Question of the Week: 80 - 10/6/2002

Polytheist, Monotheist, Dualist or Other?

Are you a die-hard Polytheist who believes that the many Gods/Goddesses are distinct and individual entities? Are you a Pagan Monotheist? Pantheist? Do you believe that “All Gods/Goddesses are One God/Goddess”? Does the term ‘Lord and Lady’ represent a specific Lord and/or Lady to you or is it a term used most often to simply denote the concept of a male and/or a female deity? Do you think that all of these terms are interchangeable? Can you see where and when the need to define what YOU mean by ‘Gods/Goddesses’ might be necessary? What do you think about ‘Choose one from column A and one from Column B’ pantheon building?

That's right... i'm a Deist. Not a monotheist, not a polytheist, not an agnostic or atheist... Paganism and the majority of 'deism are looked upon as you are *this* or you are *that*. personally i believe in pantheonism, lord and lady, AND all being part of the whole Deity... but I guess that's the eclectic in me coming to the front. There's nothing wrong in believing/thinking the same thing... some cultural god/desses will hold more sway, while the belief of male AND female will hold sway, while the ideology that we all form the same whole and therefore the dieties of choice should be part of that whole.... that's Deism.

Honestly? Having spent many years as a Jehovah's Witness, I can't comprehend more than ONE deity. I believe, however, that this one deity embodies all personifications, male, female, dark, light, etc. Just like we as humans (made in deity's image) embodiy many (if not all) of these qualities to an extent. ~BB!

I guess I'd have to say that I'm a dualist, since I believe in the balance of all things.. But I think that Deity is so big that we each have to separate it out into the sections that we can understand and be comfortable with. If you need to have a pantheon, then the way you make your choices is a function of your own experience and comfort with your vision. In many ways, I think that's what sets us apart from the "big three". We allow ourselves the CHOICE, and don't necessarily follow someone else's doctrine. There seem to be as many different paths as there are pagans to explore them!

It is really ashame that the Philosopher Benedict Spinoza, is considered a Christian Philosopher. His Theory concerning what the universe is made of is wonderful. In a nutshell: Monads are the stuff of which all things are made. God is all Monads. Therefore, all things are God. I degress away from his understand of intelligence and purpose, but not by much. I just expand from where stuff comes from and accept catagories of things into the concept of "Things" that are a bit unusal. Like Intelligence is a things, and consciousness is a thing. I will stop here, with this circular thought. We have what we have, like body and conscious, because God has these things and God has these things because we have them. Thus we are God. All is God. I don't know really where I lie in this aspect. I believe in one Divine, that has many aspects, and use the names of gods or goddesses that represent those aspects as I need or give thanks for. So I kind of feel that I am either all of the above or none of them. Can anyone help me out here?

I am a firm believer in a universal being a sort of primal force that everything is made of.
I believe that the lord and lady are expression of this energy and that deity with names exist is because people give them names to get closer to them.
