The Circle of Life

After writing the story of my familiar Inchy for Witchvox, my life became hectic and I was unable to visit the website for a while. More than anything I miss the wonderful articles and learning about the Path. I will not again recite the story of finding Inchy but you can read about her from my article “Choosing a Familiar, ” on Witchvox.

Anyway, last year I lost Inchy to an unknown old age ailment. This is what happened:

I went out of town on Thursday and she appeared fine. I was not coming back until Sunday and my husband stayed home with the animals. By Friday he knew Inchy was in trouble and felt her time was coming to a close and did not want to disturb me on a trip I could not come home from. The entire time I was gone I had that unsure felling. I couldn’t put my finger on it and was not in a place where I could meditate or cast for answers. The dreaded feeling only grew as I headed for home.

I entered the house Sunday afternoon and heard the familiar Inchy bark. My husband was holding her on his lap and told me she had not eaten, moved or opened her eyes in two days. He could not believe she barked. I went over and took her out of his arms. Her eyes were open but so sad and stressed. I too knew at that moment her time was short. I took her outside to the backyard to see if she needed to use the restroom. She could barely hold herself up.

I walked back in with her and held her close for about 45 more minutes. I don’t know why I stood up with her but somehow I knew it was time. I began walking towards my bedroom and her favorite place (my bed) . She looked up at me and I heard the thank you from her heart. She then passed. I sat holding her and crying for hours.

My husband finally came in with her favorite blanket and asked if I wanted to bury her in it. As much as I will miss her smell and dog hair on the blanket I knew it needed to be with her body. Letting go was easier when placing her in the old blanket she loved.

Inchy now rests outside my bedroom window. I have been over there to visit once during the week but find the pain very great. This past Thursday morning I woke up crying and could not seem to get control of myself. I have lost a familiar before and I know it takes time to heal. I decided to get up early and check my email.

I checked my main account and found nothing new. I then checked my Witchvox account and discovered Inchy’s story had been published a month before. I had an unbelievable amount of email relating to the story of finding this old beautiful Chihuahua.

As I read, the pain in my heart lessoned and a feeling of peace overtook me. Witchvox members shared their incredible stories of their familiars and the laughter they got from my story of Inchy. The words thank you are just not enough to express how so many people could take time out of their day and send emails that would become such a blessing.

As Wiccans, we understand how the Wiccan Path circles around us. My soul called out and help came. Inchy knew I needed these words and her soul also asked for help in letting me know I was not alone. In one of the emails a lady told of the loss of two of her familiars and the heartbreak it caused but without knowing Inchy passed she wished me blessings and joy for my time with my familiar.

Someone else asked if I thought a horse could be a familiar. I hope my answer helped. Most of all people told me their animal stories and made me laugh as well as cry. Witches will always have a special bond with animals. Familiars come in all shapes, sizes and kinds. Familiars knew us from a past life; they are given the gift of memory while they give us the gift of completeness.

Familiars find us. Maybe in Inchy’s case she had another that passed and wanted me to feel her great love. I may not ever know the answers but I do know she loved me. I hope every Witch can find what I have even for such a short time.

I don’t mean to tell the story of Inchy’s passing to make anyone sad. I hope that everyone reading this can understand how unique this community of Witches is. We accept, love, share and give a place for all of us to learn and teach. We continue the circle of life and bring joy to the lives of others.

We are not alone; we share our faith and touch each other’s souls. Let us find peace within our hearts and stay attuned to earth and our path. Our coven is thousands strong and unstoppable.

We are a force of nature.

Sometimes we need something to make us realize how special we are. We are ridiculed and feared for our belief. So many of us (myself included) , were raised Christian but could not accept or have the faith needed to believe. Now we have found our belief and know in our hearts it is what we have always looked for.

Christians tell me of miracles.

I tell them of Majic.

I tell them of seeing gifts in everything around me and true Majic is watching a child being born, seeing the beauty of a butterfly on a flower, listening as the birds call and yes, even holding a familiar while they travel to the next life. Majic comes from within us and travels out to everything our energy touches.

I thank everyone that sent Majic my way. I am blessed.
