A PumkinHead in the White House

by Wren

I was sitting here this morning listening to XTC when it hit me. A few lines from the "Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" by Andy Partridge refused to leave my mind. As I hummed them under my breath, I finally got it. The reason that the Republicans hate Bill Clinton so much.

Energized by the impeachment win in the House yesterday, the Christian Coalition already has plans in the works to blanket the country with pro-resignation fliers and phone calls to the Senators who hold Clinton's eventual fate in their hands. Why are they so vehement-even nasty-when it comes to this particular President?

In fact, Bill Clinton should be their darling boy. (Well, as much as any Democrat could ever be a staunch Republican's poster child, anyway.) Clinton isn't one of those damned liberals after all.. He is a moderate who has voted for many of the things that allow Republicans to sleep all warm and cozy in their Lucy/Desi-esque properly chaste twin beds at night.*

Bill Clinton voted for increased police support, anti-street crime measures and has even gone so far as to bomb a non-Christian nation for them. So what gives?

In the words of "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" perhaps lies at least a partial answer.**

Peter comes to town preaching acceptance, love and toleration. ("Any kind of love is alright.") But he ends up being tied to a chunk of wood in a very archetypal manner. No big surprise. It's happened before. And by the same sort of people, too.

One of Bill Clinton's big 'offenses" is that the Republicans can't beat him in a fair fight. Clinton has covered himself by promoting just about every cause popular with the majority of the American people-education, health care reform, equal rights and good financial management. And although no one would ever accuse Al Gore of abusing his natural animal magnetism to unfair advantage, Clinton's V.P. has nevertheless covered the environmental angle.

What the Republicans really can't stand about Bill Clinton is that he-much more than they-is someone that we can identify with.

Clinton isn't out there preaching that only certain types of love are acceptable. He isn't bemoaning what is wrong with our nation, but constantly emphasizing what is right with it. Clinton is not a gloom and doom kind of guy waiting for an imaginary apocalypse to free us from this evil world. Clinton prefers to see the good in people rather than the worst. The President is an almost idealized concept of an optimist who believes that as long as we are here, we might as well try to make it the best world that we can.

Most of us appreciate that. Because in the end, we, too, would like to believe that we are people who-though we are often flawed and all too human- struggle each day to make the world a little better than how we found it.

Clinton just seems more like one of us. He actually has facial expressions. He plays the sax. He eats at fast food restaurants and struggles with weight gain as a result. He gets all red in the face as he jogs around the block. He even makes bad choices when it comes to picking out which tie to wear for the cameras.

I don't think anyone would call him a saint. And that is the number one reason that the Republicans hate him so very much. He isn't a saint at all. Neither are we.

As Andy points out in the song, "He made too many enemies... Of the people who would keep us on our knees.."

And all the while that the Christian Coalition driven lemmings in our government have been harping on the fact that only a saint can run this country effectively, Bill Clinton has been proving them wrong.

And the Righteous Republicans really, really hate that.

*-For those of another generation, tv shows in the "old days" protected the morals of the viewing public by not showing married couples actually sleeping in the same bed.

** Lyrics to "The Ballad of Peter Pumkinhead" by Andy Partridge:(From the CD "Nonsuch" by the band XTC (c) 1992)

    Peter Pumpkinhead came to town,
    Spreading wisdom and cash around,
Fed the starving and housed the poor,
Showed the Vatican what gold is for...

But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees.
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin!
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?

    Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all
    Emptied churches and shopping malls.
Where he spoke, it would raise the roof.
    Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth.

    Peter Pumpkinhead put to shame
Governments who would slur his name.
Plots and sex scandals failed outright.
    Peter merely said,
"Any kind of love is alright!"

    Peter Pumpkinhead was too good
Had him nailed to a chunk of wood.
He died grinning on live TV,
Hanging there he looked a lot like you...

And an awful lot like me!

But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees.
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin!
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin!
