In my last article in this series I used Eric and Caryl Matrisciana and Jeremiah Films as an example of how evangelists can use the media to disseminate misinformation about Satanism. Another well known producer of films on Satanic Conspiracies is Reel To Real Ministries, which had offices in Arlington, VA and Gainesville, FL, but now uses an address in Brentwood, TN and is based in Penascola, FL. Reel to Real Ministries is the brainchild of Eric Holmberg. Holmberg's work has lead to appearances on a number of evangelical Christian shows, including: The 700 Club, John Ankerberg, Beverly LaHaye Live, Point of View, Wake Up America, Mother Angelica Live, Truths That Transform, Heart to Heart, Talk Back, Praise the Lord!, Action 60's, and 100 Huntley Street. In addition, his work has been featured in Focus on the Family Magazine, American Family Association Journal, Family Research Association's Citizen, and the Christian Film and Television Commission's Movie Guide. Holmberg is associated with Marantha Christian Churches International, Christian Assemblies and Intercessors for America.

Holmberg was also instrumental in starting up the Life Van, a mobile pro-life education vehicle that appeared in the July, 1988 edition of Time. Holmberg is also the creator of All Out War, an eleven-part seminar series "designed to win, conscript and train soldiers for the Kingdom of God."(1) Holmberg definitely supports the evangelical Christian concept of Spiritual Warfare.

The biography on the Reel to Real web site ( describes Holmberg as follows:

"In 1980, three years after graduating from the College of William and Mary, Eric's lifestyle of "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" came to an abrupt end at the foot of Calvary's cross. Within a year he felt the call to full-time ministry -- getting involved in campus outreach and later helping plant a church in the Washington D.C. area. Eventually, Eric was set in as a pastor and in 1987 was ordained. It was during this same time that Reel to Real Ministries was born.

"From his beginnings in ministry, Eric sought fresh and relevant ways to communicate the gospel. Recognizing the "paradigm shift" brought about by the modern media industry, Reel to Real was created to utilize the medium of visual art (the "reel") to address the challenges -- and opportunities -- of the "real" world."(2)

Holmberg's associates at Reel to Real Ministries include:
  • Erik Hollander: Hollander is a former art director of the Florida-based company Exhibit Resources, which designed animated robotic figures and setwork for theme parks. Hollander was involved in the artwork in several motion pictures, including Intimate Strangers, Brenda Starr, Licence to Kill, and The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking. In 1991 Hollander joined Reel to Real Ministries and American Portrait Films, helping produce videos, doing photography for book and video covers, and producing paintings and illustrations for books and videos. Since 1994, Hollander has sold paintings and apparel, doing business as Art of the Covenant. These products are offered for sale on the Reel to Real web site. Hollander currently serves as Reel to Real's managing producer.

  • Jay Rogers: Rogers is Reel to Real's associate producer, researcher and writer. A former English teacher, Rogers converted to Christianity in 1985. Rogers created Reel to Real's web site. Rogers also produces the foreign language versions Reel to Real's videos and live seminars. These are intended to be used for evangelism in the former Soviet Union, Europe and Latin America. In 1989 Rogers was the editor of editor of The Forerunner, an evangelical Christian newspaper. He is also the founder of the Russian language Christian newspaper, Predvestnik. In 1993, Jay founded Media House International, a Christian foundation which seeks to train university students world-wide to produce Christian media. Rogers has also been involved with pro-life ministries 1988. He owns a house in Melbourne, Florida directly across the street from an abortion clinic. Rogers is busy turning this house into a pregnancy counseling center.

  • Angela Potthoff: Potthoff is Reel to Real's production coordinator and assistant editor. She interned at Reel to Real Ministries in 1997 while studying journalism. Potthoff started as a radio journalist in 2000. Potthoff has worked for ResponseNews, her campus TV station. She also appeared on KKYT-FM in McCook, Nebraska, and KZ100-FM Hastings, Nebraska. She anchored the Today Show local cut-ins at NBC affiliate KHAS-TV.

  • James Gelet: Gelet is a restaurant manger who became a Christ Follower in 1998. Gelet moved from Washington D.C. to Penascola to join Reel to Real Ministries. They are grooming him as a speaker for Reel to Real's All Out War seminar series.

You can get a feel for how Homberg writes in The Profits of Baal, an editorial page in his Reel to Real web site. Holmberg describes it as "An exposé on gross depravity in the secular media."(3) Holmberg begins this page with the following:

"A nationally circulated Knight-Ridder news story paid homage to the growth of 'neo-paganism' and 'nature religions' such as Wicca (witchcraft). Amid the typical mind-numbing inanities proffered by these Wackomites ("I haven't given up Jesus" one lady said, "I've just broadened my religion.") came one curious moment of clarity: 'Tell me if this is true, ' said an inquisitor from the edge of the (pagan ceremonial) circle. 'You pick what you want like from other religions and throw the pieces together. You might be absolutely wrong, and you know that. But this religion seems true to you, so you believe it. Is that right?' The pagans were delighted. They cheered and laughed and yelled, 'That's it.' All together now, 'Fe-e-e-lings, nothing more than fe-e-e-lings.'"(4)

Note Holmberg's revealing use of the term "inquisitor" in describing the person questioning these Pagans.

