I placed my hands gently on the woman’s feet as she lay face up on the massage table before me. Like the expanding warmth of a sunray on cooled skin, I let my attention soak up her legs and into her body. I felt my awareness meld with her body; let my sensors shift into a different way of seeing and feeling. Her hips felt thick, like the bones were coated in caulk. My focus shifted higher, into her abdomen, where I met a sluggish, unhappy heat. She had complained of stomach pain, and worried that she was forming an ulcer. My awareness drifted around her intestines and the inside of her stomach.

“I don’t see an ulcer. That doesn’t mean it’s not there, but it feels more to me like general indigestion. Like anger.”

She seemed surprised, but asked, “Can you tell who I’m angry at?”

I sat with the churning, stifled heat for a moment. “I get a sense of a general anger. Anger at people for leaving you, and life for being in a less than ideal situation.”

She nodded, but said nothing to confirm or deny my observation.

I felt heaviness, slow and sad in her chest. Her heart felt trapped in heavy bands through which I couldn’t feel.

I rose from the end of the table and moved up to cradle her neck in my hands. Again my focus shifts into her body, to her heart. I sat with the sensation of tightness like a person feeling the air for rain. It feels like a thick rock wall, like I am in stone. It feels like all around me sit cocked mousetraps. Cocked, but locked away in stone.

“I feel a helplessness. Grief, anger, but like you feel you shouldn’t be feeling these things. That you should be a big girl and let it go. Loosing your parents, your job, and having no partner, no assurances, these things are huge. It’s okay to be afraid, angry, and sad.”

“I thought I was done with anger a long time ago, ” she says.

“We are never done with anger. It’s not like chicken pox. It comes up and we need to live with it for a while, let it be okay. Or it gives us ulcers and stomach pain.”

I pushed past the wall, past the heavy heat, through layers of sensation and emotion. I finally came to a place of peace, of calm. We talked a little more and I worked with the energies I felt, shifting and releasing them. At the end of our session I gave her the name and number of a grief counselor.

A few days later she called me back to thank me. She hadn’t realized at all how angry she was, and in talking with the grief counselor she understood that the anger was at herself. Her stomach pain had gone away.

I am a kinesthetic psychic. I feel energy like some people see auras or hear the voices of spirit guides. For years I didn’t realize that sensing non-local information with my body was actually psychic work; I figured it had to be really seen or heard.

I have found in my informal studies of psychic abilities that people tend to have developed one mode of accessing unconscious information most strongly, either by feeling, seeing, or hearing. This preferred mode of sensing is not unlike our preferred mode of learning conscious information, and does not mean a “seer” can’t “hear” or “feel” something psychically, but that they tend to take in information in one way.

These different ways of “seeing” indicate whether a psychic is visual, auditory, or kinesthetic.

Not sure what “kind” of psychic you are? If you…

-- Often choose something kinesthetic (eating, exercise) to do in order to relax
-- Have difficulty accessing physical feelings and emotions
-- Sometimes ignore the limits of the body, pushing beyond or ignoring pain
-- Find deep body sensations very strong when first discovered through things like making love or massage
-- Have the capacity to endure
-- Don’t like quick intimacy. Don’t usually like someone they don’t know hugging them or sitting too close.
-- May not like casual contact, like a touch on the arm.
-- Like your personal space well defined
-- Feel vulnerable in physical activities
-- Can talk of feelings without experiencing a connection with them
-- Feel particularly vulnerable when talking genuinely about feelings and sensations

… then you probably will take in psychic information kinesthetically.

If you…

-- Enjoy letting your eyes rest in nature or on something beautiful to relax
-- Are distracted or tired by too much visual input like driving long distances or visiting shopping malls
-- Find eye contact is very special
-- Have to look away to think
-- Discover insights through the use of guided visualizations or daydreams
-- Have a hard time remembering experiences that were solely visual, such as engrossing movies, details from museums, or specific sights during travel
-- Read or do some other visual activity to relax and become more open
-- Like descriptive writing and can be affected by the look of a word
-- Can become what you are looking at (lose a sense of separation from what is seen)
-- Find it difficult to follow a simply visual plan. Need to translate directions into auditory or kinesthetic to understand
-- Find written words very precious (May have especially disliked having had teachers put red marks on your papers)

… then you may be a visually oriented psychic.

And if you…

-- Need white noise or quiet to be able to listen carefully or to talk on the phone easily
-- Find it difficult to think or write with background noise
-- Have gaps or pauses in your conversations or presentations due to the need to go inward for words
-- Find it difficult to speak if threatened or over stimulated with sound
-- Take words and sounds seriously
-- Can get distracted while talking if noise interrupts
-- Often feel that words don’t capture what you want to say about an inner experience
-- Appreciate silence
-- Feel words and tones as well as the meaning of words
-- Find it difficult in general to talk on the phone
-- Read more effectively by sub-vocalizing or touching the page

…then you may be an auditory psychic.

Of course no one will totally fit any of these descriptions. Several items from each list may fit you, but you may find that one fits you best. As your natural psychic ability develops, you may find one channel “listens” more than others.

By understanding your own style of energetic awareness, you will be able to honor whichever way you get information on the unconscious level.
