Update on Skye

by Wren

First of all, thank you so very much to all of the kind folks who emailed me with your best wishes and with your offers/intentions to conduct healing rituals on Skye's behalf. We all appreciate this more than words can say. And thank you in abundance to those of you who sent some funds to help with the cost of the chemo treatments. These have been forwarded to Skye along with your address and I am sure when she feels better, Skye will thank you personally as well. Your kindness has been the only light in this situation thus far.
Skye still hasn't been able to find any assistance with the 20% of the bill for the chemo drugs that Medicare doesn't cover as yet. The drug company that manufactures Temador does have a program, but only for those who have no public or private insurance at all. The Social Security Dept. has been no help. There are Medi-gap policies through state and private insurance programs, but the wait for prescription drugs coverage for pre-existing conditions is 6-12 months and the premium would be about $500-600 per month. While that is still cheaper than the $900, per month that she has to pay out-of-pocket for the drugs, she hasn't been able to locate a program that will accept her.
What we thought was a $2000. a month treatment bill is now an over $4000. a month bill. The first dose, it turned out, was only half of what she needs to take every month for possibly the next two years. (The hospital wanted to see how well she would tolerate the drug before setting her up on a full dose.)
Skye is scheduled to have the gamma knife surgery on October 16th at around one in the afternoon at Mass. General. It is an outpatient procedure. Your thoughts and prayers on that day would be very much appreciated.
Right now she is tired and depressed and totally stressed out. If you know of any programs that might help her or simply want to send a card to help cheer her up, you can write to her at:
Vanessa 'Skye' Landry P.O. Box 1326 Ashland, N.H. 03217
And if you are so inclined, a letter to your Congressmen/women urging them to do the right thing concerning a prescription drug program (BTW, both the House and Senate versions actually cut a hefty portion out of the current Medicare funding for cancer drugs) might eventually be helpful for Skye and the people like her (and who are not all seniors) who are struggling with the catastrophic costs of prescription drugs in the U.S.
Again, thank you for your love and concern and compassion. May your Gods bless you for your kindness.
