In his book America's Occult Holidays Marquis tries to convince us that Christmas was "an ancient occult ceremony dedicated to the birthday of Tammuz, the son of the cofounders of the occult, Nimrod and Semiramis." Marquis tells us that Christmas was forbidden by the early American pilgrims. Marquis goes on to claim that "Easter... is in fact the celebration of the return of Semiramis into her reincarnated form of the spring goddess" and that "Halloween... is the deadliest holiday ever celebrated in human history... which is dedicated to the Celtic lord of the dead." Of course, Christmas originated out of the old Yule (winter solstice) traditions, not out of the Middle East. Easter is named for the Saxon fertility Goddess Eostre and has nothing to do with Semiramis. Halloween was never dedicated to the Celtic lord of the dead.
Marquis's book Secrets of the Illuminati, encapsulates the disparate elements that he is trying to paste together in his many books and presentations. Secrets of the Illuminati lists various symbols that Marquis has interpreted or combined in outlandish ways using peculiar logic to come up with even stranger conclusions. They all come together in a seal for the "New World Order" which Marquis has created in Secrets of the Illuminati. This seal consists of a triple circle with a Star of David in the middle. In this seal Marquis lists six things: The Illuminati, the Masons, the Black Pope, Rock 'n Roll, the House of Rothschild, and the Two Seals of Our Doom. One of these is placed at each point of this star. Inside the perimeter of the outermost circle Marquis lists: "8 Sabbats, Catholocism [sic], Rosicrucians, Satanism, D&D." Between each of these words is a series of Hebrew letters. Superimposed over the center of this is a three quarter side view of a rectangular altar bearing three symbols: An inverted crucifix and the two sides of the Great Seal of the United States. Above the sigil is the words "I Witch" in red, surmounted by an "all seeing eye" in a triangle. Red blood streams down from the letters i, t and c in the word Witch, around the circle in which the name "Illuminati" is written and onto the top of this altar and overflows out of the lower left corner of the page. One can summarize his interpretation of this seal as follows:
The "all seeing eye" at the top of the diagram, which is described as, the "Eye of Horus," is supposed to be Satan looking down on all the activity being done on his behalf.
NOTE: Remember this one? We encountered the Utchat or "Eye of Horus" in amongst Warnke's nonsense in an earlier article. It is not a symbol of Satan. One of the reasons that people like Marquis go after the Great Seal of the US is that they are misinterpreting the symbols and mottos depicted upon it, particularly those on the reverse side, which depicts an unfinished pyramid surmounted by an eye in a triangle, and surrounded by the Latin expressions Annuit Coeptis and Novus Ordo Seclorum. The first Latin phrase was inspired by the Roman poet Virgil, who lived in the first century BCE. In the Aeneid, book IX, line 625, is the phrase: "Jupiter omnipotens, audacibus annue coeptis." (All-powerful Jupiter, favor [my] daring undertakings.) Also, in Virgil's Georgics (book I, line 40) are the words: "Da facilem cursum, atque audacibus annue coeptis." (Give [me] an easy course, and favor [my] daring undertakings.) Charles Thomson changed the first person imperative "annue" to the third person "annuit." In the motto Annuit Coeptis, the subject of the verb must be supplied, and the translator must also choose the tense. We know that Thomson said: "The pyramid signifies Strength and Duration: the Eye over it & the Motto allude to the many signal interpositions of providence in favour of the American cause." The eye is therefore the missing subject, and the translation of Annuit Coeptis would be: "The Eye of Providence is favorable to our undertakings."
The second Latin phrase, Novus Ordo Seclorum, was also chosen by Charles Thomson. In the fifth line of Eclogue IV, Virgil also wrote the phrase "Magnus ab integro seclorum nascitur ordo." This has been translated in several ways, including, "A mighty order of ages is born anew", "The great series of ages begins anew", "the ages' mighty march begins anew" and "the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew." Thomson coined the phrase "Novus ordo seclorum", which means "a new order of the ages". People like Marquis chose to mistranslate this phrase as "a new secular world order."
The word "I" is supposed to represent the self-centered, self-proclaimed wise man working for Satan.
NOTE: I think that Marquis is the self-centered, self-proclaimed "wise man" here.
The word "Witch" is supposed to represent the witchcraft that will be practised in many forms to bring on the New World Order. Marquis describes Witchcraft as the worship of Satan.
NOTE: Impossible, as Wiccans don't recognize Satan and don't subscribe to the concept of a New World Order.
The blood flowing from the word "Witch" is supposed to represent the blood that has flowed and will flow in order to create the New World Order.
The outer circle represents the organizations that Marquis believes to be cooperating to bring about the New World Order:
The Roman Catholic Church.
