Question of the Week: 1 - 8/7/2000 Who are you going to vote for and why? Which political platform or candidate are you leaning towards? Do you think that a level of political involvement is important to pagans? Are you registered to vote, will you vote and who -if you don't mind telling the world- are you planning to vote for (or against)? |

Personally, I find neither the Republican nor the Democratic candidates very palatable. I will, however, be casting my vote for the asses this fall for the sole reason that I cannot stand the thought of Dubya picking as many Supreme Court justices as he could during his tenure. |

I am currently leaning towards a 3rd party candidate, as the Jackasses and the Elephants are pretty much the same. I am a registered voter and as such I feel I do not need to belong to a party but should always try to vote for the person I think is best. Should I become a mindless drone who votes strickly on one party ticket or the other --Hell NO! I am a mishmash of "conservative" and "liberal" ideas. If Jesse Ventura were to throw his hat in the ring at the last minute I would vote for him. We could have controversy of a different sort in the white house. Think of mid-east peace talks being held in a ring with the victor getting Jerusalem. I know that is a bit irreverant but I am going to vote my conscience and not follow the adds. G.W. Bush is a puppet for his father and Gore well we don't want him back in TN but I personally don't want to see him win the Presidency. Both talk real pretty but I have yet to hear anything of worth, just empty promises given by someone who is telling the voters what they want to hear. |

I lean most toward the Libertarian platform, and so I am registered as one. However, because I realize that the electoral process of our nation truly only works well with two (and only two) candidates, I am going to have to choose the lesser of two evils. On the left hand, we have the bleeding-heart post (describing both how intelligent and how animated he is. On the right we have the born-again sleaze. Unfortunately, McCain didn't survive the trail, so I'll have to go with the post; we can probably survive another four years of that type, and I hate to think of the alternative. I belive that a level of political involvement is important for all people, but oft' overlooked/persecuted/belittled minority groups need to be involved more than most. |

I'm going to vote for Vice-President Gore. I would rather not live under the reign of 'G. Dubya'. Gore might not be perfect, but at least he's not Pat Robertson's little pet senator. |

GreenParty. Who better to take back the control from the corperations than a consumer advocate? I for one am tired of indentured incumbants, the fact is both partys owe there vote to the big corperations who fund their campaigns. We are taxed into oblivion while our government accounts to no one, to the tune of unknown trillions. Demand an audit down to the last dollar, to expect less is toallowing the wolf to guard the hen house.Apathy is the real enemy, and yes I believe that a a real core group of supporters can make a difrence, Gov.Ventura did it in Minnesota with wrestling fans, Pagans could do it for Nader. Besides being an advocate of personal freedoms, he is the only canidate that has even mentioned alternitive fule sources. Keep in mind Gore and Bush are dripping in OIL |

I am certaintly well past leaning for anyone...I will surely be voting for Al Gore this November. It is my belief that he is the politician that is not only the most 'malleable' in his opinions towards non mainstream faiths, but is also the candidate out of all liberal possibilities who stands the best chance on a realistic level of winning this election. Ralph Nader is a wonderful person also, but for him to be running in a separate party is just splitting the democratic vote and helping the Nazis...oops, excuse me, Republicans to regain the White House. As someone who is originally from Europe, I know first hand the dangers of having too many political parties, this is after all how the Nazis (there's that word again) gained power in Germany in the late 30s. It is EXTREMELY important for pagans to vote. As our respective faiths gain more media attention, they are also more open to the scrutiny and overt discrimination of the religous right and their lackeys...don't let them get this chance! Exercise your voice in the most powerful means possible and VOTE! |

Choice. Freedom to choose the person that closest represents my concerns and aspirations about the future. What a choice! I am a Liberal, tried and true, card-carrying member of the ACLU and the Sierra Club and I can't see a choice. But I will choose and I will do my homework about the cadidates because I am a Liberal. I am a part of this country and as long as I wave the First Amendment around I better do the responsible thing and vote. I consider the act of voting one of the most powerful collective rituals we have. A simple act, a mark, a punch, a pull of a lever and we change history, select the leader of the free world. Conspiracy theorists aside, we do our part, for good or bad (oh, those Reagan years!) To vote is to speak. To speak is to be heard. To be heard is to lead. By leading the way for our children, we can help establish a future where they will live without the intolerance and fear that we had to. It is for them that we do these things anyway. |

I am leaning towards the democrats (though at times I seriously think about voting libertarian). This is only because ofthe Republicans ties with the Christian Coalition, and Bush's endorsement of that Jesus day. That really annoyed me. I don't know much about Gore unfortunately, because the press just doesn't give him as much coverage, but from what I know of him I would rather he be in the oval office than Bush. I am not yet ergistered because I have not been in my home state since the beginning of the summer. I am getting registered just as soon as I get home in 2 weeks though. I think that political awareness is very important for pagans. Though we have a right to religious freedom if the people we let into power don't agree with that freedom and they convince enough people that they are right, they can vote it right out of the constitution. It wouldn't take as much as some people might thing. |

Well, let's see. #1, I'm leaning towards Nader personally. As for the level of involvement, I think *everyone* should be involved in politics, even if it's just informing yourself about the issues, and making an intelligent vote, whether it be for the local town/city elections or the biggie - the Prez. And I don't mean relying on your best friend's brother's girl/boyfriend's opinion. Hey, they might be political geniuses, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't think for yourself. ::grin:: Yes, I'm registered to vote. Did it the day I as eligible to, but missed out on the last presidential. :-( I'm voting *against* G.W. "Jesus Day" Bush. That's as far as I'll commit before the booth. :-) |

While I am a registered Democrat, I find myself leaning more towards the platforms of the Socialist and Green parties. I wish both parties would receive more exposure, so the general population would know that there are alternatives to the two (or is that three now?) parties. Given the current state of religious freedom in this country (which I think is precarious), any pagan who cares about their community and world at large should be at least aware of the political state of the country, and especially their local area (given how we are seeing more communities banning teaching of evolution and supporting some religions while ignoring and bashing others). It saddens me to think that there are probably many Pagans/Witches/Wiccans who either don't think they can make a difference or that it's not really a priority in their lives. Yes, I am registered to vote, and I will be voting this fall (via absentee ballot). All I know so far is I am again voting against the Republican party because I would fear for many of the freedoms I currently enjoy. |
