Question of the Week: 110 - 5/14/2003

What’s Your Favorite Element?

Do have a special affinity for one of the elements of Earth, Air, Water or Fire? Do you find one of these easier to work with than the others? Do ritual objects or other items associated with this element just seem to find their way to you?
On the flip side, do any of these elements – or what they represent – give you trouble? (For example: If you are drawn to the Fire principle, do you struggle with the emotional or spiritual aspects related to Water?) How do you balance out the elements within yourself? If you are ‘missing’ an element (or more than one) in your astrological chart (few or no Air, Water, Earth or Fire signs), do you consciously make an effort to enhance or strengthen the influence of that missing element(s) in some way?
What symbols, tools, animals, compass direction, emotions or spiritual guidance do you associate with the elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire? And what does Spirit represent or mean to you?

Though I am a Libra, an Air sign, my moon is in Capricorn, and the majority of planets in my birth chart are also in Earth signs. I have a couple of planets in Water, and only one in Fire. So, while I have a lot of traditionally Libran traits, my greatest affinity is with Earth. I loved playing in the dirt and mud when I was a child, and I've had a lifelong love of stones (and not just the pretty sparkly ones, either!) . People have told me that I have a tremendous serenity around me and that just being around me is soothing. Air would be the next greatest affinity. I love discussions of a philosophical nature, and I value intelligence and good ideas. I love windy days, and when a thunderstorm is about to come through I like to stand outside with my arms outstretched just when the wind is really starting to pick up and let the energy blow through me. Next would be Water. I like running streams and rushing rivers. I'm not an openly emotional person, but I feel things deeply, and I can empathize with most anything (but I'm not an empath) . Fire is my weakest Element. It takes a great deal to get me worked up. I'm not a particularly brave person, and one of the few things I get really passionate about is sex! ;-) If I didn't persist in having lots of candlelight when I do ritual, there'd be almost no Fire in my life at all. To me, Spirit is ephemeral yet complicated, an intricate melding of the other four elements that is so complex and intertwined that to even attempt to separate the strands would destroy the beauty of the whole. Spirit is the animator, the thing that is of the elements, but also what gives them their existence. It is life itself.

I'm a completely biased Goat here; My favorite element is Earth. I love just going for walks in the woods (usually to avoid school... *whistles innocently*) and trying to see if I can find anything unusual.

My favorite element is Fire. I am a leo with the sign of Fire, and in the Chinese zoaidc i'm dragon with element of Fire also. I'm pretty good with fire, making it burn and playing with the flame. =^_^= I Love Fire.

I guess I would have to say air (though I never really thought about it before) . I love the wind. I grew up in the Appalachain Mountains where it seems like the wind blows constantly.
Other than the fact that I'm a Gemini (which if memory serves is an air sign) I have no idea how this fits into my astrological chart.

Do have a special affinity for one of the elements of Earth, Air, Water or Fire?
Well, I am naturally drawn to water (ponds, creeks, rain storms) , so perhaps that's my special element. Also, I have practiced ritual next to water all of my life, ever since I was a little girl and would sneak out of the house in the very early morning in order to head down to the (prohibited) creek and burn candles, send up prayers to the Goddess, and make offerings to the spirits of the water. However, I also love air and fire. I feel like I am an "airy" personality. (Does that make sense?) Although I love the woods, gardening, etc., I find that I am less drawn to the element earth, for whatever reason. Still, I collect fossils, so I suppose earth elements do find their way to me!
I don't have any trouble working with any of the elements, I just prefer air and water . . . Really, I don't know that I even realized my preferences until I read this question! But I don't feel unbalanced or out of sync with any of the elements and I believe that they all have their spiritual place.
What symbols, tools, animals, compass direction, emotions or spiritual guidance do you associate with the elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire? Symbols:
Earth = An acorn; salt; a bowl of earth; the Green Man; a pinecone.
Air = Incense; a feather.
Fire = The sun/a symbol of the God; candle flame.
Water = a shell; a piece of driftwood; water from a creek or well (water that has recently touched the earth) ; a statue of the Goddess.
And what does Spirit represent or mean to you?
I'm not sure if I can explain what Spirit represents to me. I know that sounds especially trite coming from a writer. Still, I would have to describe Spirit as a feeling and a way of knowing . . . But what does it represent? A love of others and of Mother Nature, embracing inner and outer peacefulness, working toward love instead of hate, being generous, trying to control negative impulses and behavior (I have to keep reminding myself that it *is* a bad thing to flip off other drivers on the Interstate) . | Elements | May 14th. at 1:55:05 pm EDT |

Water is the deepest of all mysteries. I suppose its the curious aspect of my nature to know all the answers. That requires a very deep dive and what I have found is that there probably is no bottom. I am most drawn to water but find that I need the elements of fire and earth to balance out my tendency to get lost in the underworld. Air is always present and fuels my every expedition into the deep waters. When I work, I pay careful attention to the fire and earth elements and am always certain to approach my work with balance.

