Question of the Week: 101 - 3/3/2003

Have You Made Any Extra Security Preparations?

Faced with the potential threats of terrorism and/or war, many governments have asked their citizenry to ‘be prepared’. Have you stocked up on any items? Do you have a first aid kit? How’s your plastic to duct tape ratio?
Should you ever have to vacate your home and you could only take ten (10) items with you, what would these items be?
If you are trained in outdoor survival skills, medical emergencies or in other related areas, what advice can you share with us on how to be prepared in case the unthinkable does come to pass? What ten things do you think everyone should have on hand?

Hi! I've made no preparations.I have first aid stuff, as always, but nothing else.I have duct tape, but only becuase I use it for everything, it's a great all purpose tool.BTW, use a blade on the non sticky side to cut it, and it doesn't ball up on ya. Where I live, we were always told that if the nukes came, we'd be among the first targets. So, I grew up figuring that the USSR or my own USA government would get me killed any day now.Around 1990, that threat subsided. So, I had 5 relatively quiet years before the bomb went off here in Oklahoma City. So, fear of crazy crackers came. Now, there are bio and chemical weapons! So what?I've lived my whole life, except for 4-5 years, believing I could die at any time. How's this any different?Worrying about it won't add one second to my life.I will live, love, die, and live again!Just as I did before. Peace and Love BrightStar

| There's Not Enough Duct Tape In The World! | Mar 11th. at 5:11:34 pm EST |

Maybe it's just me but anytime I try to duct tape an object the tape always ends up all crumpled up in a big sticky mess! A mess that is normally attached to a peice of my clothing or on one of my pups but never on the item I am attempting to tape. Is the US Government offering courses in duct tape application? No? Well there goes that brillant plan...
A first aid kit? Being a good former Girl Scout Leader I do have a first aid kit in my house. Do you think triple antibiotic ointment, cotton balls and a good pair of tweezers will help in the case of nuclear war? Again, is the Government teaching a special course on how to put together a first aid kit with all the necessary medical supplies for a nuclear war or invasion? No? Well, I guess cotton balls and antibiotic ointment will have to do in a crunch.
What would I grab on the way out of the house? Family, my dogs, a few blankets, the first aid kit and of course, duct tap and plastic. Acutally the duct tape and plastic might come in handy if the house has to be vacated...
Here's hoping that the world wakes up to the wisdom of Athene and turns away from the glamour of Ares.

First, I would like to say I agree with whom ever mentioned the Marsall Law issue. You are 100% right on that point. But you forgot about the One World Government. Second, What ever happens, happens. All I can do you if pray to the Goddess and God to protect my family and to guide us through what is out of our control. Third, It is my daughter I am sadden for. She will never know of the world of freedoms as I once did, as I never knew the freedoms that my parents had and so fourth. Forth, I stand behind my country but War never solved a thing. Is this one over a "God" issue or is it a "Money" issue? I have lost track here. Falling for the hipe is not going to so you, just make some else richer. Be the best you can to yourself and other around you. What is to be, will be.

Haven't taken any extra insecurity measures in my household. Whats the point? If we get nuked how in the heck is duct tape and plastic sheeting going to help? Frankly, if we do ever come under attack, I'd rather die quickly than watch my loved ones suffer around me. But, I doubt we will be attacked. Someone said below something about it being more likely that we fall under marshall law one of these days, and I agree. The way things are right now, sadly, I can see that happening if things don't improve.

This entire farce smacks of the "Great Y2K Disaster" Death comes to everyone eventually, why fight it? I live 10 miles from Westover AF base (a supply distribution base) so if it gets nuked I'm pretty well on my way to the Summerlands anyway regardless of preperation. My advise is to buy stock in companies that manufacture duct tape and plastic sheeting as well as stock in Wal-Mart (where do YOU buy YOUR duct tape and plastic sheeting?) . Smart@$$ remarks aside–I have invoked the Morrigan for protection. She never failed me in the past and I don't think she'll fail me now.

