Many spiritualists find themselves living in two separate worlds, even from the beginning of their lives. As they grow up, mature, learn and gain experience, this dual life becomes something very usual, an irreplaceable part of their lives. As their hearts and mind open up, they explore, study, interact with both parts of the world they live in and, at one stage of their progress, most will end up asking the question: what is reality?
Scientists, open-minded people, adventurers, explorers, philosophers, psychologists and many more echo this same question. From a spiritual point of view the answer is not as complicated and mysterious as it may be for other categories, but exploring the possibilities will end up to even more questions. In this article I would like to present a possible answer, my own point of view, a little something that I discovered during my journeys.
The ‘reality’ that we are living in is composed of three instances for every individual. The first and most important in my opinion is the spiritual reality. The spiritual reality, as I name it, is a very ancient concept, adapted by most ancient civilizations, and accepted by most spiritualists in the modern times. It is basically the ethereal blueprint of everything in existence, the unseen architecture of the WHOLE. This is the highest instance of reality and it influences and shapes all the others.
Some people perceive this as the "playground of the Gods" or "The will of God", where the Supreme Being "dreams" everything into existence and where everything is "designed" just as an artist shapes his work of art. It is clear for many that we all belong to this great reality, for we are in the Divine, and we are strongly linked to it, even if some people cannot or choose not to acknowledge this.
The second instance is the physical reality. We can easily say that this is basically our home, our natural environment; it is the material world where we are currently manifesting ourselves. In some ways the physical world is strongly linked to the divine one because it basically follows the ethereal blueprint and manifests the reality present there in a physical fashion. But because the divine reality is infinitely complex, or maybe actually too simple, the physical world has to have certain limitations and rules in order to be sustainable, and in order to maintain a certain balance. This is called the laws of physics... but as scientists are discovering as we speak... these laws may differ very much in certain regions and stages of our physical reality. Nevertheless they all serve their purpose.
The third and final stage is our personal reality, our inner world where we tend to decrypt, analyze, examine everything that we come in contact with and experience in the outer reality. Interpreting the information that we perceive, we will decide what actions will shall take, how we will react, what attitude we shall manifest etc. This mechanism is perfectly logical and understandable. It just like reading a book. In order to actually understand the information, we must interpret the symbols (letters, numbers, etc.) and then transform the words into sentences, the sentences into a wider overlook, link feelings, emotions, opinions to it, and so on.
A spiritualist develops a much more complex, sensitive, sophisticated personal inner reality because he/she senses the spiritual reality as well. While handling the physical one is much easier (as we have instincts, reflexes a sense of self preservation even from birth) , interpreting the spiritual one takes time, and an unending spiritual adventure, exploration.
Ideally, with enough understanding, wisdom and self-knowledge, a connection, an attunement, and harmony between the three instances of reality will occur and thus a spiritualist should be able to not only access, but also manifest him/herself in all three. In the wildest scenario, it may even be possible to conquer matter, thereby transforming one's self into a partially ethereal and partially physical being. By living in both spiritual and physical reality, being in harmony with both should theoretically create this state of existence.
But this process doesn't occur very often in the present day. The histories of many cultures show us that such individuals arose and existed, performing "miracles" and being acknowledged as great spiritual masters. It seems that this phenomenon wasn't that rare in the past, so why is it so unusual nowadays? I have met one or two extraordinary people who in my opinion and beliefs should have mastered certain instances of all realities, but still they are limited. I naturally asked myself why is this? What has changed over the thousands, maybe tens of thousands of years, so much that certain things don't work the same way?
The answer that I came across maybe is very strange, some might even say that it's merely fictional, but in my opinion it makes a lot of sense. What really changed during those thousands of years was that another instance of reality was brought into existence by all of us. It is well known that our divine sparks, the very core of our beings, is capable of creation. This is the main principle of a magical working, so, in my opinion, it is very likely (and possible) that we created our own collective layer of reality that is neither physical, nor divine, not even personal, but SOCIAL.
We all live and function in society; it is something that we could not be without, and in most parts of the world it is not a choice, but a given fact. And the society that we live in has rules, laws, structures, mechanisms psychological, educational, behavioral, legal, financial... you name it, and these rules and permanently empowered, fed, channeled by billions of people. And the fact that so many sources of creation, cores of power live, dwell, inhabit in this structure called society... for us who are in it, it is an instance of reality, just like the rest.
As a spiritualist explores, studies, tries to understand all the others in order to reach that certain level of mastery, as I said earlier... spiritualists in the present day must also do so with this newer layer called ‘social reality’. But unlike the others, getting in tune with it would limit us greatly, so what we can do is: study it. Know it. Identify its key elements and eventually, counteract all its limitations so that even if we live in it, it may no longer hold us down or keep us shackled. Most spiritualists, who come to realize this, tend to fight it, brake it, and then escape by any means… but perhaps we need to allow ourselves to experience it, and live in it, in order to understand it better.
Just as in our bodies’ immune system, perhaps we need to actually face a danger in order to develop immunity to it. I am sure that this is easier said than done because while spiritualists bring with them their old knowledge, their past experiences, their open minds and hearts... still, they need to take it from scratch when they want to explore a reality that was (spiritually speaking) just created.
As the old saying goes, "practice makes a master". In nature, adaptation makes a true survivor.
