Question of the Week: 59 - 9/11/2001 911 America: Talking Through The Terror... Talking Through The Terror... And helping each other cope with the tragedies that struck at the very heart of the United States. The Witches Voice has opened up this forum in order that Pagans may express their thoughts on the terrorist attacks that took place in NYC and DC on September 11th. As the full realization of what happened and the toll numbers begin to come in, Americans have many challenges ahead. What are your thoughts on these incidents? How are you feeling? Feel free to post any magickal workings or other support gatherings planned in your area. Since the subject of Fallwell and Robertson has come up, let me just say my peace. These men have no clue. They don't know what it means to be American, they don't know what it means to be Christian, and they have no idea what it means to be pious. They want someone to blame so let them blame. Only the extreme right pays them any attention and that is because they say the same things they believe. I personally find them comical at the way they embarrass themselves. But today they went too far. They were saying in essence exactly what Usama Ben Laden is saying. The United States is a corrupt society. We are the devil. We must be destroyed for the sake of the world. And I will say this right now, THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO THEIR OPINION NO MATTER HOW MUCH I DISAGREE! What happened to the United States is a tragedy. What they want to see as their ideals uplifted in times of crisis, fine. Let them believe whatever they want. They have that right in this country. They hurt none with words. We need to stay focused on finding who acted on their fanatical beliefs and see justice served. I am as angry as anyone in the United States but I will not let a coward rob me of my ideals of Love, Life, and Light. Nobody will destroy my faith in the American People and the faith I have in my Lord and Lady. Not Ben Laden, not Fallwell, nobody. America will survive. We will be strong and be triumphant over terrorism. I again prey for the lost souls taken long before their time. Let us focus on them and their memory and see Justice served. I just wanted to let everyone know about a nationwide candlelight vigil I have heard about. I got three copies of the following in my e-mail today and shortly afterwards I heard a senator talking about how his wife had told him about this as well, and that he might be on the floor at 7 tomorrow night, but they certainly planned to do this if not something similar Please tell everyone you know about the following so that we may all send our energy and prayers to those who are in need of them: Friday Night at 7:00 p.m.(est) step out your door, stop your car, or step out of your establishment and light a candle. We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism. Please pass this to everyone on your e-mail list. We need to reach everyone across the United States quickly. The message: WE STAND UNITED - WE WILL NOT TOLERATE TERRORISM! Thank you. We need press to cover this - we need the world to see. |

I am many things...a daughter, a friend, a sister, a woman, a human, a wiccan, an American and...I am mad. I am mad that there are people in the world who hate me simply because of who I am and where I live. I am mad that an unknown (as of yet) number of those people hijacked planes carrying men, women and children and killed them along with others who simply went to work that day. Innocent, beautiful, loving people who all had families and loved ones who will miss and mourn for them for perhaps the rest of their lives. I am mad that someone came into my country and killed my countrymen for no reason at all simply because of where we are. I am absolutely livid that Jerry Falwell, a pathetic excuse of a Christian if ever there was one had the absolute gall to blame Pagans, gays, lesbians, and pro choice advocates for the attacks on America. He is not a man of God. And finally I am proud...I am proud that I live in a country that will not stand for such hatred and terrorism. I am proud that in my country there are people of every race and every nationality and every religion who have stood up and said they will not stand idly by and let evil destroy what we have worked so hard for. I am proud to be an American.... Gods Bless America. |

I did not read all the post that were written but I have some thoghts to about what has happened to our great country recently. I am in the Armed Services of this country and have sworn to defend the constitution against all enemies foriegn and domestic and I am proud to be able to serve country in that way. I was in field training when I first heard of what had happened and as a result we were brought out of the field so that we would be able to prepare in case we were called into duty. It makes me sick that someone would have the nerve to make an attack on the United States in this way. There has not been a greater reason since Pearl Harbor for Americans to take up arms to defend and to show the groups/countries or whatever else there is that the U.S. will not tolerate open threats to the basic freedoms of the U.S. and mankind like the one that was made. I am prepared for the possibility that I may have to go to combat to defend the rights and liberties of my family, my friends, and fellow Americans. I will proudly serve my country to show that those things will not be tolerated. That is all I have to say. |