Being all of fourteen, I myself do not have much of a choice in making extra security precautions. I don't believe my parents have either, but then again, like most people, we all believe that duct tape is not going to save us. (Well, I'll have to get back to you with my Dad's answer, actually, - he uses duct tape for everything.) Hopefully, living in Canada, we are less likely to be affected, although you never know. The whole situation reminds me of something I read in a bathroom stall once, "Fighting for peace is like having sex for virginity". I know that we must strive to acheive peace, but must it be done so violently? I know it comes to a point where political discussions can only go so far, but it seems to me that war ought to be a last resort, if a resort at all.

| About That Duct Tape... | Mar 11th. at 11:10:34 am EST |

In response to the question, my fiance and I have not taken any precautions, though we often discuss what we would do if the nation were to come under martial law. These discussions could have been taken from Mad Max or Bladerunner, talk of guns and other weapons for defending ourselves and our homes from our fellow citizens. Quite frankly, I think that this is more plausible than invasion.
I think that the mention of Duct Tape (specifically the brand Duck Tape) is clever marketing. So, assuming every one does purchase the silver stuff and they tape plastic sheeting to the windows and vents. How does the average family of four breathe after 10 hours, while the chemical fallout is still settling outside? Can one really create an air-tight seal about the home? We are not prepared in any way for bio/chem warefare, and no ammount of Duct Tape will save us.
That is, unless we place a large swath of it right over Bush's fat gob!

If my fellow Pagans will forgive my reference to a passage I read recently in the Christian bible (pto the effect that "..You do not have to accept evil that some may try to hand to you". If you don't back this war of killing persons on the street who are people like us, then you can choose to walk away from it mentally and keep silence in the presence of those red-faced angry ferocious people who want to involve us.

I haven't prepared for terrorist attacks...I live within ten miles of three military bases, and the mountain under which NORAD's bunker is concealed is visible from my hilltop apartment. Either I'll be one of the first to die, or I'm safer here than in many other cities.
And the duct-tape-and-plastic things reminds me of those Fifties "duck and cover" films they showed schoolchildren during the height of the Cold War. It's a bit of good PR, but nothing more, a way to give people a false sense of security and add to the illusion that there is something one can do to avoid being killed as a (direct or indirect) result of our government's going to war.
I know I sound cynical, but I can't view this in any favorable light, and I rather more fear the stupid decisions made by the U.S. government than any possible terrorist threat. I feel that the question ought to be, what are we doing to fight the slow but steady removal of our civil rights?

The recent onslaught of creeping doom has prompted me to take drastic measures. I now breathe only when absolutely neccessary. I routinely open my neighbors' mail to verify the contents. I have equipped my mailbox with an incinerator that destroys all possible contagions long before they enter my home. I use a high powered zoom lens to photograph all vehicles, individuals, and vertabrates that come within visual range of my roof. All images are promptly emailed directly to Tom Ridge. As an added measure, I've pulled out my favorite pair of Spiderman Underoos. Evildoers beware.

| My Measure Of Security | Mar 10th. at 11:06:24 pm EST |

The T.V. is harboring so much negative emotion that I don't even turn it on anymore to watch 'All In The Family'. I'm 17, and I want to be a voice for the people that are my age in this matter. We hear all of this negativity and have to kind of wonder where our future lies. Are we going to get to go to college and raise kinder, or are we going to be poisoned by some airplane that happens to be flying over at any given moment? Are we going to be shipped off to a foreign country to fight a war that , especially from my Wiccan perspective, is against our ethics?
You wanna know what I've done for security? I pulled out my MELANIE CD. Remember her? That sing-songy 'Summer of Love' singer. I popped her cd in and sang all of her songs from the top of my lungs. Why? Because it made me feel good. It made me think that if there was a hope for a better world then ... then we can have hope for a better world now. And I felt the surge of energy course through me as I sang 'Raise Those Candles High, Because If You Don't We Could Stay Black Against The Night". I'm not willing to stay black agains the night. I'm willing to give my dose of joy in a world saddened by turbulence. That's my measure of security.

| Unprepared And Planning To Stay That Way | Mar 10th. at 10:44:34 pm EST |

My many times great grandfather was a rebel and an officer during the American Revolution. He fought because he wanted freedom for himself and his three sons, and because he believed in the potential of what was to eventually become the United States of America. I think he would be turning over in his grave if he saw the country he fought for as it is today.
I flatly refuse to be pushed into buying duct tape and plastic to prepare against possible chemical warfare. That's as logical as going into battle with a cap gun or plastic sword - it may feel better than being empty-handed but in the end it will do about as much good. I still hope this senseless war can be averted, but I will not run, I will not hide, and I will not saran-wrap my house if we are attacked.
