Question of the Week: 108 - 4/28/2003

Do You Speak Pagan Geek?

Are you techno-savvy? A Diva of the Database? A Sorcerer of Software? Well, not all Pagans are so adept and they could probably use some techno-tips!
If you know of any good Pagan (or non-Pagan) software, spam-fighters, anti-virus software programs, pop-up zappers or the like, please share your knowledge with us!
If you have questions relating to these issues and would like some guidance, feel free to post your questions here. Perhaps some Pagan web guru can provide an answer for you.
If you offer FREE Pagan related graphics, email postcards or other web tools and/or goodies, tell us where to find you. We all like treats!

| Free Anti-Virus Protection! | Apr 29th. at 1:04:25 am EDT |

| Angie (Long Beach, CA USA) | Age: 38 - Email |

My forte is PC hardware. I am the IT Manager for an electrical contractor so that makes me a Pagan Geek :)
My contribution will be to point anyone who may be in need of some cheap/free anti-virus protection to a good source: www.grisoft.com
There you can download a free version of AVG, a very good anti-virus program. Make sure you keep it updated and you should be well protected. That is, with a firewall in use as well. You can find an excellent (and also free for the home user!) firewall from the fine people at: www.sybergen.com
With these two programs running on your PC, you should be very well protected.
Blessings to you all and Happy (and safe!) Surfing! :)

| Cute Moon Phase Program | Apr 29th. at 1:03:04 am EDT |

| Dionysia (Toronto) | Age: 23 - Email |

Merry Meet,
There is a great little program that I love called LunaBar. It puts a graphic on your lower right screen corner that charts the phase of the moon and the sign that it is currently in. The program itself is freeware, but if you register the program for a nominal fee, many other options are open to you - such as calculating the phases for different time zones than your own, or for future or past dates.
Also, at a site called IAmAWitch.com there is a planetary hour calculator which is just fantastic for planning spellwork!
Blessed Be,
Dionysia

| For Handspring And Palm | Apr 28th. at 4:30:47 pm EDT |

| Korbeau (Sherbrooke) | Age: 25 - Email |

I have a handspring and i found a little software very useful on twocows.
The name is Pagan Resource (make by GlitchWare) . With this, you can keep track of recipes, stones, herbs ro oils. You have a database for colors too and all theres meaning in rituals. You have a section for the runes where you can draw it and record theres meaning. At last, you can record your prayers (or composes it) whenever you want. :)
I use the version 1.5 but i know the version 2 is out. You can download it free.
Now tell me, am I a really pagan geek? ;)

| Not Much Experience, But... | Apr 28th. at 4:06:56 pm EDT |

Pop-Up Stopper from Panicware seems to work fairly well. There's both a free and a pay version; I only have the free version. I have it on my Windows box; I don't know if it has or will work on a Macintosh or Linux. The latest version flashes in the lower right system tray and will briefly change your pointer to a red circle with a slash through it whenever a popup appears. I like it a fair bit! A search on 'Panicware' should give you the web address.
If you actually -want- a popup to appear, such as with some web-based email systems like with Earthlink, it's simple: hold down the control key before clicking, and the window will appear! Once it appears, you can release the key.
I don't have much in the way of pagan graphics right now. I don't do a whole lot of that stuff, but the idea's now come to me that I could. And I very well might, once I find the time!
Speaking of graphics, a good -and free- program to use for editing graphics is the GIMP. It originated as a Linux program, but has been adapted for Windows use. I'm not sure about Macintosh. It's a fairly heavy program, and installing it can be a bit of a headache for those that don't know a lot about computers. Once done, however, it's a pretty nice program that allows you to do some nifty manipulation and creation effects. I haven't piddled with most of the nifty little gadgets associated with it, but I do know I like it!
