A Witch's View of 2012

The Mayan Calendar and the year 2012 have been in the news a lot of late. Modern Witches and Pagans like any other group of free-thinking people have many theories on this subject. So here for you reading pleasure is another one. Hopefully many of you out there will agree with it-maybe. Besides to my way of thinking if you don’t agree with it or don’t have a personal theory then maybe this little hypothesis will peak your interest enough to look deeper into 2012 and the calendar and possibly form an opinion for yourself.

The year 2012, the Winter Solstice to be exact, is the end of the Mayan calendar; however my personal theory is that it is NOT the end of the world or humanity that so many people have chosen to predict. If you have studied even a small portion of the highly accurate calendar and decided to follow the cycle thought process that it uses you will conclude that 12-21-12 is the beginning of a new 5000+ year cycle. If you backtrack to the beginning of this almost epic cycle you will probably see as I have the birth of the Mayans and their great civilization. Their Creation Story.

It relates basically to humankind building a society where Mother Nature and humanity work in a harmonious balance one with the other. A mutually beneficial respect (mixed with a little fear and reverence) of Nature combined with the intelligence of the human brain. The Mayans believed that life was a circular cycle of birth-life-death-rebirth much the same way that most Witches and Pagans do today. Their calendar follows the circle pattern as well and each set of cycles eventually repeat themselves.

So based on this interpretation, Nature is now in a position where She will start to fix modern mankind’s abuse to Her. The natural warming cycle that man and his greenhouse gas contribution have accelerated will combine with stronger storms, more frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and more frequent and intensive solar activity. All of these natural actions have come in cycles that were originally measured in centuries and thousands of years before our industrial revolution of the last two centuries interfered. Add all of this with the return of a previously undiscovered 12th planet that will come close enough to Mother Earth to influence everything about Her with its gravitational pull. I think all of this will change our current way-of-life, don’t you?

If solar activity starts causing entire electrical grids to fail, melting polar ice causing the rise of the oceans and any river systems that start or end in the ocean will cause major flooding along the coasts and river basins. Please remember that the world’s major financial districts are all along these same waterways and coasts. Most, if not all, corporate nerve centers -and their computer mainframes that are stored in massive basements below water levels- also reside in these metro areas. It’s my understanding that no matter how many backups and other redundant programs you have; if you add massive amounts of water and computer power sources together they don’t mix very well.

Now you have no power, which means no worldwide web. Without the internet- even for a period as short as 48 hours- our current way of conducting business STOPS- literally. If you add all of these situations happening in rapid succession or simultaneously – the floodwater, no electricity, no clean water and a shortage of food it looks to me like we’re done. Our current lifestyles don’t allow for these kinds of interruptions in the day-to-day working of anything we do.

No you say-well ask someone that has been through Katrina, Andrew, any one of the West Coast earthquakes or someone who has helped with relief efforts in Pakistan or Haiti. Every one of the world’s governments, corporations and even John Q. Public relied on the Internet and are connected to it in some way. No Internet=no clean up crews and no relief efforts. No anything—Life just stops.

As the days turn to months, those capable of terror in the pursuit of power and greed over their little part of the world will pray on those in the cities and suburbs that are defenseless. The sad tale here is that with our society in its present state a catastrophe of this kind requires only 30-60 days to accomplish this new outcome. Those with a thirst for power and the people they lead will quickly lose whatever shreds of humanity, if they had any to begin with.

Outside the major metro areas, Nature won’t take long to reclaim what is rightfully Hers; weather patterns will continue to change, people who weren’t prepared will continue to struggle to survive in a state of chaos that they wouldn’t have even imagined in their former lives. The only ones who might have a chance of surviving long enough to build and learn to maintain a more balanced world will more than likely be those of us that have a more earth-based belief system. Because of our beliefs we will be able to establish settlements or “tribes” that can sustain themselves in a more balanced, harmonious way with Nature.

So you’re probably saying that none of this will happen; the scientific community says that all of this (if it does happen) is centuries down the road. I’m sorry; I watch and read about these scientific studies and the research projects. There seems to be a flaw or two with their ideas as well. First, scientists, like doctors and many of the other professions tend to specialize in certain areas of their respective fields. People and companies that are looking for the results that will support their specific needs supply the funds used to research these areas. So any information or results they don’t like are thrown out as un-usable or declared as false.

Second, and maybe more importantly, is that because of their own specialization they’re to busy competing for more funding and the need to be considered right within their community. So their research lacks overall cohesion-they miss the overall big picture. Too many of them 2+2=3. If you consider the larger picture and start putting ALL of the information from ALL of the different sources together you begin to see that not only is this new cycle possible, it’s probable.

Most Witches and Pagans typically read watch and research not only the information on their own beliefs, but that of the other religions to find what things those religions have borrowed from ours and made their own. We do this to learn as much knowledge as we can to further ourselves and our beliefs in a balance between Nature and ourselves. It is this need for knowledge and this striving for a better and more balanced way of life that leads me to my question for those of us who tend the bubbling cauldrons of our sacred circles.

Is it possible for a group of Witches and Pagans to bring their beliefs and skills together into a settlement or Tribe in such a way that all within the group will survive to pass on our knowledge of Nature and other eco-friendly technology, and our belief in the Lord and Lady to obtain and maintain a harmonious balance among all of the beings who inhabit this being called Mother Earth?

From my perspective I say YES. We as Witches and Pagans maybe the only individuals who can bring skills in solar and wind power, herbal and clinical medicine animal husbandry of not only domestic but wild animal kind with the respect and creativity that will allow humanity to again CO-EXIST with Mother Earth.

Let me know what you believe, I’d like to know. Knowledge gained and passed on is the only real way to understand each other and Nature Herself.

In Their Names-Blessed Be!
