Rowan Snapdragon

I have been putting this off for a couple of weeks because this has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do. A friend has been lost and the world will miss his brilliance and caring. Many people will never get to know Rowan Snapdragon and that is a loss that cannot be imagined but is felt so much by those who knew and loved him!
I 'met' him in early November. He wrote an essay on Witchvox and I read it, not really understanding it as it was very technical. But there was something about his photo that compelled me to e-mail him. His eyes drew me in and told me I had to contact this man. (see his many poems and articles)
I usually will only reply to essays that I connect with in some way, so this was unusual for me to just write and say 'hi'. I did, not expecting much of a reply if anything at all, but got a really looong one instead!
We hit it off instantly and as we talked, we both felt a connection and a strong feeling that we have known each other in another lifetime! We lived over 1400 miles apart, but each e-mail and phone call brought us closer together and we became very good friends.
He wrote a poem about me entitled "Ozark" and I wrote one about him called "Mystery Man" which we both published in our profiles. He was an avid poet and articulate writer, but most importantly, he was studying to be a doctor of natural medicine!
He could read with lightning speed and retain the information. He was 6 months shy of getting his bachelors degree and had a 4.0 GPA. He had been also accepted to do independent study for his masters which meant he could go anywhere he wanted to study and was thinking of coming up here to the Ozarks where I live and where his roots originally came from, to study in the peace and greenery of this lovely area.
Unfortunately, Rowan had been battling cancer for the last five years. It took his pancreas and his gall bladder. It took various parts of his abdomen too, but it never took his spirit or his compassion for life and the people in it.
He loved everyone unconditionally and talked about starting a group of people who could show people how to love one another unconditionally, without sex, without bias or hated for another's religion, color, or sexual orientation, just love! He so looked forward to being a doctor and curing people with the gifts of Mother Earth, but the cancer took him away.
I flew down to Florida on March 6th. I had to meet this man in person before he died. He was on hospice care and excited about the prospect of my arrival. I just wanted to touch the face of the man who touched my life so deeply in such a short time. I got my wish, and he got his, and we got to hold each other’s hand.
I spent a couple of hours in his room but it was getting late so I bent over and gave him a kiss on his forehead, told him I loved him and that I would be back the next day. He passed away five hours later.
Everyone in the room said he was hanging on just to be able to see me. I know he wasn't feeling any pain and I'm glad for the opportunity to give everyone who loved him so much a few more days to spend with him.
He was truly a beautiful person and that showed even though his body was emaciated and jaundiced. His love and beauty radiated through that whole room and through the people who cared for him.
He will be terribly missed and always loved!
In memory of a great Witch, Rowan Snapdragon (12-9-64 to 3-7-07)
I walk all around the jagged borders of this tiny town
with a heart that dreams to escape over the ridge
beyond rusty trailers and past the tracks
where woods grow wild and children tell each other stories after dark.
(Meets and Bounds, Rowan Snapdragon)
