Sirius Rising 99
by Don Waterhawk
After the long drive from Florida, then to Ohio, then to New York... we finally pulled into the Brushwood Folklore Center outside of Sherman, New York with a big "Whew"!... We made it.., got out of the van with Kokopelli and was greeted by Theresa and Darlene Barney (owners..with Frank) of Brushwood, with warm hugs and words of missing... "Where's Frank?", ..sitting on top of the pool house where no one could get to him. (we all need time off). We said our hello's and was reminded that it would soon be dark. We drove down to the field to come out to the beginning of "Festival City". There appeared to be about 400 hundred people already camped, sliding into Sirus Rising Festival. We camped in our usual spot, the Bermuda Triangle, (yes, there are tales of people not coming back). Sirius started with spark and fanned quickly into a fire.
The first night there was a little chilly, but that made you get down to the roundhouse for the first drumming. And the drumming was very, very sweet. The Magik of the circle building each night, as the drummers found their place within the fire circle. These are the Sirius Drummers. Billy Woods, Joshua, and Saphyre (Seeds of Time), Winnie Korup, Rhapeal, and... and... and. The drumming at Sirius, both night and day drumming, is undoubtedly the best in the country. More than one night had people running to get their tape recorders to try and capture the magik of the fire circle. I thank all the Drummers, Dancers, and Firekeepers for the experience that the people received for Sirius.
It is good to see Tradition being renewed again. Another new Clan being born, new ways and old ways coming together and forming a new Tradition. I'm talking about the Firekeepers of Brushwood. The people who work long hours to provide the nightly fire and the upkeep of the circle. One day I was at the Roundhouse and I saw about six fire keepers (they wear red suspenders) walking around the fire pit they had just built. They were walking sunwise, looking down. Everynow and then I would see one bend down and pick up a stone or twig from the dancing area. Now... I have never seen that done before in the years of drumming and dancing. And what a wonderful sight it was... to care that much for the santicy and sacredness of the Circle. To name all the things that this Clan does for the community would be lengthly. Watch them sometimes... Oh yeah, thank them also. They also brought into the clan, young Frankie Dalton, as an apprentice, to learn the ways of the Firekeepers. Is this new Clan providing, with new traditions, a rite of passage for our young elders? Thank you Jason, you are a start for the next Seven Generations.
Sirius is so laid back, the energy of the people, the wonderful learning provided by top Teachers for workshops. Gavin and Yvonne Frost (she's a babe), Isaac Bonewits, Merlin Wisdor, Billy Woods, Alex Wedmedyk, Peg Aloi, and ... and... and... ..Its so interesting, so refreshing, to have this caliber of workshop presenters come together.
Entertainment...? Ever hear the Rock band "Woven Dreams". A group of young elders that rocked the night away. Billy Woods....we all talk about master drummers, but never really get the chance to see one work the magik. Well...Billy Woods does, and he does it well. If one ever gets the chance to drum with this man....you will see the true magik of the drum come out. To get a full count of the entertainment, go to http://www.brushwood.com and check it out.
Once again Roy had planted Tobacco plants on the field. And once again the Tobacco ritual was initiated and completed. It was so much fun seeing the people tending to the plants, talking to the little ones, making stone circle around each plant and taking the time to focus on the gratitude of what we have all received in the last year. Thank you again Roy for the time involved and the consideration of the Standing Ones. We are so honored....
So, for those who have never been to Sirius Rising. I would say it is a must..getting better and bigger each year, bringing people closer to each other...and the time to do the real magik and Medicine we so want to do. So once again I thank Frank,Darlene, and Theresa for the time and effort in making Sirius Rising a wonderful festival to go to. Wah Do!