I notice Mr.Falwell opened his mouth again.So we are to blame for this?Not some extreme radical fundamentalist whacko's?Oh well enough energy on him.Too much has been wasted already. I am thankfull to those all over the world that send their condolences. LOVE is still alive, no terrorist or religious zealot's can change that. I've never been to New York, Washington DC or Pennsylvania. I still feel as though I have lost loved ones.In my community the lines are so long at the blood banks they are actually turning people away, telling them to come back next week. I'm sending my check to the Red Cross today. I don't have alot of money, but I believe the right thing has no price tag. I sent out a prayer tonight for healing the victims, the nation and the world, as well as protection for the rescue and recovery effort, the military and the nation. May the gods bless us all. |

yes.. it is a tragedy.. it is hard... BUT... and i don't mean to anyone here, because A) i haven't read anyone elses posts yet and B) i would think that gennerally we all adhere to the "Law of Three"... (Continuing) I'm ashamed to be an american right now.. i live right in front of a mosque.. (muslims) and the Crap they've recieved since this whole thing has gone off...Sure.. True.. The media is constantly saturating everyone with the same visuals for hours on end (i don't know if that's still going on or not because i don't have cable) the lastes i've read online is masses of hate mail and The spurring of war... yeah.. it's a loss.. but it's like the majority were a beehive and someone hit it... how can we forget that we were human.. and the ones were lost were human... and the humans who did it have not admited to what happened yet... Even the mighty human race is only mortal. For all of my life I have seen the twin towers of the World Trade Center as a testament to man's ability to create. Now I have seen them fall, taking so many lives, as a testament to man's ability to destroy. The idea that Fate is fickle, that Fate is capricious, is nothing new. Certainly no one touched by this tragedy and by the incomprehensible order of events would doubt this. The people, the government, the world--none of us possessed the power to stop this tragedy, no matter how much we long to have been able to do so. But where do we go from here? The United States as a nation has never been one to sit still for very long. Through our collective daze and disbelief, time is still passing and still moving forward. Though the day be far from now, there will come a day when America will have fully recovered. We all will bear scars into the future, but the future also holds the promise of a time when we will have conquered this adversity. The future is our hope, and it is to that distant beacon of the future we must look in order to come through this ordeal with the courage that suits us as Americans. To those who have lost people dear to them through this act of cowardly malice, all of the sympathetic words in the language cannot convey the ache in my heart for you. I am thinking of those lost lights, and I reach out and encourage you, in whatever faith you may practice, to truly imagine that they too have moved on into their own futures, even if those futures do not include the rest of us. I would like to share a few verses of my favorite poems, by American poetress Emily Dickinson. It warms my soul, and I hope it will warm yours. Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. Merry Meet I woke this morning feeling as if I had a Bad Dream. I made my coffee, checked my blood sugar and took my meds like every morning. I felt numb can't quite explain it. I then turned on my TV which is something I never do in the morning, preferring to go to my computer and work while enjoying morning coffee. This tragedy was ALL over TV, every station still reporting Death, Injury, Horror! I can't escape it. I chant: "Crone of Transformation Morrigan, Ending Springs Creation, Morrigan". Where will this lead especially given the mentality of our current Administration? I wonder? The Sun is rising on a new day as it does everyday, that beautiful mauve color coming up over the Atlantic but life IS different this day. And I wonder? I have learned this morning that those I knew who could have been in harms way are safe. Yet this day IS different, I am less settled, more vulnerable, not to Nature Herself, that I have always understood and accepted. But instead by my fellow Human Brothers & Sisters...why? Religion??? Seems ridiculous to this Crone of Magick. And I wonder? My 24 year old son speaks of his willingness to go to War to KILL! And I wonder? I did not raise him to Kill, I did not raise him to follow the War Drums. Yet he is willing! And I wonder? I look at my grandchildren, what kind of world do I leave them that their Father, a child raised in a Goddess Worshipping Home should raise his Fists, beat his chest and call for Blood? And I wonder? I saw a death list this morning of my neighbors here in Massachusetts who are known dead from being victims on the planes that were hijacked...I want to turn my head, to close my ears, my eyes, my heart, I do NOT want to hear, yet I listen with sorrow. And I wonder? "Foolish Crone" I say to myself, "You are an Elder of The Old Religion, you know Death is a natural step in the Dance called Life." But THIS kind of death? No! Except this is the Cutting Season a time of sacrifice??? Only this, this was not Sacred, this was NOT part of the Natural Order of things where one life feeds off another to sustain itself as I do with the Corn of my Garden, the eggplant, the tomatoes. And I wonder? I know now I have no answers, no ability to comprehend this destruction. I can only sit here in disbelief and wonder, will I ever have an answer? Will we get beyond this? What will life be like this day and all the days to follow? Will our freedoms be curtailed? Will we go to WAR causing yet more destruction? Is this the beginning of the end? Written 9-12-01 |

