Starwood 2003 (2)

So here's Saturday, and the Sun came up...well....it wasn't raining, and the Sun did burst out heating up the ....yup you guessed it, the mud. Know what happened to the stomped in, trudged through and drove over mud? It started to give off a peculiar smell, or stink shall we say when the Sun heated it up to dry stage. Where will this end you ask, wellllll, after the 45 workshops, "4" concerts, 2 rituals, and a whole lot of hanging clothes out to dry throughout the field. The roads and fields actually started drying out....yeah right! People came out in droves, looking up for the first time in days without fear of drowning like a turkey. The Children's parade was once again a big hit, notice I said 'Children's" Parade, yeah right, seems like the "adults" outnumbered the children, and were having just as much fun, if not more.

I want to thank the Drummers of Starwood, there was a Tribute to Olatunji with Muruga,Sikuru and Badal Roy, awesome! ACE is sponsoring another festival on Sept. 19 - 21, 2003 at Brushwood called Spirit Drum Festival. The same drummers that performed at the tribute at Starwood will be performing at the Spirit Drum Fest and plus many more. Visit ACE's website to find out more about it. And to Alex and my "Wolf Clan Sister" Joy, Thanks for keeping the people tuned into the sounds and magick of the drums throughout the day. Lots of great drumming happened at the Earth Rhythm booth. That's another thing that Starwood is "Famous For", Drumming... I won't bother telling you about it, I could never do it justice, ya gotta come to Starwood. Baka Beyond band members plugged right in with the jamming. Not a usual occurrence with the headliner band. Thank you for making so many shake, rattle and roll. And, ahem.., to the person(s) that liked to play the big bass drum at the round house, in the early morning.., take lessons, you are embarrassing yourselves..!

The Starwood Elders had an induction Ritual, another group of Initiates were brought into the Clan, the "Tribe" gels even more. Thank you Skip (and others) for making that happen. So, Daniella, Tia and myself went up in the afternoon to get something to eat and found a group of young musicians playing at the Blue Lady Cafe. And playing there, unscheduled, was the "One Hat Band", a party of seven individuals playing a variety of instruments and Rockin....I mean ROCKIN, big damn letters, shout it out, boogie with your booty ROCKIN!!! Sounds that were a cross of Classical and wiccabilly with a comedic slide....oh yeah!!!. Now I have heard some of these people play in other bands, throughout the years, but this was the really first get down and get personal concert that I had been a part of with them. And it was a street performance, just popped up and give to the people stuff. Thank you people of "One Hat Band", you made a lot of peoples day, including ours.

Evening was slipping up on us, the Java Junction started getting long lines as people began waking up and drinking coffee, after all, tonight was the Big night, the big bonfire that Starwood is so famous for. Remember in the Sirius Rising review, I stated that the bonfire's for both festivals had already been built? Well, I was wrong about Starwoods bonfire a bit. I watched them work all day to ready it... So to you FIRETRIBE!...I bestow and share from my heart, Gratitude for all the work that your Clan does for the people. The community really doesn't have a clue as to what you all do as a gift to the people....I do....and soon it will be time to tell them!:) To the Rowan Clan, thank you for what you, Gene and Linda, have done for the people, they have become better for it. And of course, thank you Darlene, Frank, Theresa and David and the Brushwood staff (just how many cars did you pull out of the mud?) Once again to the Dalton family, thank you for all you do for the people, and you people work to damn much... and have you found my spider yet?

So Saturday night came, Bonfire Dancers had been practicing throughout the week in preparation for this night. The Torchbearers had their Starwood Torches blessed by Lady Elsbeth during the Blessing Ritual. The band Baka Beyond performed, whipping up the energy for what lay ahead. And the procession then came over the hill like a rolling mist to the Bonfire area. The drummers drummed, the dancers danced, the torchbearers lit the Fire, the Firetribe blew the Magicine and it Flamed like only a Starwood Fire can. They say that there are 200 to 300 people that come in for the weekend just to see this night's sight. And I can understand why. Seems everyone had cameras out taking pictures of this magnificent Fire as it burned hundreds of feet into the nights sky. Sparks flying, stilt people walking, dancers twirling and over a 1700 people trudged around the fire... yes...trudged...what ever happened to that high energy, make ya wanna dance stuff? Don't know, but they trudged, but thats okay, I grabbed Daniella's and Tias hand, and we skipped, and twirled, and danced and caught up with others doing the same...and...you know what, Starwood is what you make of it... and it can be a blast!

Despite the rain and the mud, we had a great time doing fun things with a bunch of wonderful people. Friends whom we see but once a year. We will be there again, and so will many others. Thank you "Land" for allowing us two legged's to gather, we do it to become better people.

In the Realm of the Sacred Circle,
Don and Daniella WaterHawk....oh yeah Elf!
