Some of you reading this may only be starting out on your pagan path whereas some of you may not. I’ve read so many articles here on Witchvox about how we all feel that connection with nature, perhaps we more than others. That’s great; I feel the same. That is why some of us signed up to the website in the first place, because we wanted to share our thoughts and opinions with like-minded people, or for whatever reason. But a question so many of us tend to still ponder is: how did I find my path in the first place?
There are some people out there who are magic wannabes. They haven’t thought about what it means at all. Sure, magic plays an important role in the lives of most of us, but no one wise chose it because all they cared about was magic. However, to some that’s the way it is.
Whether your favorite aspects are divination, ritual, honoring the Gods and Goddesses or celebrating the rhythms of nature, there is more than magic that is involved.
Another major question that is frequently brought up is: “How do I know I really am destined to be a Wiccan/pagan/heathen?” The answer is, no one knows. But we all want to continue our paths for life, don’t we? Of course, and I guarantee most of you will for an entire lifetime.
We ask so many questions, when sometimes the answers lie right in front of us. I believe that Wiccans, pagans and all of those belonging to an earth-centered religion are more likely to question these things, as most I’ve met are full of curiosity. I’m not saying we are nosey or better than anyone else, but that we are keen to explore life and seek the answers we would like to discover.
Half of you are probably reading this and disagree with me, but like I said, it doesn’t mean everyone is the same. Try asking eighty people what their opinion of life is and you are bound to get eighty different answers. I mean, come on, it would be boring if we all agreed with each other and believed the same thing.
I would never abandon Wicca as my religion, but how do I know it’s right for me? Am I’m destined to believe in it? I’m almost certain it is right, but not 100% certain and I bet it’s the same for a lot of you. Picture this—it’s sunset on a breathtaking beach. Soon the starry sky can be seen. You look up and admire the beauty of it, but nobody else seems to really care. You think, am I the only one?
Could be. Or somewhere, whether it’s 600 miles away or 5 miles away, others could be looking up at the sky and thinking the same as you. A close connection with nature and the divine probably led the majority of you to paganism in the first place. Then there comes that gut feeling, a bit like a sixth sense. You may have been a pagan all your life without ever realizing it until now, finding most of your beliefs slotted into place perfectly with this religion/way of life. That’s what happened to me. I began to think I was plain weird (still am slightly, hee-hee) , but when I found Wicca I definitely came home. I discovered I wasn’t the only one, that there are others like me.
No matter what you beliefs are and what shapes your opinion, keep the faith. Religion wasn’t created for the fun of it. It was created to put that feeling of connection into action, both spiritually and mentally. Whatever you believe, you’ll find that there probably is a religion to fit your belief structure, so trust your instincts and you’ll find yourself on a firm path in no time (or perhaps with a little bit of guidance from others) .
There are always claims of evidence of the afterlife and supernatural things like that, but you don’t necessarily have to believe them; besides, these claims may be false. As I say, believe what you think is correct. For example, I am on my way to strengthening my belief and faith in the God and the Goddess. However, some of you may think I’m wrong entirely, but I would never take it as offence. Our instincts are probably the most important guides in heading us in the right direction.
Desires are essential too. If you have a talent for art, then trust your instincts on your way to becoming an artist. The same applies for everything else. Just because you may face criticism from a number of people, it doesn’t mean you are bad and should doubt yourself. Everybody has faults. Every day I silently complain to myself, but I’m missing the point. I am so lucky—I’m healthy, loved, have a roof over my head and have money, have brilliant friends and family.
I am grateful because we all know awful things exist such as poverty, war, natural suffering, you name it… We all know there are negative emotions like envy, grief, sadness and humiliation, but, well, what can I say except that we can all do a little better and help where and when we can.
As this is my first essay, I’m going to leave it short but simple. Remember it’s always your own opinion that matters most. You can interpret whatever you want out of this article. That’s one of the reason I share these thoughts actually. Be yourself and pay attention to that gut feeling. That, my fellow pagans, happens to be called an instinct.
Blessed be, my fellow pagans… ) O (
