Sun Stave Circle Beltane

by Rev. Heron, MTR

If I had a dollar for every time I have heard the question "Are there really Pagans in Utah?" then I'd be a happy witch. The answer, of course, is YES, and today over 115 of us celebrated Beltane! We arrived at high noon at the Riverton Homestead where our gracious host and hostess had thoughtfully posted a ren-fair style pole flag with the word Beltane painted on it.
Making our way to the back of the house, we were greeted with a huge, luscious expanse of two acres of green grass with the 16 foot Maypole erected at one end. Everyone was busy laying out picnic blankets, getting chairs set up, and relaxing a bit before we got started.
There was some excitement around a small table near the food tents, the Church of the Sacred Circle had brought some beautiful themed baskets of goodies to raffle as a fund-raiser for their Sacred Earth Fund. We bought a few tickets and kissed them for good luck. (I wanted to win the Ritual Bath basket, but my husband Sean was secretly hoping for the Massage basket, I am sure!)
It was a gorgeous warm day, with blue skies and the mountains looming close in the clear air. We spent some time chatting with friends and then the announcement came to gather for circle! We passed the Bel-fire at the entrance to circle and then it was time for a powerful druidic Elemental and Spirit calling in Gaelic by our host. Small squares of green paper held our wishes and were burned in the Bel-fire while we were preparing for the Maypole dance.
Over 100 multi-colored ribbons were tied to the wreath atop the sculptured tip of the Maypole, and some time was spent distributing ribbons around the circle. The most recently-wedded couple became our King and Queen of the May, and came to the center of circle to help collect the energies of the dance that they would release later that night.
A short explanation was given on how to weave the ribbons, and then we were off! Around and around, in and out, the weave tightened on the pole and we danced and sang and drummed until the deed was done and the King and Queen of the May were bound together. (and there was much rejoicing...)
After some short community announcements, the release of the King and Queen, the passing of the staff and the grounding of circle, we returned to the picnic area. The raffle tickets were pulled, (we didn't win) foodstuffs were barbecued, kids played and the rest of us whiled the afternoon away in the warm sun.
