Question of the Week: 1 - 8/7/2000 Who are you going to vote for and why? Which political platform or candidate are you leaning towards? Do you think that a level of political involvement is important to pagans? Are you registered to vote, will you vote and who -if you don't mind telling the world- are you planning to vote for (or against)? |

I lean most toward the Libertarian platform, and so I am registered as one. However, because I realize that the electoral process of our nation truly only works well with two (and only two) candidates, I am going to have to choose the lesser of two evils. On the left hand, we have the bleeding-heart post (describing both how intelligent and how animated he is. On the right we have the born-again sleaze. Unfortunately, McCain didn't survive the trail, so I'll have to go with the post; we can probably survive another four years of that type, and I hate to think of the alternative. I belive that a level of political involvement is important for all people, but oft' overlooked/persecuted/belittled minority groups need to be involved more than most. |

I am currently leaning towards a 3rd party candidate, as the Jackasses and the Elephants are pretty much the same. I am a registered voter and as such I feel I do not need to belong to a party but should always try to vote for the person I think is best. Should I become a mindless drone who votes strickly on one party ticket or the other --Hell NO! I am a mishmash of "conservative" and "liberal" ideas. If Jesse Ventura were to throw his hat in the ring at the last minute I would vote for him. We could have controversy of a different sort in the white house. Think of mid-east peace talks being held in a ring with the victor getting Jerusalem. I know that is a bit irreverant but I am going to vote my conscience and not follow the adds. G.W. Bush is a puppet for his father and Gore well we don't want him back in TN but I personally don't want to see him win the Presidency. Both talk real pretty but I have yet to hear anything of worth, just empty promises given by someone who is telling the voters what they want to hear. |

Personally, I find neither the Republican nor the Democratic candidates very palatable. I will, however, be casting my vote for the asses this fall for the sole reason that I cannot stand the thought of Dubya picking as many Supreme Court justices as he could during his tenure. |

I have always been a democrat. However I am leaning now toward the Green Party. I tend to go along with Thomas Jefferson in that religion is a personal affair and has no place in government or its actions. However I also follow Jefferson in that I am a hostile enemy against tyrannies of the mind. A form of prejucide designed to keep the rights inherent to all from a select group is indeed tyranny. It is therefore the imperative of every citizen to protest the loss of freedom by any citizen, but moreso upon those whose rights are cut short. While we are not actively burnt at the stake, many are not afforded the rights inherent in our condition simply because of their religion. In this I say we are compelled for political action. I will vote and I will vote Green Party. The mentality that we must vote for whichever party might win, as expressed by those who would say that they would like to vote Green Party but will end up voting Democrat because of the conception of losing a vote is not democracy in action... it is herd politics. |

yes i am registered to vote, and a sad thing it is. iam only 18, and my first vote, really didn't do anything at all. it really makes me not want to vote. but anyway, onto the topic, first, i wanted Jesse Ventura to win, cause he is hilarious, and believes firmly about freedom of religion. and he DOES NOT like organized religion, he went out on a limb and said that. and for this, i admired him. but since he dropped out, my other alternative was Bill Bradely. i really like him, he has soft eyes, and just gave me good vibes all around, but he lost hidiousely too. so, now, the question is: who to pick, BUSH-the racist bigot christian who believes christianity is the only religion, against abortion, against gun control, against gays. or GORE--for gun control, pro choice, for the death penalty, etc. well, to tell you the honest to Gods truth, i really have no idea. i don't like either one. i think Bush is running cause his dad did, and he figures he can get it. but i think Gore is running because he is trying to gain popularity in the office after being vice or something with clinton. so, WHO??? thank you for letting me voice my opinions, i would love to hear of anyone's thoughts. I will for the first time be voting as a third party. I no longer trust the big two parties to represent my interests, given our violent attacks on Kosovo and Iraq by both. I will be voting Socialist, for David McReynolds, whose views on most issues match mine. Some political involvement may be important, but not without money. We now live in an age where if you have enough money, you can buy any election. George Bush Jr. has already won. We might, however, be able to influence lower level local elections. That is where to concentrate our energies. |

