How Can You help?
If you want to write letters supporting the three incarcerated young men, or contribute money to help fund their appeals, or, most important of all, contact the Arkansas officials involved with this case, there are a number of resources available. Time is of the essence here, and your efforts will make a difference.
I met some local college students at the recent premiere of Paradise Lost at the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge, MA. They were passing out information packets on The West Memphis Three Support Fund. I had the chance to hang out with them while interviewing Bruce Sinofsky, one of the filmmakers, who had met them when they came to New York a week earlier, for the film's Manhattan premiere.
The primary concern of the Witches' Voice as regards this case is to see that justice is served. Anyone who has seen the film is bound to agree that, all other matters aside, the criminal investigation and trial were not conducted fairly or competently. If a second trial finds these young men guilty, at least the sensationalism, bungling and corruption that characterized the first trial will have been addressed. But it is our wish that the true killer or killers of the young boys is apprehended; and after seeing the documentary several times, reading accompanying documents on the case, and speaking at length with one of the filmmakers, I believe intellectually and know intuitively that the wrong people are in jail for these crimes.
Damien Echols is currently on Death Row in Tucker, AR. His first of appeals will be held sometime in October. while being incarcerated, he has filed numerous lawsuits with the DOC for unlawful treatment and violation of religious practices. Damien spends most of his time reading and corresponding to friends and family. If you are interested in writing him, you may do so at:
Damien Echols SK 931 2501 State Farm Road Tucker, AR 72168
Jason Baldwin is currently serving a life sentence at the Arkansas Department of Corrections facility at Grady, AR. Jason's appeal will also be addressed sometime in October. Jason currently works in the kitchen of the prison in the bakery section. If you would like to write to him, you may do so at:
C. Jason Baldwin #103335 Grimes Unit Wackenhut Way Newport, AR 72112
Jessie Misskelley, Jr. is currently serving a life sentence at the Arkansas Department of Corrections facility at Grady, AR. Jessie's initial appeal in regard to his confession was heard in April and denied by the Arkansas Supreme Court. The court acknowledged the fact that the police handled the procedure of getting the confession in a questionable fashion. However, they let the sentence stand and denied his appeal. Jessie currently works in the prison on cleaning detail. You can write him at:
Jessie Misskelley c/o Dan T. Stidham
Those interested in a letter writing campaign may address issues with the following Arkansas officials:
Arkansas Attorney General Honorable Winston Bryant 200 Tower Building 4th and Center Little Rock, AR 72201 (501) 682-2007
Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee State Capitol Little Rock, AR 72201 (501) 682-2345
Arkansas Supreme Court Any of the following Judges: Robert Brown, Don Corbin, Robert Dudley, Tom Glaze, Jack Holt, Jr., David Newburn, Andrea Layton Roaf (be sure to put Honorable before the name) Associate Justice Justice Building Little Rock, AR 72201
A good way to introduce the letter would be:
Dear Governor,
I believe a great injustice has been committed in the case of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. I feel that the movie "Paradise Lost" brought out some important points that should be addressed. I would appreciate any action by your office that would investigate and research the cases in question. It is sad to think that an injustice of this nature can happen in the United States.
Respectfully,
Your Name
If you can refer to specific examples of the film (such as the knife given by Mark Byers to the filmmakers which had blood on it, or the obvious coercion of Jessie's confession, or the media's treatment of the case before the jury was selected, such that a jury could not have remained unbiased going into the courtroom); then do so; it will help make your letter stand out and make it clear that a wide variety of individuals are concerned about this case.
The more letters received, the greater the impact. When the appeal is heard, the amount of mail received will definitely have an effect; these officials will know that the world is watching, and expects justice to be done.
Please write as soon as you can!!! A handwritten letter is fine .
