Don't Mess With Mother Nature!

If you have seen as many summers as I have, you will remember an old margarine commercial which featured the dialog line "Don't mess with Mother Nature!" Then this oldish lady with flowing robes and flowers in her hair would sweep her arm and thunder and lightening would flash across the TV screen. It was telling the public that this product was better than "natural butter" and Mother Nature was angry at being outdone by this big company making fake butter. I used the product, and smiled every time I saw the commercial, but the tag line "Don't mess with Mother Nature" has stuck with me. When you think about it, I think that you will see that this is really good advice.
Messing with Mother Nature is what every one of us do every day! When we don't recycle that plastic water bottle we mess with Mother Nature. When we throw trash out of the car window thinking that we are making jobs for others in cleaning this up, there you are. Even washing our clothes and using the toilet throws nature out of balance. We change everything we touch. We create with destruction. All of our factories that make all the things we "need" to get through the day produce what we call "by-products" that go into our air and water. Get into your car and drive to a meeting where you discuss the environment and you have destroyed just by driving your car. We as Americans make more trash and air pollution than any other country in the world. We are nasty people.
I am not saying that we should all get a horse and buggy and give up inside plumbing. Even primitive peoples impact the environment. If you plow a field to plant you have changed it. If you damn a stream to irrigate your fields you have changed nature. If you cut down a tree to build your house you have left your mark. Just living our lives makes us destroyers. We are by nature at odds with nature. I don't think that we can help a lot of the damage we do. It is as much a part of our lives as breathing. (Which is one of the good things we do. Plants need carbon dioxide!) We could no more go a day without using something prepackaged or brought to us by combustion engine than we could go a day without going to the bathroom. We need the convenience of the shopping mall and the grocery store so that we have time for other things. We need to move quickly in our airplanes and cars. We need jobs and the money that these polluting jobs bring to the household. The needs of man have always outweighed the needs of this planet. As it was said in an old TV show (You can tell that I was raised on TV) we "infest" Earth. Our every move makes a difference in what was. We are, all of us, movers and shakers of all that is around us so what can we do? Live natural.
Even though we wound Mother Nature every day we do not have to try to kill her. Try walking when possible instead of immediately jumping into the car. You know that we all could use more exercise and that brings me to one of my pet gripes. Why do we spend all that money for yoga classes and aerobics classes and circle the parking lot at the mall for twenty minutes for a front parking place? We just PAID for exercise and now we cannot walk an extra few feet to buy that new exercise video? What is wrong with us? The car is chugging out that poison and you are waiting for a ninety year old man to back out of a parking place so you will not have to walk any father than he did? I don't get it!
And food. You go on a diet to make yourself healthy and you buy a freezer-full of prepackaged "postage stamp" size dinners. All you are doing is making trash and yourself sick. Fruit, fresh vegetables and nuts are what you need. Yogurt and whole grain bread will fill you up with good things, not preservatives and additives that you cannot even pronounce. Think about that fast food burger that you just ate, not because it is not "on your diet" but because of the paper and plastic it took to get it to you. Really, next time you feel the call of the burger and fries Siren look at what is left after the meal is over. There is more paper left than there was food to eat! If you do not have a problem with this then you have a problem. And soft drinks. Does it not tell you something that right in the middle of a pro-environmental push to clean up the planet the major cola companies went from returnable glass bottles to all plastic one-way bottles? They are marked recyclable but take a walk through a landfill and see what you see. Are we crazy?
No we are not crazy but we are a little lost and confused. We are all told that all is well but the trash dumps and landfills get fuller and fuller. We are told that companies are cleaning up the messes they have made in the past and trying to be better in the future and still our streams and rivers are full of PCB's and other carcinogens. Here in the South we see acres and acres of hardwood trees disappearing and in their place there are "pine tree deserts" where only pine trees for paper are allowed to grow and we are told that the forest is being replanted. We take from what is and give next to nothing but pollution and destruction back.
No we are not crazy but we have messed with Mother Nature and only Father Time will tell if we can fix it or not. Don't wait for the thunder and lightening!