NOTE: This is obviously an idea which Marquis has borrowed from the likes of Alexander Hislop (author of the book The Two Babylons) and Ralph Edward Woodrow (author of Babylon Mystery Religion).
Satanism, which Marquis defines as active worship of Satan.
Rosicrucianism, which Marquis describes as a secret society.
NOTE: The Rosicrucians were said to have been founded by Christian Rosenkreutz. Rosenkreutz was born in 1378 in Germany and reputed to have lived to the age of 106. His name means "Christian of the Rosy Cross." The earliest mention of Rosenkreutz and the Rosicrucians is in the Fama Fraternitatis ("Account of the Brotherhood"), an account of the journeys of Rosenkreuz written by an anonymous author which appeared in 1614 CE. The Fama Fraternitatis describes Rosenkruetz as having gathered secret occult wisdom in trips to Damascus, Egypt, the Arabian city of Damcar, and the Morocan city of Fes.
The names Rosenkreuz and Rosicrucian both derive from the symbol of this organization, which is a combination of a cross and a rose. They are also known as the Brothers of the Rosy Cross, Rosy Cross Knights or Rosy Cross Philosophers.
There is no evidence that at the the time of the appearance of the Fama Fraternitatis there was any Rosicrucian order at all. Many now believe that Christian Rosenkreuz was never more than a mythical figure and that the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus was the actual founder of the Rosicrucians. Many later mystical lodges later claimed to have been descended from the Rosicrucians, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The most well known modern Rosicrucian organization is the Ancient and Mystic Order Rosae Crucis (A.M.O.R.C.), based in San Jose, California.
As the Roscicrucian's symbol and name suggest, there is nothing Satanic about them.
Dungeons & Dragons.
NOTE: While Marquis recognizes that this is a game, he also describes it as an instructional manual on practical Satanism, and lists it here as if it was an organization.
Satanic Sabbats: Marquis repeats the claim that he made earlier that there are eight Sabbats per year and that each requires human sacrifice.
NOTE: Marquis is simply borrowing the eight Sabbats celebrated by Wiccans and trying to append the concept of human sacrifice.
Marquis tells us that the Hebrew letters between the English words in the outer circle spell out the odd phrase "Witchcraft Today For As Much Within Ancient Babylon" backwards.
NOTE: Marquis admits that he spelled the phrase backwards because he believes that this is the traditional way that Satanists do this. Perhaps he thought that this might help the poor grammar too?
Marquis says that these Hebrew characters represent a Jewish secret society called he names as "the Cabala" and that the significance of this is that today's witchcraft was derived from ancient Bablyon. He claims that the Jewish Cabala is the most influential of all secret societies working towards a New World Order.
NOTE: Here Marquis again reveals his ignorance of things metaphysical. Marquis uses the term witchcraft in this context as a synonym for Satanism. Neither the Qabbalah nor Wicca originated in Babylon.
Qabalah (Variations: QBLH, Qabbalah, Cabala or Kaballah) is a philosophy, not a secret Jewish order as Marquis suggests. The name is derived from the Hebrew word QBLH ("qabalah"), which means "received teachings." Its root is the Hebrew word QBL ("qibel"- "to receive"). Another name for the Qabalah is Chokmah Nesthorah ("the secret wisdom"). This word first appeared in the English language as "Cabala", meaning a mystical interpretation of the Old Testament. By 1665 the meaning had changed to mean any mysterious, secret or esoteric doctrine.
The Qabalah developed in the Middle ages in South Western Europe, later taking root in the Galilean city of Safed. The main text of the Qabalah is the Zohar, which was written in Spain in the thirteenth century CE. The Qabalah includes three other major treatises: The Sepher Yetzirah, the Sepher Sephiroth and the Asch Metzareph.
The Qabalah has a strong Messianic element. The Qabalah teaches that the universe was created through a series of emanations from the supreme Godhead or Ain Soph Aur, travelling downward through 10 stages called Sephiroth, arranged in a structure refered to as the OTz ChIIM ("Otz Chaiim" or "Etz Chayim") which translates as "Tree of Life". The Tree of Life is used by the Qabalists to organize everything in existence. Its ten ascending Sephiroth are arranged across three pillars (Severity, Equilibrium and Mercy).
The Qabalah can be divided into four categories: The practical Qabalah, the literal Qabalah, the unwritten Qabalah and the dogmatic Qabalah. Practical Qabalah deals with talismanic and ceremonial magic. Literal Qabalah deals with the interpretation of words and letters. The unwritten Qabalah is an oral tradition of esoteric knowledge.
The second circle in Marquis's seal lists organizations that Marquis believes to be influential:
The Illuminati. We can't expect a book by Marquis to be missing this element, can we? Here he claims that the Illuminati were modelled after the Jesuits.
