Magic in Sentences

My beliefs are what make me. I am a witch and I worship nature. That is where I draw every aspect of my being. Working with others of many different backgrounds is potentially the most important element in focusing my energies. If I can mix and mingle with a multitude of individuals and still contain my own spark of spirit, I find insurmountable inspiration.

Over the past few years, I have experienced myself falling into a writing career. I know that may seem odd. A lot of people decide that they wish to pursue writing and go after it with vigor. I have always written, but never thought it more than a simple hobby.

I even had a teacher in grade school who pulled my mom aside and told her that she didn’t care if I was dyslexic or whatever it was that was causing writing errors, she believed that I had such a capacity for ideas that my hand just couldn’t keep up with my thoughts. It was that teacher who went so far as to suggest that I should aspire to write. But with public school English shoved down my throat, I honestly felt that I was not up to the task.

Writing is intimidating. There is a world of pretentious literary snobs out there who seem to look down their noses at anyone who does not wish to write the next great American novel. Beside them though, there is an interwoven community of friendly word lovers who often encourage anyone with a little skill to create magic in sentences.

It is these artists who I have to thank for my own small successes. Nothing much, a Pagan children’s book, a few articles, and short stories along the way. Last year was the true start to a career that I am now facing ahead. Writing is all encompassing, much like ritual.

The more that I hone in on my craft, the more I find myself spellbound by its effects. I try to take it lightly and keep a bright sense of being about it. No I don’t expect to become rich off of writing. That’s not the point. If I can make a decent living that would be nice, but like many aspects of Wicca, I find that sharing the energy is the highest honor.

The human connection is my aim. Bringing people together through new ideas, or old ones repeated; all of this is linked to my beliefs. I wish to reach a broad audience and touch people of other faiths. Maybe part of that is because I have an undying desire to break stereotypes against witches. Going deeper though, its significance is tied to an internal ideal that although religion is important and constructive when handled properly, it is still man made. Each path is presented to help guide different people in the style that they choose. Spirituality is what links us all together despite this.

I find spirituality through my religion like many others. Instead of using it as a weapon, I wish to allow it to build connections. Oftentimes it has aided me in my writing. There are plenty of instances when writers doubt themselves and their worth to an audience. When I sink down I explore the purpose of the written word, the human connection.

We are all connected whether we like it or not, that is no secret. So when you read someone else’s stories or experiences, you are opening yourself up while offering to listen. It’s so simple and yet complex. Storytelling is a part of being human. Whether we record the stories or just share them orally they link us.

Now when I sit down to tell a story I can feed off of the energies of others to create a tale that resonates with my audience. It is about the performance and the reaction. When I write, and edit, all to submit to a publisher that takes more strength of spirit. I must focus more on myself and my characters, or the situation that I am writing about in non-fiction.

Sometimes I feel like I’m cheating. As a Wiccan I can feel certain things and use those energies to my advantage. Oftentimes I will submit specific works based on the moon’s cycle. Sending out a new piece always feels right near the full moon. You labor and work until it is full and ready for reflection just as the moon will ripen and then start to wane.

To those unlike me, it is all just silly superstition, and that does not bother me. I guess we all have our own little ritualistic ways. The longer that I do this though, the more sacred the process becomes. Even when working in less serious genres I feel a responsibility to attain a certain level of awareness.

On top of this I have the ever-impressing sense of importance to breaking boundaries. I mean how many successful Pagan writers are known out there? And how many don’t just write Pagan material?

Being a label to others is not my aim. I do not wish to just be a Pagan writer, or for people to think of my faith when they think of my writing. Yes, being a Wiccan is what makes me who I am, but it is not me.

People are many things in their lives. I am no different. We are no different. I have grown accustomed to paving my own way. It makes life interesting.

Still, if ever you get a chance to read any of my works, I am glad to know that some of my audience can understand me a bit more than others. There is a great deal of upcoming projects that I wish to share with everyone. My Witches and Pagans article will most likely hold more sway with other Pagans. I could never leave that behind.

Who knows where the wind may blow me? I’ve always trusted it to guide me where I need to be.
