Mabon - Boyd Hill ESA

by Ann Marie

Tonight reminded me of preparing for a date with a very special lover. The ground was barely damp from our seasonal shower of afternoon rains; the scent of night blooming Jasmine lingered softly on the breeze. The Park had a verdant glow, as a maiden dressed in her finest gown. GreenSong Grove had returned to Boyd Hill ESA for Mabon Sabbat. Some of us heard the land whisper, "Welcome home, " and most of us felt the welcome. The alligators in the pond at Osprey's Roost, Wally and Wallette, barked a greeting, and we all kept a respectable distance form their pond as we observed that their summer fishing had made them plump and at least a foot bigger. Our summer sabbats are held at alternative locations due to the children's summer programs at Boyd Hill, so Mabon for the members and friends of GreenSong Grove is truly a time of thanksgiving, and homecoming.

Joyful greetings of Merry Meet and hugs were heard as more people arrived for the evening ritual. The feasting table was laden with marvelous dishes. In the fire circle the group responsible for the ritual, Coven of the Quill, Sword and Chalice, were putting last minute touches on their beautiful harvest altar.

The last of the cars drove through the gates and we were all summoned to the ritual procession. Tiki Torches illuminated the path. We were anointed, asked to take a handful of seeds, and ushered into the circle. There was a spiral of luminaria in the center of the circle and a Throne for the Harvest King.

An explanation of the sabbat was given and we were all asked to charge the seeds with wishes and hopes for the coming months. We processed in a spiral dance to give the seeds to the Harvest king. It was lovely to see almost a hundred people do a spiral dance. The King was summoned back to the Altar and asked if he was willing to give his life to the land and his people. The group surrounded and supported their King as he fell slain to the earth. He was carried to the center and placed on a funeral pyre. As the new King lit the fire he removed his black hood and we could see it was the twin of the slain King. Yes, it was a wicker effigy that was burned, but that did not stop one little girl from asking her Mommy if the man was hurt when he was scarified. Following cakes and ale the child was brought to the altar to talk to the harvest King and the myth was explained to her in terms she could understand.

As the last of the Wicker man burned, The Harvest Moon rose above the tree line and lit up the circle. It reminded me of Mom turning on the porch light if you linger to long at the front door with your date.

Following ritual, we all feasted and talked about the upcoming festival season. Everyone in GSG is looking forward to the upcoming mini festival October 26-27; this will be the fourth one we have shared at Boyd Hill. Two weeks later we return for Florida Pagan Gathering on November 7-8. Our sweet lady, Boyd Hill, will not be lonely for Pagan company this harvest season.