The Masons. Marquis exploits the old link between Weishaupt's Illuminati and the Masons, claiming that Weishaupt's associates infiltrated Freemasonry and turned it into a Satanic order working for a New World Order.
The Two Seals of Our Doom is what Marquis is calling the two Great Seals of the United States here. Marquis believes that these two seals were delivered to Thomas Jefferson by the Illuminati to ensure that the US would be created according to the occult plan of the New World Order.
The House of Rothschild. Marquis lists the Rothschild family as one of Weishaupt's early backers and claims that this family is a prime example of multi-generational Witchcraft. This is the same anti-Semitic nonsense that we saw Todd bring up earlier in this chapter.
Rock-n-Roll. This is same "rock and roll causes Satanism" argument that we saw Todd making earlier in this chapter. Todd blamed it on the Druids. Marquis suggests that this is part of the New World Order's plan to indoctrinate children. Both were influenced by the people that I discussed back in chapter 2.
The Black Pope. Marquis refers to the Jesuits as a Satanic secret society. He claims that when the Jesuits were created in 1741, their leader was a Black Pope adept in Satanic arts, who has moved the Roman Catholic church into the practice of witchcraft. Marquis claims that this Black Pope uses a Twisted Cross as his symbol, which is the symbol of the Anti-Christ and states that it is this Twisted Cross that Pope John Paul II now uses.
NOTE: Marquis needs to go back and study history. The Jesuits (also known as the Society of Jesus) were founded by a Spanish soldier, Ignatius Loyola. Pope Paul II approved the formation of the Jesuits on 27 September, 1540, two hundred years earlier than the date listed by Marquis. By the 18th century the preeminent position attained by the Jesuits and their support of the Pope created many enemies. There was a lot of anti-clerical and anti-papal movements in the 1700s. The Jesuit's many adversaries, both lay and clerical, specifically the governments of France, Spain and Portugal, put pressure on the Pope to have the Society of Jesus shut down. In 1773 Pope Clement XIV bowed to this pressure and disbanded the Jesuits. The Jesuits were reestablished by Pope Pius VII in 1814. This nonsense about a Black Pope appears to be a 18th century urban legend about the Jesuits borrowed by Marquis for this fantastic tale of his.
Marquis describes the inner hexagram as a demon trap, used by Witches to conjure and control demons.
NOTE: This is the fourth time that we've encountered the hexagram: The previous three people incorporating it into their claims were Warnke, Sanguinet and Todd. It is also another point that further illustrates Marquis' lack of metaphysical expertise. Given the anti-Semitic tone of this and other works by Marquis, I suspect that this is why he included this particular symbol in this seal.
It is when Marquis refers to this symbol as a "demon trap" that his lack of expertise begins to reveal itself. I listed all of the examples of the use of the hexagram in the grimoires of Occidental Ceremonial Magic earlier. Nowhere in these examples was the hexagram referred to Occidental Ceremonial Magic as a "demon trap."
Marquis placed a sacrificial altar in the middle of this seal because he wants us to believe that human sacrifice is common place in what he calls the occult. This is one of the reasons that he has depicted blood flowing over the altar. He has placed the Great Seals of the United States on the side and labeled them the Two Seals Of Our Doom.
Marquis's book The Illuminati's Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is also representative of the hysterical nonsense being peddled here. USCCCNII founder Alan Herbert Peterson (Marquis's publisher) claims this to be:
"One of the most valuable books in all of history to have ever been decoded and translated into printed text. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, it will reveal the Illuminati's designs and how it is, exactly, that they plan to take over the world. For those who are skeptical or find this extremely hard to believe, you might want to first prepare yourself for what you are about to uncover by initially reading the truly revealing SECRETS OF THE ILLUMINATI. Approximately two-hundred years old, the original 'Protocols' were mistakenly thought to be that of a Zionist document, hence, a Zionist Conspiracy. What no one knew, however, was that the original 'Protocols' had been 'encoded,' as are all documents within both the Illuminati and Masonic worlds. Without knowing how to "decode" such an Illuminati document, everyone would be led to believe in the concept of a Zionist Conspiracy.
"Now, Doc Marquis, a former twenty-year-member of the Illuminati, or an Illuminist/Luciferian, has both "decoded" and re-written 'THE ILLUMINATI'S PROTOCOLS OF THE LEARNED ELDERS OF ZION',as a sequel to 'SECRETS OF THE ILLUMINATI"to prove that, once and for all, it is NOT a Zionist document, but a document perceived and created by the Illuminati."
The Illuminati's Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, is an interesting combination of two very old frauds. One has been borrowed from Abbe Barruel and concerns the continued existence of the Illuminati as an international Jewish organization conspiring to bring about a single world government led by the Anti Christ. As you can see here, Marquis has simply come up with another version of Barruel's claims by linking it to another famous 19th century fraud: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which, earlier in this series, we saw was adapted by other Satanic Conspiracy myth disseminators into the "W.I.C.C.A. Letters" myth.
