This week I offer, as promised, yet another obscure cover tune (meaning that I didn't write it) as part of our music give-a-way. Although this is NOT a Pagan tune it was finished up during the sessions for my "Celtic Feast of the Dead" CD. This tune was blast to record and sing.
This is Massive was written by Crowded House drummer Paul Hester and I am not sure that it ever made any albums, BUT CH often opened with this tune on thier second tour and it was sung live by lead singer, and our hero, Neil Finn.
Lyrically, I haven't a clue as to what Paul is trying to say here but it's another one of those "attitude songs" and does have some very cool lines in it.
Special Guest: A co-worker of mine, Reeves Gabriels was known as the "hottest" guitar player in Boston, and it was clear to us all that he was destine for greatness. These days, Reeves is a full-fledged rock star. In fact he has been David Bowie's guitarist and co-writer for most of past 10 years.
The Recording: The tune was just a cheesy "Roland tr-505" drum machine pattern and a simple bass line when I got Reeves over to work his magick. I asked Reeves if he would toss down a "rock star solo" on a tune i was doing and he said "sure". One night, after we closed the store (E.U. Wurlitzer Music in Boston) he showed up, I put the track on, he listened to it once, grabbed a guitar off the rack (an Ibanez Steve Vai Model) plugged it into a "Proco Rat" and just wailed. Incredible! He did this in two takes and then added his magick to another tune call "Key to Love" ... it was all done in about 40 minutes. Thank YOU Reeves.
I let this Bass/drum/guitar piece sit for a few years and in 1995 while i was recording CFOTD decided to have some fun and finish up this tune by adding 2 acoustic guitar parts and vocals. I am very happy with the feel of this tune thanks TO the acoustic rhythm parts... The Vocals were a stretch for this alto pipe but it came out acceptable enough. Take this tune as my gift to you and in the spirit in which it was created.
