Where Did You Get Your Magickal Name?

The tradition of taking on a magickal name is an old one in many Pagan paths. Once used to protect themselves and their covenmates or to create equality among members, magickal names are now often individually chosen to reflect or project certain traits, pantheonic allegiances or just because it sounds cool. How did YOU get your magickal name? What is the story behind it, the meaning of it and the reason that it was either given to you or you chose it?

I swiped mine! LOL! The Morrigu is my patroness, but just about every version of her name has become so common it's lost all meaning. Just try yelling *Morgan, Morgana or Morgan LeFey* and the next pagan gethering and watch how many heads turn! :) I came across mine in a Patricia Kennealy-Morrison book. It's the fictional name for The Morrigu in her books. It fits, is uncommon, and distinctive, like me! Many thanks to Ms. Kennealy-Morrison, not only for the name but for her wonderful books as well!

When My Name Came To Me, It Came At A Time When... Feb 26th. at 10:24:11 pm EST

Delphi Summer (Riverside, California US) Age: 26 - Email

When my name came to me, it came at a time when I was in spiritual turmoil, I was still a Christian (but in my heart of hearts, I was always a witch.) I had been in this horrible relationship. When I left my ex, my paradigm shifted. I reclaimed my spirituality.

I had this dream where I saw myself. I was coming down a walkway and my hair was much darker than it normally is - and short. I was wearing a white dress and had an amazing vibrant orange shawl with which I had wrapped around my shoulders, like a bird might with his wings. On my neck was a tattoo - Delphi. (Mind you, I am looking at a person who is me. This is the Jung shadow...) I had, in my dream, walked up to my room where three cobalt bowls were with candles in them.

When I woke up, I had felt much different. I am a Leo, so the 'Delphi' held a lot of meaning for me. Apollo rules Leo, and in turn was born in Delphi. Shortly thereafter, I had performed my second ritual.

'Summer'. Summer is my favorite season. It invokes in me the green and lush life of the earth. The middle ground between birth and death. It felt whole when adding it to my name. When adding all the letters in numerology, the number corresponds with my personal number. My destiny number.

I feel that Delphi was given to me by the Divine Goddess. There have been times in my life where I am shown many things in dreams, or in meditation. In much the same manner I was shown my totem animal.

My daughter's magical name is "Thundermoon". I gave her that name until she finds her own. She was born on a full moon with thunder lightning rain hail.

Cahl Stormforce (Homewood, Illinois US) Age: 15 - Email

I spent several weeks trying to determine what my name was. I could feel it there, but couldn't quite determine exactly what it was. Finally, I was lying in bed one night, and asked the Universe, "What is my name?" The answer came back immediatley: Cahl. (Long 'a, ' silent 'h.') I recognized the word, as though I'd heard it every day of my life. Unfortunatley, I still have absolutley no idea what it means. :-)

The other half of my name came to me a few months later. I was reading Elf Fantastic, edited by Martin H. Greenburg, and a character in one of the stories is named Kestrel Stormforce. She is a fierce environmentalist, and fights for the protection of the planet. I feel the same way, and she inspired me. So I adopted her name. Cahl Stormforce fits me very well.

Blessed Be!

My Magickal Name Came To Me As Most Inpirations Do. The Information... Feb 24th. at 3:54:38 pm EST

Chris (Cheilis) (Chatham-kent, Ontario CA) Age: 27

My magickal name came to me as most inpirations do. The information we all seek is out there its just a matter of interpretation. I was walking back a farm field when I was directed to collect a staff at a tree I was unfamiliar with. It was as if i was only partialy in control of my direction but the pull was strong. So finally i found the tree. A great hickory. One of its young was the desired cutting. So blessing and thanking the spirit of the tree i took it and fashioned it into the simple staff i was called to make. When i had finished i rested under the old hickory and meditated. Listening to the wind whip through the field. Hearing the sounds of the insects and birds around me. Then the flash of inspiration, like a big neon sign written in the air in my mind. And from then on i carry my magic name as much as i carry my own. I'll admit that I use it as a screen to protect myself and those i love. I have had to many bad run-ins hand hence as some of the druids of old i cloak myself in shadow to avoid confrontation.