I have been a Republican for all of my voting life. In fact, my family have been heavily involved in the Republican Party ever since I can remember. Am I voting Republican in the next general election? NO! I lean now towards the Green Party, which seems far more logical to my belief system. I realize that a vote for Nader may be taking a vote away from Gore, which looks to be the only answer to defeat the "i-don't-think-witchcraft-is-a-religion" candidate, however: I feel that it is my duty to vote for the best candidate...regardless of the outcome. I like what the Green Party stands for, at least in word. They are making an impact on our local environment in SW Florida. It is your right to vote. It is also your right to choose whether or not to vote. This is an important election. It may very well set the stage for true freedom of religion in the decades to come. As a witch and a slightly to the right voter, I definitely will not be voting for the Democrats or the Republicans, because they are fundamentally the same. Both wish to take our right to protect ourselfes away, undermind our industrial base by sending our jobs abroad and centralizing everything to DC, and redistibuting our individual wealth. We as pagans are unique and individuals. Socialism (The Socialist Party) seeks to have a collective reasoning or thought and is unnatural. They wouldent be the "kind" socialist party. I've been to countries where they had this sort of government...basically to babysit them; where there is mass pollution and destitution. The Republicans, whom I used to vote for in the past, have sold out to the left and abandoned US soverignty and protection of life. So, with that in mind, I'm voting for Hagelin. He stands for ridding ourselfs of GATT, WTO and NAFTA. He's for soverignty. He's for the 2nd amendment, he has alternative spirituality. I'm voting for him. |

I am a 25 Y/O registered voter. I believe that I would like to see a green party president. Its possible just not probable. I feel that as an american it is each and every ones task to take a stand and voice out for freedoms that we take for granted. For if we do not use theese freedoms we may loose them without ever noticing that they have slipped away As a chaos magician I am not beyond using magic to work for those that I favor and against those I dont. |

Hmmm...Gush or Bore? I just can't bring myself to vote for either of them. Neither's speeches ring of anything but contrivance and pandering...all flash and no substance. I'm a pretty firm believer in democracy, and when I cast my vote, I prefer it to be FOR someone, rather than AGAINST another. That being said, it's looking more and more like the Green Party and Ralph Nader for me. |

I will not be voting this election year, I am throwing my vote away in protest to the out right lying and political corruption that has overwhelmed the United States. This will be the first time since I have been able to vote that I will not vote. As a former United States Marine, very proud of my country, and about as patriotic as a person can be without being a zealot to the cause, I am ashamed of our countries politions. One is a known liar, the other someone who prom, otes religious intolerance over others. Niether are worth my time and effort to vote for. On the local level, I do what I can but I see no redeming hope for our national level politions. Yes, I do think political involvment is important to pagans, I also think it should be important enough to be involved as much as one can stomach it. Yes, I am registered to vote. Most likely I will end up voting. And probably against Gore. Not because I like Bush, but because I detest Gore and what he has shown the american people to be capable of, Bush's religious indignation towards other religions can be fought, legally and constitutionally. His Jesus day and other inappropriate religious ovatures are being battled. But you can not battle a liar and win, not when too many people are willing to back the liear, not to save their skins, not to save his skin, but to save party skin, Clinton is a prime example. Even his own party acknowledged his wrong doing, but they steadfastly refused to do anything about it. Thats like a cop saying yes he is wrong for breaking and entering, but we are not going to do anything about it. Amounts to the same thing. Gore is knee deep in Clintons mess and neck deep in his own. |

Recently I was able to spend time around serious Christians (meaning people who know their bibles and have deeply-held beliefs) and what I learned has affected my life: Christians seriously, sincerely believe that any non-Christian is not only doomed to their hell but under the influence of "satan." Not a shocker, right? Well, what this means is that NO amount of "goodwill" education about who we are as pagans and what we do as pagans will EVER get them to accept us and allow us to be ourselves. If they appear to "accept" us, it is only because they think they can convert us. They can't truly accept us, because they sincerely believe we are led by satan (us denying the existence of satan means nothing except to "prove" that the devil's got us duped). So if education and networking won't work against this country's Christian force, what will? Politics. The law is on our side; the constitution is on our side. We must fight very, very diligently to retain the right of freedom of religion. It is VITAL that EVERY pagan vote--Christians vote in their attempt to have their religion forced on everyone, and so must we vote to counteract them and insure that we are allowed to practice our religion. I know a Christian who says, in response to people who complain about any kind of Christianity in the public sphere, "The constitution guarantees freedom *OF* religion, not freedom *FROM* religion." He's right, but not in the way he thinks--the constitution guarantees freedom *OF* religion, not freedom *from- every-religion- except-Christianity*, which is what Christians seem to be after.
