Question of the Week: 108 - 4/28/2003

Do You Speak Pagan Geek?

Are you techno-savvy? A Diva of the Database? A Sorcerer of Software? Well, not all Pagans are so adept and they could probably use some techno-tips!
If you know of any good Pagan (or non-Pagan) software, spam-fighters, anti-virus software programs, pop-up zappers or the like, please share your knowledge with us!
If you have questions relating to these issues and would like some guidance, feel free to post your questions here. Perhaps some Pagan web guru can provide an answer for you.
If you offer FREE Pagan related graphics, email postcards or other web tools and/or goodies, tell us where to find you. We all like treats!

I constantly call myself a Pagan geek!
I love lunabar by clysmic.com Like someone else said, it calculates full moons, equonoxes, planatary hours, position of constilations etc. All for your exact GPS coordinates. Very nifty, and how impressive is it to say, "The New Moon will be May 1st at 8:16 AM EST"? Oh yeah, you'll be getting all the chicks. ;-)
I'm always on mIRC and I've programed alieses and popups to say "Merry Meet" when ever you enter the room, and that greeting also changes for the holidays, right now when you enter chat it says "Blessed Beltane!" A few friends and I are currently programing a Pagan trivia bot! (We are currently located at irc.chathosting4u.net:7000 #EarthSpirit for those interested.) There are also a few Pagan IRC networks, which really suprised me, like irc.peacefulhaven.net and irc.paganpaths.org
Also you gotta love Drak.net Pagan website hosting!

| FileMaker Pro And Editing | Apr 29th. at 4:35:05 pm EDT |

| Sara (TC, MN) | Age: 21 - Email |

I have experience with all the basics but the helpful thing is I am becoming fairly knowedgeable with FileMaker Pro (worked on 5, 5.5, and will be getting 6 soon) . I don't work with any file sharing cababilities but have been wanting to learn. For those who don't know it's a wonderful Mac and PC compatable database program, much better (but also spendier) than Access. I have a fairly extensive database that I also might be willing to share.
Also for those who have web sites I am willing to work to help you proof read pages and text.

Sorry, I forgot to say that if anyone thinks they can offer their services to either the running or design of my site, or if they would like to offer services like Tarot reading, horoscopes etc free of charge, please email me or visit my site.
Thanks and Blessed Be,

Well, let's see...I run my own Community website for Pagans. I'm not that techno-minded, but my site has won a Golden Web Award for this year and it's doing well in the Witchcraft Top 100 Poll (No.11 last time I checked) . All the graphics I use are borrowed from sites offering free graphics e.g. The Coven of the Silver Light. They're a great place, you can find them at: http://members.lycos.co.uk/covensilverlight Anyone is welcome to use my graphics (except the sigs, Dolls Dolls and Sigs [found at: http://groups.msn.com/dollsdollsandsigs] will make you your own, again for free!) . If you're going to use my graphics though, I'd prefer it if you either joined the group or linked to my site (or both!) . My site has just started offering free services - I do free birth charts and readings of my very own Truth Cards. We also have a swap shop. And, new today on my site, predictions for the month ahead! At the moment, it's just me and my Truth Cards in there, but I'm hoping to get people offering horoscopes (Western and eastern) , Tarot readings, Rune readings etc. If you're interested in any of this, please visit my site, by clicking on the weblink. Big witchy hugs to all at Witchvox for giving me the chance to do some much-needed advertising!! Hope to see some new people on my site soon,
Blessed Be,
SilverRaven. xx

I can help with problems in the MS Office software, especially Word and Publisher. If I can't help, I know a number of geeky Pagans around here who can. :)

| Free Anti-Virus Protection! | Apr 29th. at 1:04:25 am EDT |

| Angie (Long Beach, CA USA) | Age: 38 - Email |

My forte is PC hardware. I am the IT Manager for an electrical contractor so that makes me a Pagan Geek :)
My contribution will be to point anyone who may be in need of some cheap/free anti-virus protection to a good source: www.grisoft.com
There you can download a free version of AVG, a very good anti-virus program. Make sure you keep it updated and you should be well protected. That is, with a firewall in use as well. You can find an excellent (and also free for the home user!) firewall from the fine people at: www.sybergen.com
With these two programs running on your PC, you should be very well protected.
Blessings to you all and Happy (and safe!) Surfing! :)

| Cute Moon Phase Program | Apr 29th. at 1:03:04 am EDT |

| Dionysia (Toronto) | Age: 23 - Email |

Merry Meet,
There is a great little program that I love called LunaBar. It puts a graphic on your lower right screen corner that charts the phase of the moon and the sign that it is currently in. The program itself is freeware, but if you register the program for a nominal fee, many other options are open to you - such as calculating the phases for different time zones than your own, or for future or past dates.
Also, at a site called IAmAWitch.com there is a planetary hour calculator which is just fantastic for planning spellwork!
Blessed Be,
Dionysia

| For Handspring And Palm | Apr 28th. at 4:30:47 pm EDT |

| Korbeau (Sherbrooke) | Age: 25 - Email |

I have a handspring and i found a little software very useful on twocows.
The name is Pagan Resource (make by GlitchWare) . With this, you can keep track of recipes, stones, herbs ro oils. You have a database for colors too and all theres meaning in rituals. You have a section for the runes where you can draw it and record theres meaning. At last, you can record your prayers (or composes it) whenever you want. :)
I use the version 1.5 but i know the version 2 is out. You can download it free.
Now tell me, am I a really pagan geek? ;)

Pop-Up Stopper from Panicware seems to work fairly well. There's both a free and a pay version; I only have the free version. I have it on my Windows box; I don't know if it has or will work on a Macintosh or Linux. The latest version flashes in the lower right system tray and will briefly change your pointer to a red circle with a slash through it whenever a popup appears. I like it a fair bit! A search on 'Panicware' should give you the web address.
If you actually -want- a popup to appear, such as with some web-based email systems like with Earthlink, it's simple: hold down the control key before clicking, and the window will appear! Once it appears, you can release the key.
I don't have much in the way of pagan graphics right now. I don't do a whole lot of that stuff, but the idea's now come to me that I could. And I very well might, once I find the time!
Speaking of graphics, a good -and free- program to use for editing graphics is the GIMP. It originated as a Linux program, but has been adapted for Windows use. I'm not sure about Macintosh. It's a fairly heavy program, and installing it can be a bit of a headache for those that don't know a lot about computers. Once done, however, it's a pretty nice program that allows you to do some nifty manipulation and creation effects. I haven't piddled with most of the nifty little gadgets associated with it, but I do know I like it!