Blessed be

I Chose My Magickal Name, Not To Project Necessarily, But To Invite... Feb 24th. at 10:38:58 am EST

RedWood RainEagle (Fort Wayne, , Indiana US) Age: 37 - Email

I chose my magickal name, not to project necessarily, but to invite to me the attributes of each portion of the name...My Magickal Name is Redwood RainEagle. The Redwoods of California have stood for thousands of years, thus stability and stamina, and strength are the attributes I wish to draw from with this name. Rain is a blessing and life giver from the Universe, It heals, quenches, and is a subdued, albeit reconable force. Eagle, well, I don't have to tell many of you what the Eagle stands for, but it's strength, majestic flight, soars above, and endures even to the brink of extinction. I came upon the culmanation of this name through many hours of meditation, and one particular dream that is so precious and intimate between myself and the Universe that I cannot speak of it here. Most of you will know me by RainEagle, but the quiet, hidden strength of the Redwood is still ever present. Brightest Blessings to all.

I Found My Name Through Meditation. In My Search I Found A... Feb 24th. at 2:45:19 am EST

Dreaming Cougar (Bryant, Arkansas US) Age: 39 - Email

I found my name through meditation. In my search I found a cougar sleeping peacfully on a rock. She awoke and spoke to me, saying that she would be my totem for a while and that I should follow my dreams to find peace. I only use this name while in ritual and within this website. To all others on the outside and in other rooms, I go by Caillech. I chose that name due to my Scottish ancestry and my closeness to the Crone in her many forms.

I believe that names are used sincerely by most 'true' pagans. Not to say that there are not some 'dabblers' that pop in here and there. Mainly, most people do actually use their chosen name. If you chat with a person for awhile, you can usually start to understand why a specific name was chosen. It speaks to them.

I Chose My Magickal Name From Things Relating To Me. My Magick... Feb 22nd. at 10:47:33 pm EST

Shane Honer (Truro, England UK) Age: 16 - Email

I chose my Magickal name from things relating to me. My Magick name is: Blue Fire-tiger, i decided to have part of name as tiger because my power animal is a tiger, i chose the word fire because that is my element and i chose the word Blue because when i first became an apprentice the earliest thing i visualized was a cold blue flame burning out a circle around me whenever i called the four quarters, my teacher later explained that this was mage fire. Hence the name Blue-Fire-Tiger. I also don't think that a magickal name is any sort of sheild that i hide behind, i also don't consider it any less real than my birth name, it is simply another designation that i assigned myself for the purpose of magickal workings, i feel that when doing magickal workings, if all those involved it seems to make everyone more equal and it also seems to make the proceedings more meaningful and more magickal.

AmberLion (Altoona, Pennsylvania US) Age: 29 - Email

After much searching my Wiccan name suddenly came to me out of the blue. It was so obvious that I wondered why it took me so long to find it. AmberLion. The "Amber" part comes from the goddess Freyja who wears the amber necklace Brisingaman. Being of Nordic/Germanic decent Freyja has become my patron deity.
The "Lion" part of my name is for my primary animal spirit guide; the African Lion. Now the name AmberLion is so much a part of me that I often forget to respond to my Christian name, Linda, which I felt never really fit me.

I Took My Name After Reading A Book That Is Very Dear... Feb 22nd. at 12:56:39 pm EST

Jaiyla (Dreamer Hare, or sometimes even Jessyka) (Punta Gorda , Florida US) Age: 19 - Email

I took my name after reading a book that is very dear to my heart. "Always Coming Home" by Ursula K. LeGuin has had the honor of being the work of fiction that has most influenced my life. In the culture of the Kesh, the people whom the book is about, everyone has three names that they take at different times of their lives... their first name they have through childhood, and it is given to them. Their middle and last names they choose when they reach a certain point in their lives, when they know the time is right. From this concept sprang my name... I knew I had reached the point of having a "middle name". I had been doing lots of art with rabbits, dreamer hares all representational and primitive, and these were the images that spoke to me. So I'm Dreamer Hare. I use other names that have meaning to me online, but Dreamer Hare is the one that I use in the circle and among close friends.

It Took Me Less Than A Minute To Decide What My Magical... Feb 22nd. at 12:33:40 pm EST

Amy Davis (South Deerfield, Massachusetts US) Age: 28 - Email

It took me less than a minute to decide what my magical name was. Ever since I was a little girl, my favorite color was purple. I had a purple room and purple clothes, purple get the picture. I began to read a comic book called "Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld" and saw that she was a beautiful woman with amazing powers, and she became like a role model to me. My birth name is Amy, and so without much difficulty my magical name became Amethyst. There's always an amethyst stone somewhere on my person!
