Question of the Week: 41 - 5/14/2001

What Makes You So Special?

What do you think is special about you? We generally aren't conditioned to believe that it is okay to think well of ourselves. But the point could be made that if we can't see what is 'special' about ourselves then we are constantly at the mercy of other people's opinions. We all know that compliments come and compliments go. So do criticisms. Claiming your own specialness allows you to keep your equilibrium through both the good and bad reviews of your life, behavior, work, religion or whatever anyone else feels free to comment upon.
Do the people in your life see your specialness? Have you dared to be open enough to show them? Ask a friend or acquaintance what they think is 'special' about you. Did you both come up with the same answers? And if you have always wanted to tell someone else what you think is special about him or her, here's your chance to do it!

I think what makes me *special* is that I'm totally mellow. I've been told that I'm so laid back that people think I'm in a coma! There really isn't a whole lot that can upset me, and for some reason, it seems to upset others, if you can believe that!
Examples would be how I trust my husband to go to a strip club or hang out with his bachelor friends, and I don't think twice about it. "Don't you worry he'll stray?" Naaah... I know who he comes home to. Politics don't ruffle my feathers much, either. It would take a whole lot to get me active in something - I even give Dubya the benefit of the doubt.
I think it also works in my favor, because at work, when everyone else is in a panic about where a file is, I can get up, open a drawer and pull it. I also take alot of things in stride, whereas alot of people I know become offended easily. Even when shock-jock Mancow Muller said last week how he wants to "...pull out [his] Glok and blow the brains out of every Wiccan", I know that his show is totally staged, that it's May Sweeps, he gets ratings by getting a rise out of people, and not to take a moron like him seriously.
So I guess *I* like to think I'm special in that regard, even if other people don't :)

| What Others Appreciate Most About Me Is My Volunteerism. Whether It's With... | May 19th. at 7:38:11 pm EDT |

| Sam-I-Am (Lawrencville, Georgia US) | Age: 29 - Email |

What others appreciate most about me is my volunteerism. Whether it's with little league, school, charitites, or community organizations I can be found helping. I feel that you get out of anything only what you put into it.
I've never felt that it's so special. To me it seem to be a basic need like food or shelter. I don't feel whole if I'm not helping somewhere! But I've been thanked often here near the end of the school year and I see what a difference I make. But most importantly, my kids know how much I love them since I'm involved in their lives.
I'm special because my kids say so!

| I Am Special In Many Ways, As Are We All. In My... | May 18th. at 2:55:37 am EDT |

| Ashur Fox (middle of nowhere) | Age: 26 |

I am special in many ways, as are we all. In my family, which is very matrilineal, I am the last of the bloodline, the eldest daughter of the eldest daughter, (and so on and so forth). And as such, my first born daughter will also be special as she will carry on the family bloodline. Friends have told me that they value my ability to remain upbeat and positive when everything is going wrong (which is pretty standard in my life unfortunately) and that I can make the most disasterous road-trips, vacations or get-togethers still something memorable and fun. Some recently met acquaintences told a friend of mine that I am "really there". She in turn expressed her definition of their comment to be that I know who I am and what I want, that my opinions are my own and that I am not afraid or ashamed to stand up for myself or others. But most of all, I like who I am. It took me a long time and a lot of heartache to finally come to know myself better, to like who I am and to love myself for every aspect of my personality.

| nick (Somewhere, Minnesota US) | Age: 20 - Email |

Nick sez
I'm special because of my abillity to question everything. I constantly question my beliefs and religion though I don't normallychange my mind about much. I mostly only reconfirm what's already in my head. It's good though to know that if there is something that I believe in that changes I know right away.
What really makes me special though is my abillity to help people by listening. Everyone always comes to me with there problems knowing that I'll always listen and never criticize. It isn't very often that I can give advice but I guess it must be a really big relief to unload your burden weather that person can give advice or not.
Some times I wish that some one would apreaciate my specialness. It can be a real pain in the bud for every one to unload themselves on me but none will returne the favore, but I guess thats how life is. I'm geting along either way so I guess its not that big a deal.
Though he will never read this but the most special person in my life is my Dad. He always pushes me to be the best that I can be. I never would have gotten as far as I am today if it wasn't for him. ""Thankyou Dad""

| Autumn Corcorran (Del City, Oklahoma US) | Age: 19 - Email |

My younger sister, Christina, is special in the fact that she is an extreme odd ball. If she were not an odd ball, then there would be no uniqueness to her already quirky personality. I don't say many nice or respectable things about my sister like I should, so this is for all the times I messed up and open my big mouth. This is to you Tina!

