Question of the Week: 11 - 10/16/2000 Hollywood Hype Hollywood Hype through movies such as "The Craft" and now the "Blair Witch" movies, and television shows such as "Charmed", "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer". "Freakylinks" and "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch," have all contributed to the rise of public interest in the Pagan paths and especially Witchcraft. If someone came to YOU after seeing "The Craft", "Charmed" or "Blair Witch," etc., what do YOU want them to know about real Witchcraft and Paganism? What would YOU-or do YOU- tell these folks? |

Although I have not seen all the shows mentioned (I have seen Practical Magic, Charmed, Buffy, and Sabrina) I don't think the tv shows/movies do any real harm. Yes I would like to see some shows/movies show a litle more truth, but generally they portrait it in a good light. As for becoming interested in Witchcraft after having seen the show or see the movie. I personally do not think it something to be looked down apon (that's how I originally became interested in Witchcraft). That's the only way some people hear about it, other than as a joke or threat. If someone REALLY wants to be a witch then they wil find out for themselves what it truly is, many still like watching that show or that movie again. I still watch Charmed. |

I think the one thing I would tell them is that if they are ever able to do any of the things in those shows (which I actually like - I think they're fun!) then do make sure they come back and show me because - well - I just can't figure out how to change my eye color or make all the traffic lights turn green for me....yet anyway Seriously though - - I think the most important thing that I would tell them is that the most important lesson that I've learned is that you must look inside yourself to find spirituality. Being a witch isn't about the spell of the week and making some ichy girl loose her hair or fighting demons from another dimension - - it's about learning to live in harmony with our universe and learning how to use the divine energy and the energy within ourselves to promote goodness. Spells, rituals must come from within you and once you are on the right path, doors will open that you didn't even know were there! I would tell them that watching all the movies and reading all the books in the world won't make you a witch for if you are a witch then those truths are already inside you and need not come from external sources...that they must re-learn what they already know. |
