One of the first questions I typically receive when teaching a class is, "What is Karma, and how can I avoid it?" Now this is an interesting topic. For you see, too many people view Karma as 'bad.' There is nothing bad about Karma in all actuality,

Karma itself is neither positive nor negative. It is the sum calculation of energy, in either balanced form. Simply put, it is the result of previous acts or deeds, in the past or from previous lives. What you reap is what you sow and you get what you put out.

This is so very true of magick and life. As you know, the universe is energy. So therefore, the type of energy you decide to draw to yourself, or place out into the world, will ultimately come back to you, in a stronger form.

Why does it come back stronger? It has all that time, out in the timeless universe, to collect more of its kind, and build up a 'speed' so to speak. Hence, the three fold law of many religions. And the answer to getting out of it is simple. It is impossible to run from that which you create.

Your energy, your life lessons - that's Karma, plain and simple.

Now you ask, "Why is Karma important?" And I tell you that Karma is an important thing to consider when casting spells, living life and simply 'being.' Here's the kicker though� I don't want you to fear Karma... I want you to fear Karma.

Magick and Life is all about love, lessons and truth. Karma knows no right or wrong, only positive and negative energy. However, to 'fear' Karmic repercussions is not the correct attitude to take when casting spells or living your life.

Fear. Fear controls the masses; fear is a weight that ties you down to a mundane, non-enlightening existence. The ties that bind us, repression, fear, jealousy, anger, rancor, greed and more... must be severed. To live a life of positive growth towards enlightenment, we first need to recognize that which holds us back from that same growth.

To fear Karma would simply be an ineffective way to stunt your spiritual growth.

Now, I'm not telling you to ignore the fact that you will be paying (either positively or negatively) for your Karmic debts. What I am telling you, though, is that you should be 'aware' and not fear. For if you don't cast a certain spell just because you fear it, then you lose the point behind not casting to begin with.

Magick is about love and light, and when you have to doubt whether you should perform a certain ritual or any of life's acts� then not do it, simply out of fear� then you do not truly learn your lessons. Common sense, and the simple words harm none will guide you to a positive and healthy magickal life.

Don't allow fear to stop you from thinking what's positive and negative. And remember, there is no right or wrong. It's all about life's lessons. We all travel to this place to learn, and many of us return, time and again, until we get it right. So we never truly make mistakes. We simply learn that which we must know.

So now, think back for a moment, on a time you would say you made a big mistake. See this time in your mind. Did you learn a lesson from this? I guarantee that you did. And if you don't recognize it, you just may have to experience it again. Karma. It's coming back.

In all life, Karma is active and fulfilling debts both positive and negative continuously. However, when it comes to magick, it's in effect times three. I believe this is due to the fact that you are now in a position to consciously affect that universal energy. And by doing so, you have a larger responsibility to recognize that same energy that you release.

If you send good thoughts, positive energy will return to you. If you place negative thoughts, actions and energy, negative events and energies will return to you. This holds true with life as well, not just your spells and rituals.

Leading a positive and caring life will bring that same energy to you. Just think about the last time you were in a bad mood. How many other people, or how much of that negative energy did you see returned to you? No one knows how quickly Karma returns, or the length of time between Karmic lessons� but we do know � everyone has said, "I must have done something really bad in a past life to deserve this!"

I would like you to change your thinking� the next time something good happens to you say, "I must have done something really good in a past life!" See both sides of the coin.

In today's society, with the negativity, greed and hatred we see in the world, media and local lives we live � it is difficult at times to not think negative thoughts. If we think upon patriotism, and the fact that to be patriotic is to at times, hate� If we think upon those who are not like us, or oppose all that we do � the same energy builds. As a human being seeking enlightenment, and searching to better your own life, it is important to remember that all your energy is in constant movement. Every thought, action and choice will have an affect on the universal energy that it is made up of.

Living a balanced life, and releasing the negative aspects of personality and thought, will help to successfully create a better magickal pallet.

Now, I'm not telling you to be a Guru, or give up all your worldly possessions to begin a path of inner thinking. We all live in a world that revolves around money and possession. What I am saying is, balance.

When venting your anxieties and angers out, don't send them � banish or ground them. Too many times people vent their energies directly out into the world and towards other people. As a magician or spiritualist, it is important to remember that by doing so, not only are you harming others, you are harming yourself. Venting is a wonderful way to remove negative thoughts and energy from you, but you have to pay attention to where that energy goes.

Take a moment to hold a stone, place it all in an amethyst, and throw it away from you. Place your hands in dirt, or touch a tree and ask it to release your negative energy. Trust me, just a few simple steps when feeling that anger build up inside, or when you feel the need to complain about someone or even something� those steps will make all the difference.

Now how about those times you are doing everything in your power to be positive, sending out wonderful energy, minding your manners and being generally a 'good person' � and negative things are happening to you?

Think about this� it may not be Karmic debt being repaid.

There are so many lessons we choose to learn before we return to this plane of existence. Is it possible that you are a good person and knew that you could handle difficult situations because you are strong? Is it possible that you chose to come back and make your life a living hell? Yes on all accounts.

We've all heard someone say that good guys have no fun � and bad people always get the good things in life� now why is that? I believe that at times, positive people will have to endure difficult situations, because they are prepared to experience as many of life's lessons as they can handle within one life, knowing that they are capable of receiving greater rewards in the end.

Something I have always said� "Sometimes the path to the Light is through the Dark." This simply means that for us to realize what lesson we have to learn, we may sometimes have to go through difficult or desperate situations.

We all know that life can be difficult at times, but we often forget to 'live.' Try and remember that we are traveling through this world to learn lessons, and some of those lessons may not be pleasant. We truly wouldn't learn much if everything were 'picture perfect' all the time. Blaming those bad situations on Karma or on others will only help you to learn those lessons over again.

Take responsibility for the actions you take, and the life you live. You will feel better in the long run, and find that life isn't as negative as it seems to be at times. Try and remember something told to me� Worries, anger, regrets and vengeance� will it all honestly matter years from now? Will it all matter when we cross into the Summerland?

No. So live, now, not in the past or within your jealousy or regrets� Life is too wonderful to chain ourselves down.

I have heard of people trying to cast spells to waive their Karmic debt for a life or two. Not only is this a ridiculous notion, it's impossible. Energy is energy. No matter what spell you cast to block Karmic repercussions, you are sending out energy.

So if you create a spell so that you can harm, by not receiving the affects of Karma this life, well � that's negative energy � it will still return to you. On the other hand, just thinking about trying to 'get out of Karma' to try and avoid that which you have coming to you, is not very wise either.

Life is lessons, and we should face them with pride and dignity. For to learn a life's lesson and recognize it when you do, is a prideful gain. And you can expect to grow continuously.

Life is about growth and knowledge. Learn your lessons proudly, and you will be rewarded. You'll see� give it a try. So, basically � accept that you are here to learn.

Sometimes those lessons will fall harder than others. At times you will feel as though your previous life was that of an evil mastermind. At other times you will think you were a saint.

Knowing our past lives does help our acceptance of lessons in this life, but looking to the past to explain the present, will not accomplish much. Take each of life's lessons for what they are worth � a lesson to become closer to the divinity within.

For within us lies all the answers to the universe, and we chose the path we were on before we were born.

Know that, and you will have come one step closer to reaching your goals.