| I'm Usually Pretty Humble, But Heck, I'm Damn Special. I'm Quite Intelligent... | May 17th. at 7:43:48 pm EDT |

| Morrigan-Aa (woodbridge, New Jersey US) | Age: 26 - Email |

I'm usually pretty humble, but heck, I'm damn special. I'm quite intelligent and have an awesome memory. I have a MPhil in literature and am currently finishing up my PhD. As a newspaper reporter, I've managed to capitalize on my two great abilities in this incarnation: writing and listening. I'm a middling gardener who takes joy in the dirt, a devoted jogger and yogini (sort of) and a dedicated daughter of the Gods. I'm a singer with an angelic soprano voice and I have a band; my last band, Belladonna Bouquet, had a CD out on an indie label. I play the mountain dulcimer and the valiha (sort of), and I'm learning how to play the bowed psaltery. My feet are firmly on the earth, my head in the clouds and my heart wide-open with compassion.
I'm pretty good-looking too, for all it matters. I have grace under fire. I'm quiet.
As to whether others appreciate my specialness.... some do, but I'm not sure that it matters. We're conditioned to be critical, heartless and brutal, both to others and ourselves; it's the grease that keeps the corporate, consumerist world humming.
I'd like to take a moment to praise my parents for their specialness. Both have experienced great adversity in their lives, but managed to raise a family and keep a home. They're awesome gardeners and hard workers. My dad is an incredible woodworker who, during his lifetime, taught himself how to do knotwork, how to play musical instruments and even how to make them. My mom is a clearheaded businesswoman with a talent for cooking and making quilts. She also loves Victorian literature. They have always been open-minded and compassionate, helping those in need. Love ya, mom and dad!

| I've Been Used In Several Relationships, But Still Believe In True Love... | May 17th. at 2:42:48 pm EDT |

| Cherilyndria (East Troy, Wisconsin US) | Age: 18 - Email |

I've been used in several relationships, but still believe in true love. My parents fight constantly and my dad is an alcoholic, but I'm Daddy's little girl and love him dearly. My mom picks fights with me, and I have the strength not to be irrationalin the situation. My friends are the most important people in my life. I love them so much more thatn I ever let on. I am extremely artistic, and would spend all my time drawing or making things. To be honest, I like sex ALOT, but I NEVER over step my boundaries, and always stay in control in the times most people lose control. I'm loud in my fashion and stick out in a crowd, but am actually very shy in person. I probably have missed a lot of opportunities, but know as long as the goddess and my sister are watching out for me, I will strive. I hate being alone, but I don't need conversation. I can sit with a close friend, even on the phone, for hours with nothing to say, and be happy. My best friend and I will sit on the phone for four to five hours an only talk for the first twenty minutes. I just need to know someone is there.

| What's So Special About Me? I Have A Cascade Of Auburn Hair... | May 17th. at 10:53:46 am EDT |

| Lauryl Stone (Chapel Hill, North Carolina US) | Age: 33 - Email |

What's so special about me? I have a cascade of auburn hair that hangs down past my waist. I have a wicked sense of humor and a quick intelligence. I can take complex ideas and distill them into their essence, for easy explaining. I'm a mover and a shaker when it comes to hobbies I'm passionate about--I can form communities and lead them to greatness. I have an innate sense of fairness and am willing to fight for what I believe in. I make buttermilk biscuits and cornbread from scratch. I'm a trustworthy and reliable friend, wife, sister, aunt. I love cats. I'm not afraid to cry during movies/TV shows. I believe in tolerance and kindness. So yes, I am special, and I'm worth it! :)

| I Am Special Because, As One Post Put It, I Am Still... | May 17th. at 6:07:33 am EDT |

| Adaryn (San Giovanni, Italy) | Age: 22 - Email |

I am special because, as one post put it, I am still here. After facing distaster after life-altering disaster, I haven't crumbled, I've become stronger. I am a fabulous mother, and I've stopped letting people walk all over me. I'm a typical Gemini, constantly of 2 minds, but I don't see it as a bad thing anymore, I see it as a blessing. It gives me tons of insight into people I thought I hated. I speak my mind. I'm not ashamed of who I am. I am mentally a few years behind my peers, but I didn't know it in school, my parents refused to tell me. I barely passed high school but I passed. I'm also the poster child for contradictions and it keeps my loved ones on their toes, lol. I learn quickly and easily and I love to have new experiences, even bad ones because they are the ones that make me strong. Mostly, I am special because I'm me and I adore who I am, even the side I exposed in the guilty secrets question.

| Heather (Deep in the Heart, Texas US) | Age: 19 |

I think I'm special because I'm still *here*.
My parents split when I was 2 (after they gave my [still unknown to me] brothers up for adoption). My grandparents raised me until they died when I was a pre-teen. I had an abusive father who recently died. My mom joined the army, and has hardly ever been around. I went through 15 different homes/living arrangements and 10 schools. I didn't graduate. I've been through 4 jobs. I'm only 19. I'm paying for my own braces from working a retail job. I *still* don't know how I've gotten through it all.
I think I'm special because I'm still *here*.

| Angie McMullen (Montoursville, Pennsylvania US) | Age: 22 - Email |

Wow, this is a topic that most people are usually hesitant to talk about(including yours truly here:) ). I'm special because I've been blessed with someone to love and love me back. I've also been blessed with 3 wonderful animals that own me more than I own then(sarcasm: as if another being can truly own another being). Also I'm a Wicce who has found this remarkable religious Path and belief system. Some People would say if they were in my position that their life would be horrible but I think my life is great and am happy with it so far.
Love and Light
~Angie;)
