WebMaster Notes - Our First Month Online
by Witchvox Central
Bright Blessings Witches of The World,
Welcome once again to the Witches' Voice... Let me start by thanking you all for enabling us to have an incredible first month on the Web. It was wonderful to align with old friends and to meet so many new ones. Our goal was simply to start off slow and build our financial balance in order to keep this web site up and to help Witches that need legal financial assistance. In our first month on the Web with the WLPA we rendered 1672 hits and gradually built it up to just under 60, 000 hits for the month of December.
And What a month it was ! In early February our promotions coordinator (the beautiful Lady Alexcia) listed us on most of the search engines of the internet (they get 10's of thousands of postings a day). Somehow, someone, somewhere (we love you and we thank you) at these search engines decided that we were worth featuring. The action we had (51, 000 hits or pages loaded) was beyond our wildest projections. Over half of the hits came in the 6 days of the month, thanks to what appears to be a gift from the Goddess. Internet magazine's "Top Ten of the Web" page, Yahoo's "Pick of the week" and Netscape's "What's New" all listed us in their top ten on or about February 24th. Simply stated you can not beg or buy this kind of promotion.

Web Notes 3/2/97
Busy is good for our mission statement but a quick road to disaster for Wren and I financially. With only 6 paid sponsors, an opening balance of negative $1, 000 (legal and domain registration /start up fees) and substantial phone/internet charges we simply cannot afford to be this busy this quickly with out help. We had so much "Hit Action" that we may be out of business and quick. We learned this big time during our tenure at the WLPA. Allow me to explain. Most internet providers charge their customers based on usage and if your site get a few thousand hits a month you may never know or care about this "ala carte item". Here's how it works: Every time you load a page in your Web browser you are literally downloading ALL the elements (text & images) of that page directly to the cache folder on YOUR hard drive so you can view the page on your browser. To put this into perspective; If you were to look at (i.e. download) every page on our web site you would generate 6.5 meg of usage charges at our end. Since we have 115 pages it is rare that the average surfer would "hit" more than a handful of pages in any given session. However when thousands of people look at a handful of pages on each visit things change dramatically. The first "gig" is free and all dowloads beyond that are an additional charge. We don't have the usage charges from February from our server as of this posting but the bottom line is that it will cost us plenty for the action we received in our first month.
What drives us?: In order to do the best job we can and most importantly to fulfill our mission statement of education, the latest news and general awareness of Witchcraft we are constantly asking ourselves the following questions:
- Who comes here, how often and what do they look at ?: This one is easy. Since day one we have analyzed just what pages are of interest and how often they are hit. There are invisible hit counters on every page on the site (if you see a stray "." on one of our pages that's them - a graphic that is 1 pixel wide by 1 pixel tall). Every morning at 6 am we capture the counter information from the day before and toss it into Microsoft Excel to properly profile and analyze the information.
- Why does anyone care about us and how did they find us?: These are classic marketing questions and much tougher to quantify. We gather this information from various sources like email, the live feedback forum and as of last week from our new Tell us about yourself form... Check it out and tell us what you'd like to see. Your projection is our command.
Web Site Link Exchange: We of the Witches' Voice welcome links with any Witch/Pagan related Web site... We have an easy submission form on our Witch/Pagan Web Sites Page. If you would like to list us on your site, we would love it if you could use one of our graphics to enhance the link. On Feb 24th we changed the submission form so that it writes directly to our Web Link database.
Navigating this Web Site: Quite simple really... When in doubt simply click on one of the graphics on the header of the page... The Witches' Voice on the Web consists of 3 levels and by simply clicking on any image at the top of page you can go backwards one level. The basic Site structure is as follows...
Click on any header to move back one level. Just about all the Graphics on this Web site are an email/hot link.
- 1 Home Page/Master Index (http://www.witchvox.com)
- 10 Sub-indexes or sections
- 94+ Content pages linked from the sub-indexes.
In conclusion... Thank you all for an incredible opening month and do know that we have a plethura of plans for the next couple of weeks... Including many new pages and the polishing and updating of many that are already up. Feel free to check the Home page and the sub-indexes for the absolute lastest info on victories, protests and networking related the modern Witch community. We CAN do this... but only with you
Blessed Be Well!
