Question of the Week: 85 - 11/17/2002 What’s Your Motivation? What motivates you? What is the guiding principle(s) by which you steer your course? The Rede? Freedom and Justice for All? Honor? Kindness? Truth? Have you ever had to wrestle with conflicting impulses or actions that may be contrary to what you hold to be your guide? How did you resolve it? Is there a quotation (or quotations) that best sums up the ideals that you try to live up to or that is your inspiration? Please share it! |

I guess my major motivation force is honesty, honestly recognising who and what I am, then honestly trying to live by my principles. I think it's best summed up by this extract from the Desiderata "You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here. And whether it is clear to you or not, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul." |

I seek truth through science. I am a physicist whose specialty is cosmology. I find truth in mathematics, science, research, and relationships with my grandchildren. I do not know if there is a God/Godess or not, but I am open to discussion on the subject and widely read. If truth is to be found in magic, I would appreciate an intelligent discussion about why it represents truth. I cannot call myself an atheist, but rather agnostic. I've learned enough about science to know just what it is that I don't know. DT |

What keeps me going more than anything else is that I know where I truly belong, and I feel secure in the place I have found within myself. Even when I was very young, I realized that the strictly Roman Catholic life my parents wanted me to lead was not for me at all. It was a hot point, especially between my father and I, ever since I realized, at about age 10, what it really was that I was being drawn to. My parents taught tolerance, but could not tolerate such a difference in their daughter. The turning point in my struggle to finally become myself out of my own free will came when I met the man I was to marry. He was the epitome of everything Mom and Dad feared and disliked. Christmas of the year 2000 was a mess for us all becuase of this. I moved out New Year's Day, and married at the end of last January. Ever since, life has been a journey of discovery and learning. I'm in a place where people delight in who I am. It's no small thing to me that I see the arrival of my husband into my life as a gift that will forever be sacred. So, my purpose is freedom of will and caring and empathy for all life. What you chose to do with life is your decision, but be sure that you always give back, and give even if there's nothing to get back. |

To strive for a balance between dark and light so that I may live life down to the last little bit, well that's more poetic than the general sense but that's the whole idea. Also, Truth is a great motivation for me. It's easy to tell Lies to keep our bodies, but to tell the Truth is a great deal easier on the mind and soul. I also don't want it all to come back and bite me in the tush, so there. :-) |

The ideas of balance and Self-responsibility are what motivate me as a Witch and a human being. I come from a fundamentalist version of Christianity, where I could petition Deity and somehow hope that my behavior would qualify me for a positive answer. This left me in somewhat of a "victim" mode. The idea that I can take responsibility, and work my will (for the good of all) through Magick, was and is liberating to say the least. The striving for balance motivates me as I witness Mother Earth going through Her circle of changes, and I witness first hand the Wisdom of the Elements in their process of give and take. Blessed Be. |

My four month old son is my motivation. To be able to know that I did something so right that the Goddess would bless me with such a gift is motivation enough for me. |