I haven't been able to bring myself to post here until now. I live in Staten Island, NYC (right across the harbor, a ferry ride into lower Manhattan). So many of our neighbors are missing and people that I grew up with and dated as a teen. My heart is torn apart and then in the next moment, healed and swelled with pride at the selfless acts taking place in my hometown. I live with a NYC Sanitation worker who has been at St. Vincent's Hospital (the main hospital handling injuries for rescue workers)as well as down at ground zero 15 hours a day every day since this unspeakable horror began. I cannot even repeat some of the stories and sights he's seen. And then there are our brothers and sisters and friends and loved ones putting their lives at GREAT risk, digging in the debris, sometimes with bare hands because their work gloves are worn out. Police, firefighters, EMT's, Iron Workers (many of these are in my own family), sanitation, civil engineers and just regular folks trying desperately to save someone.........anyone who may still be living in this hellish surreal landscape that once was an awe-inspiring site. Some of these people are not even from the NY tri-state area only.........they are from places as far as Los Angeles, having driven here as fast as they could. These people don't consider themselves heroes. They just want to help. Then there are the people like the 13 year old (yes, 13) who drove a truck to Jacob Javits convention Center (a staging area for the volunteer effort)with boxes of food and water for the effort! A taxi driver, dropping off cases of work gloves and flashlights. Huge truckloads from Timberland, Coke, Poland Spring, Champion, providing boots, socks (it is wet at ground zero and the workers' feet are soaked constantly), rain gear (it is now pouring buckets and we are having electric storms in NYC). People bringing their own clothing from their closets, some digging into their pockets and BUYING new items and just dropping them without a word at the Javits Center. Just some of many MANY stories of unselfishness and unity in the face of unspeakable tragedy. I personally am more proud than ever to be an American today. Proud of the resolve of our people to band together and put everything at risk to sift through this in any way possible, even if only to cheer those travelling down the West Side Highway, handing out water to those heading back into the abyss. Yes, some are acting horribly and without thought in their terror and fear. These ARE THE MINORITY. My heart and soul are with all of us with friends and family still missing and may the Lord and Lady wrap their comforting embrace around everyone suffering in many ways at this time. I am going to attempt to get up to Javits Center myself today to do what I can, even if only to answer a phone or make coffee. Please support this effort in any small way you can, be it candlelight inter-faith vigils, cash donations to your local Red Cross or other agency involved, so they can keep providing food, clothing and eveything else these rescue workers need. All those innocent lives...why? As pagans we, more than most others understand that death is a natural part of the circle, but this...this was not nature. Those people had their whole lives ahead of them. They were so young. Destroyed all for being an american. I saw news footage of the people of the middle east laughing and clapping and thanking allah. I cried, and...I hated them. Then I told myself "No, that is not fair. Those people all their lives have had it drummed into their head that WE are evil, and WE hate them" What will come of this I do not know. I am not afraid, there may be war, but death holds no terror for me. I, however, do not want more lives cut short out of mankinds ignorance and bloodlust. Amidst the death and destruction though I see a unity that is beautiful. I see people of all races standing together, all differences put away, I wish it could have been achieved without this. I woke up 9.11.01 at exactly 7am Pacific Standard, My radio at full blast (its very rarely on radio normally its on buzz) People were yelling and screaming over the radio about a plane hitting the WTC. I Jumped up and turned on the tv and watched as the 2nd one hit. My best friend lives in queens, you can see the WTC from her bedroom window. I freaked out and started running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I emailed I called... I went insane. She was fine, very shaken but fine. Well after watching the tv for 12 hours, forced to be listening to extremely thoughtless speeches by the president. I realized this, How can a nation be strong with a leader who only accepts those who's religion is his own? Everytime I see the american flag I become ashamed and the words "In God We Trust" Or "God Bless America" flash across my mind like a slap in the face. Its become the same old song and dance. Patriotism to your country and (god???) I had an argument with a woman today in a chatroom, saying that god will protect us all? I told her, "What do you think they were saying in palestine?" Its Pride? Isnt pride a sin? What makes america so great? Unity? I do not feel unified at the moment. Betrayed? I feel numb Blessed be, Please goddess watch over us. |
