Perfect Love and Perfect Trust

Much like the phrase "Blessed Be, " “Perfect Love and Perfect Trust” is often bantered about in some Craft communities without much thought given to its meaning. Perfect Love? What is Perfect?

In the tradition that I practice (the Druidic Craft of the Wise, or DCW), the realization of perfection is our only goal. The way I see it, we are all individual stars in an infinite galaxy. Each of us is created perfect. Perfection is the realization of our oneness with the entire universe. We are perfect at the core, yet we obviously don't express that perfection very well in this world.

We fight, abuse drugs, get depressed, treat each other as objects, gossip, eat foods that make us ill, poison our environment, stand around and watch as others starve and go homeless... the list goes on.

We are obviously far from expressing perfection in this world, but why?

In the Craft (at least in the DCW tradition), we define love as the absence of all tension. We can't get rid of the love within us, but we can block it from our awareness.

Tension in the body represents tension in the mind. Tension in the mind represents a lack of trust.

Perfect love is the force out of which we are created. There is nothing but love in the universe. Our minds have the ability to create, and we have the free will to create anything we desire.

This world is a representation of the way we think. When we think without love (which we are free to do), we are thinking in a manner contrary to the force of true creation. Anything that is not love is not of nature.

Since our thoughts are reflected back to us, what we experience when we think without love is an "unnatural" world. What this world would be like when seen through the eyes of love is unknown to us, as we have been taught and trained to think with tension and fear for eons.

This is the meaning behind the eastern concept that we live in a world of Illusion. Anything that is not love is unreal, but through the power of our minds we can make it seem very real. Love is real; everything else is illusion (albeit a strong and convincing illusion).

It is very difficult for us to relax. We think that we have to defend ourselves. We think we have to go out and make our lives work. We think we have to be "right."

The idea that we can simply trust in the love of the universe is very foreign to our thinking; yet this is exactly what we are required to do if we are to heal ourselves. It is not our job to create love, since love is the only thing that exists.

Yet perfect trust is a discipline that is our responsibility; perfect trust is our ability to let go our resistance to the force of love, which is all-pervasive. As we begin to have perfect trust in perfect love, we notice that there is an entirely different world behind the world we have always seen. This "new world" is not a different place, but it is a very different vision of the world.

What if everything we were ever taught about the world was wrong?

It is impossible for us to escape the illusion of this artificial world by ourselves. Our minds are so powerful that the illusion is just too convincing.

In Alcoholic's Anonymous, the alcoholic must come to this understanding before any progress can be made. It is no different for any of us.

First it is necessary that we recognize that we are insane; we are sick, and we are living in a sick world. We must come to the realization that we are powerless over the effects of our own thinking. We need a higher power, which can restore us to sanity.

It doesn't matter what we call this higher power, as long as we recognize this power as being perfect love. It is important that we understand that love is the teacher and we are the student. Love is the healer and we are the patients.

Einstein told us that we are not able to exit conflict from the level of consciousness that is the conflict. We must ask for a power outside of the closed thought system of our collective tension to teach us; and we must be RECEPTIVE to this teaching.

Perfect love and perfect trust must be practiced daily, as they run counter to everything this world holds valuable. Sitting for fifteen minutes a day practicing perfect love, without letting our minds wander off in a million different directions, is the medicine that heals.

Doing this is not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot of resistance to this practice for most of us. We have within us a pseudo self that treasures the illusion. It is important for us to question this self.

The Bible tells us "Perfect love casts out all fear." The fearful self does NOT want us to practice perfect love and perfect trust, as it knows it will then die.

Think of all the things we do in the name of "love." We run around like chickens with our heads chopped off trying to get more, do more, be more, and have more, in order that we can be happy, never realizing that the happiness we seek is within us already. We tell ourselves that we are trying to find love, when in effect we are keeping love at bay.

Love is omnipresent, all we need is to relax and trust in love's presence regularly.

Yet, this is the last thing we want to do.

The idea that we don't have to do anything at all sounds crazy, but it is our sick minds that need to be shaken up and dissolved! We think that our doing is power. Yet our doing, when it squelches our being, is the enemy to our true power.

Perfect trust in perfect love is a discipline. We must be vigilant in our discipline. This is the Holy Grail, the fountain of youth, the philosopher's stone, heaven, Avalon, or whatever name you choose to call it.

Practice 15 minutes every morning for 30 days of just being, and see what kind of a difference it makes. Relax your body and trust in the love of the universe. Gently bring your attention back to the silence within you every time your mind wanders.

You may feel like you are wasting your time and that nothing is happening, but I assure you that these precious moments are the most wise uses of your time that you have ever spent.

When we have perfect trust in perfect love, we are safe no matter what is going on in the world around us.

Perfect love cannot change. It is immortal. It is eternal.

When someone cuts you off on the freeway, or looks at you wrong, you have a power within you that is stronger than that hatred. When you have the desire to attack or defend yourself, you have the power within yourself to overcome.

No one is perfect in this world of illusion, yet perfect love sees through the illusion into the perfection that lies beyond. When we choose to see through the eyes of love, instead of seeing mean, nasty people, we see scared wounded people who need our love.

Love always wants to heal. Love always wants to forgive.

Love always pours out compassion onto the earth.

This is real. Everything else tension.

Did you ever notice that tension can be dissolved? Love cannot be dissolved. Love is what lies behind the tension. This means tension is false. It is artificial. We live in a tense world; therefore we live in an artificial world. This cannot be fully understood until we experience it by releasing tension on a profound level, and on a regular basis.

Remember that perfect love and perfect trust is a discipline, not just a phrase to use when we want to sound impressive at pagan gatherings. We always have opportunities to exercise this muscle, whether we choose to do so or not is up to us. We have free will and we have unlimited power.

Remember the Bob Dylan lyric "you have to serve somebody?" It is true. You always have perfect trust in something. Trust is an aspect of consciousness. It is always present.

We either have trust in love, or we have trust in our defenses. We have trust in love, or we have trust in what the world tells us. We have trust in the power of love, or we have trust in the power of a virus. We have trust in love or we have trust in fear.

Any moment we can choose to exist in perfect love, or in tension. Every moment we can choose to trust in the power of love, or trust in the power of fear.

Nothing can destroy love. It is fierce. It is the only thing that cannot be destroyed.

We believe that what we see with our eyes is real. What we feel with our bodies is real. What is "tangible" is real, yet all these things are temporary. Everything as experienced through the mortal body is MORTAL.

Love is a power behind the mask of mortality, and it lives on no matter what. When we know this, we understand how safe we really are. Nothing can touch us. What happens to our bodies, our houses, our possessions are totally irrelevant.

What matters is the love we choose to experience in every moment.

The true magic is that once we choose to make love our only priorities, the things in our mortal world tend to fall into place on their own. We no longer have to struggle to make things happen. We become magnetized to the things in the world which will serve us the most.

We become aware of true abundance (which is love), and that abundance is reflected in our experience of the world. But it is not the money, prestige, fame, ability, possessions, power, politics or any mortal experience, which is our goal. Our only goal is perfect love. The rest falls into place on its own.

This is the meaning of the phrase "Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and all else shall be added unto you." This is real magic. REAL magic is what works.

Love works. Everything else is a detour. Trust in love – Perfect love and perfect trust.

This is the message of the Craft, as I understand it. Simple? Yes.

Easy? Not always.
