Question of the Week: 85 - 11/17/2002

What’s Your Motivation?

What motivates you? What is the guiding principle(s) by which you steer your course? The Rede? Freedom and Justice for All? Honor? Kindness? Truth?
Have you ever had to wrestle with conflicting impulses or actions that may be contrary to what you hold to be your guide? How did you resolve it?
Is there a quotation (or quotations) that best sums up the ideals that you try to live up to or that is your inspiration? Please share it!

The phrase Carpe Dium Has a vibe to it that will not allow you to escape it. I hear the phrase and know what it means, this is what gets me through life. I know what i am capable of and what i want, so i go for it to the maximum. Only, while doing this the Wiccan Rede echoes in my mind.

My sister loves top search the net for stuff about aliens and conspiracies. Often, she sounds completely wacky. Occasionaly she comes across something that seems to fit, seems obvious but always nice to hear again and nice to repeat to one's self. My favorite, that I think of every day is "You create your own reality". Obvious right? But when you think about it not everybody beleives in complete free will. I really beleive we bring on our own realties. Your actions may not always catch up to you right away but I beleive they will, someday. So this is what motivates me. I, like everyone, want a happy, pleasant abundant reality; a balenced and harmonious world. Like I said something take a while to catch up. If everyone worked for such a world we would have one. So, my every action is dedicated to bringing about that harmomy...even if it is only in my car, in line at the store or in my own home with my children (who get told they creat their own reality when they get put into time out!!)Peace.

Some people might call me an immoral person, because I don't believe in morals the way most other people do. I view clear cut morals like "harming someone is wrong", etc. are social programming at best. Of course, just because I'm not Wiccan and don't have any real sense of moral boundry doesn't mean I'll go off doing whatever I wish. Although I certainly don't have any restraints as to what I can do, I just don't abuse that privledge which I give myself. What motivates me to try and steer away from what most people term "negative" magick is the fact that I also promise myself that I will accept total responsibility for whatever actions I may commit. By this I don't mean the Three Fold Law, by this I mean the reactions of people around me and chain events that may occur from my actions. If I'm frightened by the potential consequences, then simply won't commit the act (also because if I'm worried about the outcome, my magick won't be quite as potent anyway).
I guess I'm kind of Taoist on my view there, but I try not to view the world as divided between colors or elements or anything else. I believe that it's important to see it as a whole and accept it as a whole of both positive and negative, and I don't deny myself of negativity if that's what I feel must be done.

I also try and be grateful for all blessings God/dess and Universe has bestowed upon me in the past, in my present and in my future. I like to say "Thank You" to God/dess and Universe daily (or at least aim for that). My little ritual is to just say "Thank You" and mean it whilst pouring a libation onto the Earth.
Sometimes I like to take a minute and reflect on what I have to be grateful for: from physical things such as not being disabled, my cat Bibs, being able to hear and see, my computer working, etc to the more spiritual which includes any lessons learnt as well as guidance given.

The Wiccan Principles of Belief (*not* the Wiccan Rede), my own Personal Rede as well as various personal mottos are my guiding principles. Emphasis on "Guiding" - they are not commandments and I can ignore all these guidelines whenever I want - at the same time I do accept responsibility for my actions, thoughts and feelings (be they "good" or "bad"). My personal rede is such: Respect and live in Harmony with myself, Respect and live in Harmony with Others (including society, the wider community) and I am responsible for my actions, thoughts and feelings and their subsequent repercussions (be they "good" or "bad"). Two of my mottos are: "Walk in Light, Walk in Shadow", "I am here to understand not to be understood" :-)

for sheer get up and go power, I've always liked:

I live life with Joy in my heart and share it daily. And in life what you send forth is often what returns. So live life with joy.
I heard this from Donna Reed Show: "When you deal with others, use your heart. When you deal with yourself, use your heart."
Between the heart and the spirit lies the true path.

Sure willpower motivates me. Knowing and believing beyond a shadow of a doubt that if I put my mind to something it will be accomplished.

I guess my major motivation force is honesty, honestly recognising who and what I am, then honestly trying to live by my principles. I think it's best summed up by this extract from the Desiderata
"You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here. And whether it is clear to you or not, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul."

I seek truth through science. I am a physicist whose specialty is cosmology. I find truth in mathematics, science, research, and relationships with my grandchildren. I do not know if there is a God/Godess or not, but I am open to discussion on the subject and widely read. If truth is to be found in magic, I would appreciate an intelligent discussion about why it represents truth. I cannot call myself an atheist, but rather agnostic. I've learned enough about science to know just what it is that I don't know.
