Their containers, Their Right to Choose!
It has been a very interesting week, hasn't it? Thirty-nine people committed suicide in an affluent neighborhood in California. They believed they were destined to join the travelling companion of the Hale-Bopp comet, and they carefully planned their departure from planet Earth with precision and grace. But the broadcast media, who no longer deal in the goals of journalism (like truth and freedom of expression), but in entertainment and mind control, have decided that these deaths point to something very, very wrong with our country.
In a country as spiritually conservative as the United States, the average Joe (or Jane) usually does not spend much time coming to terms with death; which is why people like Jack Kevorkian are portrayed as monsters. And so the media plays on these fears, telling us that people like the Heaven's Gate family were all somehow forced to do what they did by some evil charismatic leader.
In other words, ignoring all evidence to the contrary, they are being labelled a "cult." And although the most significant cult-based mass "suicides" in recent years (including Jonestown and Waco) have been Christian-based, somehow the media has decided they must implicate all minority or "fringe" religions, including Paganism, as having major "cult" potential. They are also capitalizing on Heaven's Gate's cyberspace activities as a way to demonize the Internet, since it is the one form of communication and information they (the broadcast media and the government; same thing) cannot control! Talk about manipulation...
Read on for some guest editorials from the Witchvox Staff and their friends. We felt compelled to share our thoughts on this week's events, and the implications for our ongoing fight for religious freedom.
