Question of the Week: 73 - 12/31/2001 Do You Believe in Faeries? Faeries, the Good Folk, the Sidhe and many more Otherworld beings of this type populate the folklore and tales of the world. So such beings exist? Did they ever? Are they an archetype, a memory of a long-lost people or simply that thing that we catch out of the corner of our eye? Have you ever had a Fae Encounter? Tell us your favorite 'faery tale' and point us to it if the source is on the net. And don't forget your pixie dust. |

Of course I believe in the beings of faerie. I have a gnome companion that has been with me as long as I can remember in this life time; he stays invisible always - but there are other ways to sense him. There are other being that live in and around my house since it seems that believing in them also draws them.. But many exist here in Montana; most here are more connected to nature and the wheel of the seasons. I have even encountered some beings I call "Forest Lords" for no other reason that the take care of an area of forest and contain great power. They look like the mythic representation of a satyr but are more balanced, wise, and perhaps a bit sad/tired of dealing with those that no longer believe and thus are blind to the realms around them. I find concentrations of beings around old growth forests and trees. Also gateways are easily constructed in such areas to faerie, but remember that not are beings there are of light or healing. As to who they are; they have always been around here and elsewhere. If you see an animal in your house and you know yours are outside; well it just might be a faerie folk letting you see them, and your mind translating their form to something more easily believed. Bloody right I believe in Faeries.Since I was a little kid wandering in the woods I always knew I had protecter spirits watching out for me and I still feel safer in the woods than I ever did in my own house(I would have said home but the woods are far more of a home to me than some building) |

I tend to be skeptical, but I've had an experience that makes me behave as though I believe. A little background: I'm a musician at Renaissance festivals. There is one particular faire site I go to where I have often lost equipment. The first weekend I was there, I lost a capo, a fairly small but necessary tool. Though I searched for a long time for this piece of white metal and described it to a lot of people, it was nowhere to be found. The next year I returned for two weekends; each weekend I lost something minor but important, and searching did no good. I asked my HPS about it, and she suggested I take a few minutes to greet the spirits of that place and perhaps make offering to them. The next time I went, I followed her suggestion, leaving trinkets and colorful guitar picks I had collected just for the purpose. As I hid these items, I asked the Good People--I've heard they don't like to be called that F-word--not to take my musical equipment. Well, none of my stuff went missing, but during the parade, my instrument strap came untied, my boots came unlaced, and the scabbard I keep my fiddlestick in came loose. I looked like I was falling apart by the end of the short parade. So the next morning I respectfully asked that they leave *all* of my equipment alone. I had no equipment failures, but I did keep tripping--apparently over nothing. Since then, things seem to have settled down. I make offering to them every time I go. Occasionally, I'll have some bit of equipment fall off at the very end of the weekend, as though the Elven-Americans want to make sure I don't forget about them. So do I believe in the Good People? I sure act like I do. |

YES! Just because not everyone can see something does not mean it doesn't exhist. I have never seen a molicule or an atom, but I know they exhist. I have never seen faeries, but that doesn't mean other people haven't. If you don't believe something exhists, you'll never see it. |

Absolutely! I personally have never had a faery encounter (sadly), but that has not kept me from believing. I know trustworthy people who have had encounters, and how else would it be that so many people have had so similar experiences? Faeries may not show themselves to us all the time, but they're mischeivous little creatures who love to leave signs of themselves! |

No, I do not believe in Faeries. I also, don't believe in the sky, the moon, grass, or terrorism. Belief implies choice and to choose not to believe in what exists is denial or insanity. Faeries and other elementals may not be as easily spotted as many aspects of our life, but that doesn't mean I don't know that they are there. I know them by their history. I know them by the feeling I get when they are around - its the same feeling as when some one walks into a room behind me or when someone (particularly a loved one) comes into my home when I think I'm alone. I know them by the collective work we do on our local environment. I know them from their angry actions when I break a promise. In my youth I thought that they were archetypal figures useful in ritual and meditation. I was wrong. I work with them, honnor them, and (most of all) respect their privacy and community. |

Oh yeah! Though chemicals waft through the air more so, the faeries still dance around, playing pranks and running through gardens. I have an herb garden myself, and even here in busy Chicago it is overflowing with faeries. All times of year (except as soon as I return from a trip far away), I catch little peeks of them; but, whenever I'm away on vacation they commute to another garden somewhere. As soon as I get back into my system of watering and trimming my pretties, they come back and frolic once again! I suggest reading the children's novel, The Fairy Rebel by Lynne Reid Banks, an adorable little story of the mischeif and playfulness of the faeries. Blessed Be! |

I believe wholeheartedly in Faeries--they love to play little tricks on me, hiding and "borrowing" things all the time! Last Spring I left some honey outside for them...the next day I had a bulb on my front porch, that when planted, grew into the most lovely hyacinth...and don't forget the white lights I catch out of the corners of my eye... How sad the world would be if there were no Faeries, especially for children! |

Even though I have never actually "seen" or "visited" with a fairy, I most certainly believe in them. I think it started when I was about 8 and my cousin and I found a patch of four leaf clovers in my grandma's yard by the well. We picked a bunch of them and gave them to my mother for her birthday, and when we went back to show the grown-ups, they were gone. We looked and looked and never found any more. More recently, when I really started reading and learning about fairies, I started receiving "gifts" from the Fae. These gifts are things from nature that seem to be left just for me, in places they would not normally appear, usually right in front of my car door, a perfectly intact butterfly, a pine cone, a pretty feather. Outside my bedroom window, I had a great view of an empty lot where "fairy rings" grew quite frequently - perfect cicrles of toad stools. You may say maybe my perception is just different with the knowledge, but I prefer to believe that these things are just for me. I have invited the samll folk to take shelter in my yard and have tried to make it a pleasant place for them. This spring, I plan to plant a fairy garden for them... |

I have never had the pleasure of seeing a faery. Just as I have never had the pleasure of seeing a spirit/ghost. Just as I have never had the pleasure of speaking with an animal spirit/power animal/familiar. However, there have been numerous creditable individuals who have experienced one or all of these incredible gifts. If there is one thing I know, it is that this world is full of mystery. I can't dismiss an individuals experience. Just the same, I can't create an experience I never had. I am satisfied with saying that there are many mysterious and unknown forces at work in this universe we live in. We will never have full knowledge of the depth of life, we will never be the keepers of all knowledge...we will only be the receivers of what this Universe/God and Goddess wants to offer us...be it faeries, visions, or inspiration. |
