Nelson Henry White, whose magical name was Frater Zarathustra, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, October 29, 1938. He graduated from James B. Castle High School in Kaneohe, Hawaii in 1956, and served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in San Diego, California. While earning his A.A. degree in Electronics at San Bernardino Valley College in 1961, he was active in the San Bernardino County Sheriffâs Motorcycle Posse, as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, and also spent several years with the Civil air Patrol as Communications Officer of Search & Rescue Squadron 31, at Norton Air Force Base, California. After working several years in the electronics and defense fields, he returned to college and graduated from the University of Redlands in 1968 with a B.A. in Government & Public Administration. He then attended Graduate School, both at Redlands and at UCLA, where he received several teaching credentials. He was ordained as a Minister in 1968, and received his first Honorary Doctorat! e in 1969.
Dr. White was active in the Southern California occult scene for over twenty years, being instrumental in the formation and operation of several esoteric organizations and Magickal Orders÷most notably the Light of Truth Church. He participated in the Council of Themis, and was knighted by the Alter SouverŠner Templer Orden, based in Vienna, Austria.
Dr. White published, edited, and wrote numerous articles for a quarterly magazine of Ceremonial Magick, The White Light, for the entire 15+ years of its existence. He married Sergei Saint-Germain in 1972 and together they operated a Religious Supply and Book store in Pasadena for over seventeen years, until they divorced in 1992. During that time and after he wrote over 120 books on Magick and other topics. His writings were notable for his impatience with puffery and nonsense and his insistence on firm scholarship, self-discipline, and strong moral convictions.
Dr. White sang with The Richmond Choir, a German singing group. He taught in a number of Junior and Senior High School in both Southern and Northern California, received numerous Community Service awards, and was listed in Whoâs Who and Two Thousand Notable Americans, among others. In the 1990âs he worked at NASAâs Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, and began a new career as a realtor in El Sobrante, California. In 2002-03, he participated as a member of the Grey Council of mages and sages in the creation of the Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard (New Page Books, 2004).
Dr. White died of a heart attack on August 23, 2003, in El Sobrante. He is survived by his second wife, Sheila Ann Emery, whom he married in 1994. He will be missed by many friends and associates for his kindness, strong social conscience, his commitment to many worthwhile efforts, wide interests, and brilliant, exploring mind.