In this same section Holmberg holds forth on AIDS:

"Did anyone note the June 5 issue of USA Today? The cover story memorialized the fifteenth anniversary of the AIDS epidemic. A box labeled "The face of an epidemic" featured the photos of three well-known victims: Magic Johnson ( a popular basketball player; Ryan White ( a cute, young hemophiliac who died from AIDS contracted through a blood transfusion; and Mary Fisher ( an attractive "mom-type" who got the disease from her no-good husband. All three are heterosexuals. There's no use standing on the seat ( because HIV can jump forty feet! In a similar vein (no pun intended), Ronald Reagan Jr. exculpated his audience in a nationally televised "educational" special on AIDS: 'AIDS is not a moral issue. You don't get AIDS because you've done bad things.' You gets AIDS because you are trying to loose weight and those little chocolate diet candies are deliciousand...Oh, never mind."

And abortion:

"Good news on the teen pregnancy front: Seeing illegitimate births as a real sociological and economic problem, our peerless leader has decided to confront this growing problem head-on. A presidential task force has been formed! Members include MTV President Judy McGrath and actress Whoopi Goldberg, whose six or seven abortions (she's not sure) and an illegitimate daughter who herself has had a baby out of wedlock at age 15 makes her uniquely qualified to serve our nation in this capacity. If this works, you can look forward to a new presidential commission on the family. Word has it that the Menendez brothers and O.J. Simpson have made the short list."

And popular music:

"What the f*** is shocking? It's 1996. The only thing that shocks me is electricity. I don't know how to pull off shock value anymore." ( David Yow, lead singer of the rock group Jesus Lizard after his arrest in Cincinnati for performing totally nude. I'll tell you what's shocking: the fact that the Cincinnati police had so little respect for his first amendment rights. Apparently these Barney Fifes couldn't grasp what other, more enlightened police departments around the country have come to appreciate (nude performances are fairly common for Yow. Jumping around the stage naked while screaming curses against God is actually a form of religious expression that has been practiced for thousands of years. For crying out loud, it's even in the Bible!"

"The previous week's issue of USA Weekend featured rap star L.L. Cool J. Asked about the filthy language in rap, Mr. Cool made a plea for understanding: 'Look at the emotional landscape. It's like when a hungry baby cries. You can cover it with a pillow, and you won't hear it, but it's still hungry. It still feels anguish.' OK, it helps to understand that these rappers are all a bunch of babies; but now I have another question. If their diapers are full of dookie, is it all right to change them?"

Holmberg has written, directed and produced over twenty videos. Holmberg is the host and narrator of many of these movies. The titles of Holmberg's videos reveal his obsession with two subjects: The dangers of Rock Music and his opposition to pro-choice movements. Holmberg's video titles include:

  • Rock and Roll -- A Search for God. This was Holmberg's first multi-media presentation, which he later turned into a video. Your typical rock-and-roll-causes-Satanism type film.

  • Hells Bells: The Dangers of Rock 'n Roll: Holmberg released this video in 1989 as a sequel to Rock and Roll. 100, 000 copies were sold.

  • Hells Bells 2: An updated version of Hells Bells that was recently released. An eight-part, six-and-a-half-hour documentary which in Holmberg describes "the epic struggle between good and evil, sin and redemption for the souls of men and the destiny of culture."(5)

  • All Rapped Up: Reel to Real released this video in 1991 as an examination of the rap and dance music scene.

  • Hard Truth: In 1991 Holmberg produced another video critical of popular music in America. To date, over 200, 000 copies have been distributed. Holmberg describes it as a video which reaches out "to those who have been deceived by the 'follow your heart/do what thou wilt' ethic that drives the engine of popular culture, this series is powerful ammunition for "setting the captives free!"(6)
  • True Fiction: The Reel to Real web site describes this video as follows: "Three modern day parables 'If You Love Me', 'H.A.L. 666, ' 'Rock Against Lung Cancer, ' take the viewer on a fast-paced and entertaining ride whose ultimate destination is the truth. Designed with life changing ministry in mind, these parables can be used by parents, teachers, and pastors to provoke thoughtful discussion, illustrate a sermon, and convey vital truths to a modern world that often has to see it before they can get it."

  • The Story of America's Liberty: One of those "the creation of a nation from an evangelical Christian perspective" sort of documentaries. A video intended to prove that America is a Christian nation.

  • The Massacre of Innocence: A very pro-life, very anti-feminist and extremely anti-New-Age/Pagan video released in 1986. We'll take a closer look at this video in a moment.

Holmberg recently created the 5 part Hollywood series of videos including:

  • Hollywood- The Power and Philosophy: Part 1 of this series. "Protect your family from the power of Hollywood's seduction, " the Reel to Real ad says, "Learn how TV, movies, and today's music can harm your children."

  • Hollywood: Sex and Seduction: Part 2 of the series. "Hollywood is out to seduce you and your children, " the Reel to Real ad warns, "See how the entertainment industry delights in violating every sexual taboo in its opposition to biblical sexuality. Prevent this insidious force from undermining your family's values."

  • Hollywood - Lights! Camera! Blasphemy! Part 5 of the series. "This video explores the view of Christ, Christianity, and Christians as advanced by the "high priests" of today's entertainment industry, " the Reel to Real ad tell us, "From the movie Inherit the Wind to the rock group, Nine Inch Nails, the war against all things sacred is exposed in startling detail."