Like Deputy Gaerin, Marquis claims to have "decoded" this document. Like the original Protocols fraud, Marquis claims that it is a seven point plan for world domination. In The Illuminati's Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion Marquis then tries to prove "the Illuminati's political power through the Two Seals of the United States, found on the back of the one-dollar bill, which are NOT those of the United States, but actually belong to the Illuminati." These are the "two seals of doom" that he was referring to in Secrets of the Illuminati. Marquis claims to have discovered a "truly unique method of surreptitious 'encoding'" which has revealed "the hidden triple hexagram which makes up the "Mark of the Beast (666)"; and proves, conclusively, that the Masons are involved in the Illuminati's global conspiracy." There's that hexagram again.
An appendix at the end of The Illuminati's Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion describes "'Executive Order 11490', an order which Marquis claims originated with the President of the United States. Marquis states:
"If ever implemented, this order will doom us all and allow the Illuminati to take over the United States of America. What's even worse is that this Executive Order, signed by former President Richard M. Nixon (October 28, 1969), has already been passed, and may be called upon by any President of the United States, within his or her respective administration, whenever the Illuminati deems."
Marquis and his publisher Peterson try to make an issue out of practising Neo-Pagans in the US Armed Forces:
"What most Americans also do not realize is that most of the major occult religions have been and continue to be actively and legally practiced by members of America's armed forces, on military bases throughout the world."
They go on to point out that the United States Army's Religious Requirements and Practices of Certain Selected Groups: A Handbook For Chaplains - Pamphlet 165-13, released on April 28, 1978, "provides information on all such sanctioned occult religions and belief systems which are federally recognized and have been an active part of Military Chaplain training and in active preferred religious practice by military personnel since the mid-1960's." The inference appears to be that the Illuminati has infiltrated the US military. The only thing that this really reveals is the growth of legal Pagan spiritual paths within modern society. Pagans within the US military may have their religious preference listed on their dog tags. It isn't a conspiracy, it is freedom of religion, a concept that Peterson and Marquis don't seem to support.
Armed with fantastic stories such as this, Marquis appeared on the television shows of Geraldo Rivera and Oprah Winfrey and on the program Unsolved Mysteries. Marquis went on to found the National Occult Liberation Outreach Center. He bills himself as an "occult crime expert" and acts as a trainer and/or consultant for police agencies. Marquis obtained a letter of recommendation from Chief Norman Connors of the Allenstown PD, who claims to have done "an extensive background" on Marquis. Connors stated that "We told [Marquis] that if we found he'd done anything illegal, we'd arrest him, but he came out clean as a whistle." I guess they didn't identify fraudulent claims as a subject of concern. This is also interesting, since it seems to indicate that the police can find no evidence of Marquis having participated in human sacrifices, thus disproving the claims that Marquis has made in attempts to prove his expertise.
Ted Gunderson, a former FBI investigator, now a private investigator, is another outspoken supporter of Marquis. Gunderson appeared on several Geraldo shows and, like Marquis, claims that there are plots to kill him. He supports the claims of other "survivors," such as Jacquie Balodis. Gunderson was one of the major players in the McMartin Day Care trial. Karen Kintella, director of VICTIMS (Valuable Information For Cult Traumatized Individuals And MPD Survivors)in Houston, Texas is another Marquis supporter. Marquis recommends both McCulley and Gunderson as "occult crime experts" since they believe his bizarre tales. Marquis also recommends Lt Larry Jones of CCIN Inc, Joe Vieira of Shatter The Darkness Ministries, Lyndon Larouche, author Alexander Hislop, and fundamentalist anti-rock crusader Jeff Godwin.
As we have already seen, Marquis dislikes anyone who shows him up, which is an easy thing to do. He dislikes Ken Lanning of the FBI, who has disproved the figures that Marquis uses. As I already pointed out, he hates Whitney Streiber since the 1987 Oprah Winfrey show. Amazingly, Marquis wrote to Laurie Cabot, who also appeared on this show with him, a few days after the show, masquerading as a viewer of the show who was interested in receiving a copy of the WLPA's report. Incredibly, he signed it "Doc Marquis". The WLPA report was sent to him and on 20 June 1988 Marquis sent another letter signed "Doc" in which he writes about himself and tries to coerce Cabot into apologizing.
Marquis appears to be a simple minded individual seeking fame and fortune by claiming to be an occult expert. To quote Jim MacDonald: "If he is telling the truth, why isn't he in jail? And if he isn't telling the truth, why is he training our police?" Marquis inadvertently summed it up to MacDonald in his interview when he stated "And that's the problem. These so-called quote-unquote 'experts' are giving us more problems than anyone." I have to agree.
