It Is Your Destiny

by Wren

January naturally leads to reflection here in the Northern Hemisphere. The days are shorter, the weather is colder and the urge to snuggle up throws itself over us like a cozy blanket. We often find our thoughts wandering on such days. As the minutes tick by, we drift out of our chairs in front of the television sets and begin to wander past the reality checkpoint of the person we are now into the realms of the person that we thought we might be. To cut through all of the flowery language: we tend to think a lot. And it was while I was in one of those states of reverie that I found myself musing over a simple four-line verse from the Upanishads:
You are what your deep driving desire is.
As your desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny.
You are what your deep driving desire is. So what is YOUR deep driving desire? Have you ever asked yourself this question? The answer may not be as easy to articulate as you might first think. Often one's 'deep driving desire' is to be someone special, to make a mark upon the world, to be remembered as someone who has accomplished something important. But would you be comfortable relating such seemingly grandiose desires to the other people around you? Not only would the average person feel very uncomfortable about saying something like that right out loud, we often stifle such ideas even as they arise in our private thoughts. We've been conditioned to be self-effacing, modest and disparaging of not only our aspirations, but also about our real accomplishments. And because we have mixed feelings about words such as 'desire' and 'power', it is hard to think about such terms without wondering if one is sinking into some sort of social psychosis.

And as we reread these four lines, it is easy to see how that danger might indeed become a reality for a person afflicted with a mental or emotional illness. Certainly some religious systems play up those fears of insanity in order to channel 'desires' into the approved venues of the religious dogma. It can thus become a 'sin' to think of oneself as 'special' or capable of accomplishing great things. Such 'legalities' keep people in line, which is, of course one of the most important functions of all religious dogma. Frustrating as it must be for the powers-that-wanna-be though, deep driving desires are not so easily contained. It is indeed fortunate for the human race that they are not.

You ARE what your deep driving desire is. It defines your personality. More importantly, it uncovers your potential. For what we deeply care about we are motivated to see accomplished. People who find that their desire is to eliminate poverty or prevent animal abuse for instance will become involved in civil action or social programs. Someone who has a deep spiritual nature will find ways to express that in their own life and may go on to teach, instruct and guide others to such enlightenment. We often envy those who seem to know at an early age what their mission in this life is. Many more of us struggle for years trying to find our place in the grand scheme of things. Where do we begin to look?

Sometimes when we hear a story or watch a television program or read a book or listen to someone speak, something wells up inside of us that we can't really explain. That is your first clue. Follow that feeling and see where it leads. If people continually say to you that you are a good writer or a compassionate person or a beautiful spirit, think about it and don't just pooh-pooh it away. You became one of those things because your deep driving desire was to BE one of those things. Maybe you just never recognized it as such before. Now that you do, you can go on to perfect those talents and follow your dream.

As difficult as discovering, uncovering or admitting to having a deep driving desire for something may be, the next step can be even more daunting:

As your desire is, so is your will. Yep! You actually have to put that feeling and desire into action. Not when you win the lottery, not when it is safe to put your toe in the water, but right now. For a desire without action is but a pipedream. What you envision in the future will never happen unless you put your will, your energy, behind it. Your kite will not fly unless you take hold of the string and start to run. Rather than imagine that the world would be a better place if only such-and-such happened, get out there and do the such-and-such. Wishing is not willing. Dreaming is not willing. Will is taking your wish, your dream and your deep driving desire and putting it into action. Many Pagans have trouble in spell work when they encounter some ambiguity over intention. My advice? Go back to step one and uncover what your deep driving desire is. Follow that.

As your will is, so is your deed. What our deep driving desire has empowered our will to put into action becomes our deed. A deed is something already accomplished. Here it is. We did it. It is the punctuation mark at the end of our sentence. Our desire and our will has now become something tangible. It has become a manifestation of all of those things that we have thought about while whiling away the minutes in our chairs. Our intention (desire) has gotten its wish because it had the breath (will) to blow out the candles on the cake (deed). Sometimes we don't get them all in the first try. That's okay. Keep blowing. If one has the desire and the will, nothing can stand in the way of the deed becoming manifest. And when in doubt about whether you are still on the right path? You got it: Go back to step one!

As your deed is, so is your destiny. I certainly never set out to be a 'professional' writer or a social and political activist. But early on, I recognized that deep within me burned a desire to help people. As a child, I would stand up to the bullies in the neighborhood when they were picking on the smaller or 'different' kids. I didn't punch them. I reasoned with them in terms that they could understand. Sometimes that even worked. More often, I got beat up, too. But whether I won the bullies over by reason or whether I got pounded on, at the end of the day, I always felt good (Well, except for that Bactine part) because I had stood up for what I thought was right.

And you know, a funny thing happens when you do that. When you start acting upon that which your deep driving desire inspires you to do, you will often find that the universe begins to move in your direction. I 'found' myself in the right place at the right time on more than one occasion. Through just such a 'chance' meeting, I was introduced to Fritz who also 'by chance' was on the path forged from his own driving desire to help someone. Neither one of us had the smallest inkling as to where that chance meeting would eventually lead us. But we shared a common desire, a common vision and were willing to work hard to transform that desire and vision into deed.

To say that this was our destiny... Well, even after admonishing you to claim your own right to become great, I just can't go there...and yet...and yet...Here we are doing what we always dreamed of doing; doing what we love to do; doing that which we trust will make a difference even if it is for just one person. We didn't simply wake up one day and find this all in place. But we did, I believe, wake up each day with a driving desire to help someone burning within our hearts. And we still do.

Our story is not all that unique. We have heard it over and over again from many other people. Many of you have read similar stories right here on this web site. Many of you here ARE the stories. I am convinced that everyone has a story to tell. And I believe that it is important that each and every one of these stories be told. And I trust that in some small way, reading the words on this page will encourage you to believe that there is a deep driving desire that also burns within you.

Find it. Fan it. Fan your own deep, driving and burning desire until it will not let you rest. Then go out and turn it into action. Follow where the path leads you and never look back. Be special. You can do it. You can make a difference. Your destiny already lives within that one small and perhaps hesitant step that you dare to take today.

And you never know... So might the destiny of our one trembling and yet still hopeful world.

Walk in Love and Light,
