about what was that "Vortex" was the response to the kitchen anomoly. When I saw the photo with the entities my exclamation was "What is this?" The response was "FRIENDS". I asked, "What friends?" got "Quakers" as a response. I immediately began looking up Quakers in Maryland. Sure enough, there was a large population of them in the area of the house. I think our site was a property donated for the meeting house. My husband heard a man talking to three women the night we were moving in.

and as long as we could co-exist in peace, I would let them stay.
My only true "ghost" experience was at the Winchester Mystery House in California in the '70's when I was about 10. I followed a nice old woman beckoning me into a room and chatted with her for a few minutes, separating from the tour group. When the tour-guide opened the door and asked what I was doing in there I turned around to show her the nice old woman who was speaking with me and she was gone. I remember the looks from my mom and the other tourists as I rejoined the group. It was Mrs. Winchester. Confirmed by pictures of her. She looked real enough to me. Not vaporie/translucent. I remember that she was pleasant but then in a hurry to go. I had impressions on the Queen Mary when we stayed there, but Mrs. Winchester is the only one I've seen fully.
I have heard from people that the condo in Mission Viejo, where my mom and I lived (and she passed in) had had some activity for a couple years after she passed. A girlfriend of mine told me that once (a couple of months after her passing) when she and a few other kids snuck into the condo to hang out away from prying eyes, my mom came in and told them to leave, freaking them all out. I had also heard from the woman that bought the condo (when I came to see who bought it) that she had felt a female presence and felt much better when I told her about my mom and that she was friendly. She has since passed on because I have felt her here. Most strongly after my daughter was born. But I'm sure she's somewhere with my ancestors having drinks and playing cards!! Regarding manifestations I think it depends on how they died and if they feel they still have work to do. In my mother's case, she died in her sleep. I guess she hung out there til she realized there was a better place to be.

| Would I Live In A Haunted House? Why Yes, Of Course! | Feb 11th. at 5:45:40 pm EST |

Would I live in a haunted house? Why yes, of course I would! The main reason is because I think it'd be interesting, and then I could go all out with the decorations! Red and black velvet curtains, long, winding stone staircases. Ah. It would be so much fun. Then I could buy my dream car, a hearse, and I'd be set!

| Yes ..... With Reservation | Feb 11th. at 6:18:37 pm EST |

I would move in, if it were just myself to worry about. I would not, however, move my children into a haunted house intentionally.
I moved into my current residence last May, knowing that the previous owner had died of lung cancer. She was young (my age) and a none smoker. I was worried about having an angry spirit to contend with.
We have many spirits in this house, that I see in the corner of my eye, and even my hubby sees them (which is saying something!) . I did a ritual cleanse of the house to banish negative energy (specifically - so that the positive energy could stay) and it has lightened the feeling of the house considerably.
There are still energy beings here, but the house feels light and happy, so I figure my cleanse worked.
Cleansed my house once, and would do it again if needed. The question really is, are you comfortable in your home? If not, then you need to do something about it.
Hugs Cheryl