I always keep a balance between the Elements, as with the Goddess and God. I admit that I do occasionally feel drawn to one more than the others sometimes, but I still include them all, treat them equally and give them equal attention.
The only Element I don't often feel drawn to is Earth, mainly because I don't have any planets in any Earth signs. I don't feel a need to compensate though, as two important relationships in my life are Earth signs, my mother and husband. I'm very close to both of them and I believe this provides the balance with Earth that is otherwise missing.
As for representations, it depends really on time, relevance and location. I usually have incense or a feather for Air; a candle or flower for Fire; fresh rain water, water from a natural source or fruit juice for Water and salt, a crystal or a stone/pebble for Earth. As I am new to the Craft, I have not found any other correspondances for the Elements as yet - I usually focus on the spirit of each Element within myself instead; my breathing for Air, passionate feelings for Fire, tears and emotions for Water and my physical body for Earth.

Even though I am a Leo, I have trouble with Fire. I find it to be my most beneficial ally and my most dreaded foe. I use candles with almost every ritual and take every advantage to use my firepit when I can. But, sometimes that "fire in the belly" can give me trouble. I, on occassion, find myself spewing opinion or getting all fired up over nothing. And yet, that can be advantageous when you need it. My most comfortable element has to be Earth. I enjoy spending time just sitting in the grass and caressing the rocks around me. Maybe my comfort has to do with the fact I am a more logical thinker and more apt to weigh all decisions more than most. Maybe it's my focus on the more material and mundane things in life. Either way, I try to work on the elements I find myself having trouble with...and for some strange reason that changes often. But, Earth has always been a stable, solid elemental friend to me.

| AIR! | May 14th. at 1:16:34 pm EDT |

| Neko (Calgary, Canada) | Age: 21 - Email |

Ahhh.. the most ignored element. Very few people tell me they're air it seems and most claim to be either water or fire.
My starchart is completely air except for one lone Taurus in Venus. The rest is a mix of Gemini and Libra.
I'm obsessed with beginings and youth! It's where I connect most to the cycle of things. All my happiest memories are ones of warm bright mornings in the springtime where you can hear the birds and the sun is still golden. Things are just begining anew and being reborn. It was a time to read and study the world around me. A time to learn.
I can't wait to give these moments to my children as well.

| I Swear I'm Trying To Stay Balanced | May 14th. at 12:43:37 pm EDT |

| Bran Rivka (Minnesota) | Age: 24 - Email |

I try to keep the Elements balanced. Honest. But I am often drawn to Fire. Probably because I'm an Earth person by nature, & Fire balances that very well in energy work. Fire & I also have a fun/screwed-up relationship that draws me to it. As a writer I'm also connected to Air & its association with communication, & these are the 'tools' that most often find me. My spiritual *practice* is most based in Earth - trance dancing & long walks in Nature rather than quiet meditation.
My 'weak' Element is Water. I'm not a very emotional person (more given to theatrical histrionics than actual feeling, & my most easily roused emotion is anger, very Fiery) . But sometimes, for no discernible reason, I'll just burst into tears. That's Water, telling me to pay attention.
My associations for the elements tend to be either bodily (breath for Air, blood for Fire, tears for Water, bone for Earth) or musical (woodwinds for Air, brass for Fire, strings for Water, percussion for Earth) . I have spirit allies in each direction, each one very much in keeping with the Elements, & I can't think of any Element without thinking of its ally.
Spirit...Spirit is alchemy. It is the place where all Elements meet & create something so much greater. The Ancestors called it the Quintessence; what it really is remains one of the ultimate unknowables, but at the same time, it is that thing we each carry with us that makes us what we are, & more than what we are, & connected to each other, the Elements, and the ever-growing Multiverse.
*grumbling* Oh, well, if *that's* all it is...no problem! That makes *perfect* sense.
In balance, Bran Rivka

| Two.....depending On Your Definition | May 14th. at 12:13:24 pm EDT |

Water, and Fire. I am a water sign, and I am drawn to it's aspect of ruler of death, and also the fact that it represents blood, so vital to life. It has amazing and wonderful duality. Fire because of the same principles: we need warmth and cooked food, but it can be quite deadly as well; not to mention it is the complimentary and balancing element to my birthsign. I find the phoenix represents me as well, dying and being reborn of the ashes....death and birth and life-in-death. Wonderful paradox. Some might consider a third element, Air, for me; I am very attuned to Faery (or so they say I'd like to think) . Some associate faerys with Air, but I feel they are more in a class of their own, since not all faerys reside or work in/with air.
Though I feel neither Air nor Earth are strongly present in me, (though I could be wrong) , I also do not think they are working against me, nor do I feel a need to bolster their presence; if it was necessary for me to have them, I think I would be there, without me having to try to get them to be present.
Spirit, to me, is far too complex to be explained away in just one quick go. It is, IMHO, in a class the same as if all 4 others were balled into one class; it has many different facets to be worked on and worked with.
Blessings in Darkness, Lady Gaia NiCiamahra
