Question of the Week: 108 - 4/28/2003

Do You Speak Pagan Geek?

Are you techno-savvy? A Diva of the Database? A Sorcerer of Software? Well, not all Pagans are so adept and they could probably use some techno-tips!
If you know of any good Pagan (or non-Pagan) software, spam-fighters, anti-virus software programs, pop-up zappers or the like, please share your knowledge with us!
If you have questions relating to these issues and would like some guidance, feel free to post your questions here. Perhaps some Pagan web guru can provide an answer for you.
If you offer FREE Pagan related graphics, email postcards or other web tools and/or goodies, tell us where to find you. We all like treats!

A couple of very useful *free* products available to protect your computer...
A good virus scan is available online at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. Housecall will scan your computer for viruses, without having to download a large virus scanning software package, and will even delete them for you.
Spybot - Search & Destroy, http://security.kolla.de/, can detect and remove spyware like Trojans, adware, keyloggers and system monitors from your computer. It can also be configured to block most of these from being downloaded in the first place.

I am a computer science major so I get to play with some pretty cool software. As far as anti-virus the best that I found is eTrust antivirus, it is reasonable in price and pretty much takes care of itself. As far as pop up blockers there is one made by panicware, you can get a free version at panicware.com that works really well.
Blessed be!

While I am not into programing or any of that other stuff, I do love to surf the net for my Pagan searches. I love checking out websites and seeing what they have to offer. I have found some beautiful sites with literally tons of information. But I must say my main forte is my PDA. I am also a RN and carry my PDA with me always. At first the main things on my PDA were medical programs to assist me at work, but I have also found a few pagan programs that I have installed on there as well. I have a Moon Phase program for PDA, also another that interpets dreams. These can be found at www.visorvillage.com. Just type in the names:Dreams Connection or Moon Phase in the search bar and it will bring them up. I absolutely love them. Also on this question, Korbeau suggested a program for PDA called Pagan Resource, this is a wonderful program, that you add in your own info for stones, runes, recipes, sabbats, etc. It can be found at http://glitchware.gemini2000.org. I am sure that more Pagan minded programs for PDA's will keep popping up, the trick is to keep surfing the PDA sites to find them.
Blessed Be StormRavn

Being quite fluent in Geek, my recommendations would be as follows...
For home computer protection:
Norton AntiVirus (availale for purchase at your local office/computer supply store) , Ad-Aware by LavaSoft (available at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/) , NoAds (pop up killer available at http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds/)
When ever I build or restore a system for a client, I always install at a bare minimum the last two (they are both free and available for download from the links above)

My recommendations for Ad blockers: www.adsubtract.com. Has a free trial period, the software is reasonably priced at $29.95 for the full version. I tested the heck out of this, and it did well (blocked over 1000 ads in one day, and didn't crash and cry when I went to about.com!) Go to their Downloads page to get the trial version.
It will not only block ads, but unwanted animations, music, and has what they call Advanced Cookie Management - allows you to identify those little spyware buggers.
Trillian is highly recommended if you have too many IM/IRC/ICQ accounts to keep track of. Lots of cool skins available for it too. It's one-stop communication, and you can send files. Also supports secure chats.
Shameless plug for myself: I'm a database programmer with over 10 years experience in the field. I'm Heathen, very pan-pagan friendly and specialize in small business clients. Everything from inventory dbs for your pagan supply store, to web-shopping and site administration. My current technologies include Oracle, Access, MYSQL, FoxPro, etc. I am Unix/Linux/Win/Mac proficient. I do a little PHP/Postnuke stuff as well. If your store or organization needs a hand with upgrades or creation, drop me a line, free estimates.

All right, so I signed up with Earthlink for e-mail and internet, but they have proven worth their pagan-ish name sake. Earthlink now offers an awesome pop-up blocker. You have to have an account (which is worth it in my opinion, I've had them for years) , but if you do, you'll highly appreciate it.

For anyone interested.

| Spyware | May 3rd. at 11:17:16 am EDT |

| Lyra (below me) | Age: 32767 - Email |

A lot of people out there have virus protection and a firewall, but what about protection against spyware? Adaware is a program that checks your box for many kinds of spyware. Why do we want to get rid of spyware? So us techno pagans won't have to deal with the bother of little script kiddies getting root and messing with our digital books of shadows. Here is the url to download Adaware: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306
You could also go to Lavasoft's site to see what else they have to offer: http://www.lavasoft.de/
BTW: Adaware is free.
