| It's Not as Simple as Black and White (Magick)

Light and Dark. Is there such a thing? Can people be as simple as Good and Bad, Benevolent and Malicious? This is a question I am sure many people have asked themselves, - well maybe not, but I have.
In Wicca, I do not see things as black and white. I’ve opened my mind to a palette of colors I never saw before. People may ask, is there such a thing as Black magick? Or even White Magick? In my eyes, I see neither. It is all a strong surge of magickal potential.
Magick travels in a straight line in my third eye, like a bursting ray of light. It is who calls upon that magick that has alignment. And if they are aligned darkly, they are but fools. Haven’t they heard of the law of Three??
Before I go on, here is my story...
For all my early years I went to a Unitarian Universalist church- a very open church indeed. I came into the Wiccan faith through my Mother- although, she herself is a Pagan. She was a sage in her circle when we lived in southern Houston. However, because Wicca and Paganism have so very much in common, I learned many of my basic principles from her teachings. She taught me about the Goddess and the God, the Rule of Three, and to Respect the earth and all aspects of Nature.
My Sister, who is ten years my senior, and I, did circle work together when the need arose. I remember us dancing around the living room, making circles of salt on the carpet, and having to vacuum it up afterwards- probably sucking the magic up with it, but it had to be done.
When I was thirteen, I was deceived into my father’s custody. He made me sign a document on my birthday-- the day it was legal for me to make a choice between parents-- without telling me what it was I was signing.
Now, I know that my father loves me, and I understand he wants the best for me. He never got to raise my brother or sister because he was working overseas for the important years of our lives, and I’m sure he felt really left out. But surely he should have at least informed me properly of what it was I was signing! At 13, I was far too naïve to understand...
My Dad was engaged. He was going to marry an Irish woman named Eleanor. Eleanor is and was much nicer than my father. Whenever I went to visit him overseas when I was younger, I always loved going to her house. She was absolutely lovely! She was always someone who was joyful to be around. She was very new-age and spiritual herself, although, she isn’t Wicca, Just a new age Christian. You know, all about the messages from the angels. :D
When I was told I was leaving my mother and siblings and moving to Ireland, I was devastated. I was told only two weeks before we got on the plane, and I still was very sour over it. I begged the goddess every time I stared up at the moon: Please let me go home; Please don’t make me leave all I had ever known. I was 14 at this time, eager to start high school, but I never got the chance...
I arrived at Shannon Airport in the country of Eire, horrified that the goddess had deserted me. I thought it was the worst thing in the world. I nearly launched a custody battle to get me back in my mother’s care, but it never came about. However, I never stopped living. I never stopped believing that there was magick in the world. I had to believe somehow that the Goddess had her reasons.
And she most certainly did! A year after living in Ireland, I met a boy. I think you can see where this story is going. We fell in love, and I’ve been going out with him now for 10 months. XP. Yeah, Yeah, it’s cheesy, but I really think that the Goddess did this on purpose. I think it was fate that brought me to Conor. Only he has made it possible to survive this country. Slowly, I started to settle. He calmed my nerves, made me happy and comfortable.
I’ve realized that Ireland isn’t so bad. Its educational system is better than the one in the U.S. (however with the cutbacks in this year’s Irish Budget, it might not be for long) , and the landscape never ceases to astound me.
Back on topic:
Everything happens for a reason. There is order directing all chaos. Things WILL work out. As for Black and White, I just see the world as a shade of grey. Magick has purpose.
Black and White is a matter of opinion, and certain people see things and situations in different lights. (However, once again STRONGLY note that magick used for vengeful purposes is the silliest form of magic there is, because anything you do or send towards another person gets tossed back at you three times!)
As I said, I see in colors. And some colors can be either Bright, or Dim...
It annoys me whenever I see people telling others “I’m a White witch!” or, “I’m doing Black Magick.” Because it’s simply ignorant! I think it’s important for people to understand that the magick isn’t sided, it’s you! And if you call yourself a White or Black witch, then you are labeling yourself, calling yourself Good or Evil, and in a way, that is kind of ignorant as well!
Certainly you may think you are destined to save the world with magick, and have only done healing spells your entire existence, but that doesn’t mean that you are necessarily ‘White’. No one is as simple as that! Everyone has color!
I don’t see anyone’s need to label themselves or others. I believe we should all be unique, not conform to pre-historic ideas of Allegiances! The Goddess and the God aren’t completely good or completely evil- and no one’s soul is one way or the other either. It’s all Spirit.
One who is seen doing malicious or vengeful magic however must be either uninformed of the consequences, or simply driven mad into it. But anyone who does a bad, stupid thing, isn’t a Black Witch. He or she is just confused and mislead. They need to be told the consequences, and they need to learn how to let go of such cancerous emotions such as hatred, envy, or fear. Witches need to help one another, not label each other.
No situation is as straightforward as Good or Bad. No one person is as easy to understand as Light or Dark. Sometimes, you have to understand what got them there, and have to figure out how you can help to ease the pain inside that might drive one to do “Black Magick”.
You see, it’s all how you see things... Some people however need to see things through fresh lenses.
