Question of the Week: 63 - 10/21/2001 Have You Done Any Protection Spells or Workings? Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11th, have you done any protection spells or workings for yourself and your family? Have you done any for the military forces or for the nation? How about something geared toward the biological/chemical threats? Have you participated in any of the calls for a binding spell aimed at stopping/finding those responsible? Do you plan to do something like this in your Samhain rituals this year? Have you asked your Gods/Ancestors/ spirits to watch over you, guard you or aid you in such magickal endeavors? Do you think that the recent events will change how you usually celebrate or participate in Samhain rituals? |

I have done nothing since 9/11, no rituals, no spells, no meditations. The nearest thing has been to set a candle in the window every night in memory of the dead. I've seen a lot of people talking about protection spells and the like but I just haven't had the energy for it. My mind understands how it would be a good idea, but my heart just hasn't been interested. Maybe I'll start tonight, with the dark moon, a small cleansing ritual and a talk with the Lady. |

I have done many things relating to 9/11: Firstly, I agree with Tarostar regarding certain Universal things. I believe more in the ripple effect of changing myself and helping others around me. Hopefully it can ripple outward from there. Normally I believe in finding peaceful solutions. This is different for me and I waited almost 3 weeks to get over the "need" of doing more. It didn't go away so I went beyond my first attempts. The first attempts were for helping us get through shock and pain. To learn, and to be open. To not react through emotions alone. It is however almost impossible to not be swayed by these emotions as I am too. Then, I went for justice. I did a "nailing" spell for bin Lauden and terrorists like him. This would include *any* who use terrorism. It was for capturing and bringing to justice. I do this with the knowing the same shall come to me. It is well worth being called on any wrong I may do to have a chance at stopping something like this. I don't practice terrorism but surely I've bullied others in my life. This is the time to do what is right for you. If you can heal yourself, good. If you can help others, good. If you want to actively find a solution, good. Blessings |

I've done protection work since the tragedy first took place, not necessarily for myself and my family but for my city as a whole. The outpouring of love and light which has been flowing here into New York the past month has been simply tremendous. I think I can speak for other Pagans here when I say it's deeply appreciated. In my opinion, this Samhain will be particularly special, and extremely important. In the past few months, I have felt something in my heart about this Samhain that I could not explain. I now believe wholeheartedly that this is a golden opportunity for magickal folk to "do the Work". In particular, there is a great need for comfort of souls, for lack of a better phrase. There are literally thousands of lost souls wandering aimlessly around this city. So many have become "earthbound", are confused, etc. The feeling is particularly strong around the lower Manhattan area, but it can be felt all over. So much wandering and confusion. We have so many gifted people in our community, I believe it is our responsibility to aid and assist our nation, and this Samhain is such a prime opportunity. Whether it's the warriors among us who can work bindings and help bring justice to the cruel perpetrators of these acts, or the healers among us who will be helping to comfort the dead and perhaps help the earthbound among them pass on to the rest which awaits them, I believe we can and should do everything in our power this Samhain. Witches stopped Hitler from invading Britain in WW2. We know how strong we are, and in our strength and unity this Samhain we can work a magick like that the world has never seen before. In this beautiful city, there is a shining Goddess of hope and freedom who stands in the harbor as a beacon of light to this nation, and her name is Lady Liberty. This Samhain I'm going to call upon her to bring healing and peace to the people who need it. |

Since I was in 6th grade I've been wanting to learn more about wicca and magick. As I've been maturing I've tried to take the time to read a little and purchase books that can help inform me about the practice. Since Sept. 11, 2001, I've been looking for spells that may help with spreading positivity, love and peace throughout all lands. I plan on doing a few protection spells for myself, family and friends and others I care about. I wish there was a more peaceful way to combat terrorism but there isn't. I just hope more innocent lives aren't taken and that if they are that them and those who lost their lives on Sept. 11th, their souls go to a higher level of consciousness can help us with ending this peacefully and that their lives were not taken in vain. I also hope that we all can and will learn from this to live our lives to the fullest while we're here , learn from one another and embrace diversity and not waste our time on useless trivia. There is much to celebrate in and of our diversity. That and our experiences is what makes us who we are and may become. We are all special and we all have the same basic needs therefore we are not as different as we think we are ONE. |

Hi!; I view these calls for magical action, because of political events, in the same light as I do Pagan political activists calls to protest, at the drop of a hat, for the activist's pet agenda. I don't dance to anyone's political tune, nor to anyone's call to work the Art, just because something in the World is askew. I don't fear the World in which I live. Shit happens. I don't think Witches need magical protection from the World. That is a panic re-action worthy of Cowans. Such calls to work the Art for political, economic, military and diplomatic ends are much too vague and indefinite for the Magic to be effective. It is just like those silly calls to do Magic, which run through the "Neo" community, for saving whales trapped in the ice, for punishing the idea of rape, for protecting wolf packs from hunters, for healing Mother Gaea from strip mining, etc., etc., ad nauseam infinitum. Politically and ecologically motivated "magic" usually result in no change at all. It is the proverbial pissing in the wind. Most especially, because it is pushed by some radical activist, just out to motivate bodies to form a power base for a political statement. The best thing to do would be to stay off the "astral" and not stress the higher planes of being, at this kind of sensitive Time. Witches are not workers on that side of the veil. Witches work comes later, as the human survivors need personal comfort and spellwork for their well-being. Witches work with the Human, not the animal, vegetable, mineral or Cosmic. Also, not with the political. Especially, as the political will make you more enemies than you really need. Work with Humanity on the personal; one on one, basis. The Cosmos will sort itself out. |

On September 11th I awoke to the news that the Trade Center had been destroyed by a terrorist attack. I knew at that point we were at war. It was just a matter of time before we knew who the opposition was. As much as I dislike war I know it happens. To this end I support our government and the soldiers fighting to end terrorism. I wrote the following to help myself, my family, and my friends cope with the situation and send my support to our soldiers. Soldiers' Blessing I take the Lord and Lady's hands We cast a circle and bless this land As our soldiers fight this awful war We invoke the power of the directions four. From the East we call the wind... Strength and courage we do send. From the South we call the fire... Endurance we send..They will never tire. From the West the water we call... Wash away destruction, America stand tall! From the north we call the Earth's power Freedom shall reign and terrorists will cower. This blessing we send with love and light, To aid our soldiers as they fight. So Mote It Be! |

I have done a protection spell for my whole family, my friends, and my boyfriend. I also pray to Goddess and God every night to protect my family, friends and soulmate. This Samhain will be my first 'out of the closet' Samhain. My boyfriend and I will probably include a protection spell in our Samhain ritual to make sure our families are safe. My heart goes out to the victims families, and the brave firefighters and police who worked to put out fires and search through the collapsed buildings. Blessed Be. |
