October '97 - A Very Busy Month for Witchcraft

Update 10/21/97: Wren and I are back from an incredible trip to Texas. The land was amazing and the people were full of awesome love and light. The big thrill was to finally meet so many Witches that we have grown to love and respect over the internet for the last 18 months. You just can't beat that eye contact. And the music was incredible, on Friday night we got to soak in the spiritual depth and beauty of Lisa Thiel and then on Saturday, the unique melodic rock of Velvet Hammer (sans drummer for this gig but they still ruled!). Three woman that can ALL sing with incredible phrasing and soul. Thank You Texas Pagan Awareness Online for making this all possible. We will be indebted to Lhiannon and Jeannette for many moons to come.

After taking Monday as a day off we have (after several grueling hours) finally caught back up with email. The state pages are all up to date with dozens of new events and over 100 new Witch/Pagan contacts that signed up in the last 3 days.

Blessed Be Well!

The Witches' Voice
October 21st., 1997 c.e.
This JUST IN: (10/21/97): We have just been informed that one of our community's most respected Witches, Rev. James D. Stevens of Kansas city, Mo. is in critical condition in a local hospital. At this point we ask that you light a candle to the spirit of Shanem Falconfire

JD's family and friends ask that you do NOT call the hospital at this point (they have been swamped with calls). We will keep you informed at this end as more information develops. We project for the best... We love you J.D.

This Week...

Givers, Takers and the Pagan Web
Part II - "Look and Feel" & The Looters...

In this version of my randomly penned "Notes from the WebMaster" I would like to address two issues of grave concern; Presenting someone elses work as your own (the lameness of subtractive webweaving) and Bandwith Stealing. Theft is never a pretty sight, but from our own "brothers and sisters" of the Craft? "So NOT it be".

A must read... Creativity and the Pagan Web a Guest Rant by Jorah.

Samhain '97

"Serving the Magickal, Occult, and
Pagan Earth Community."
The Pagan WebCrafters' Assoc. Rules!

PWA is a HOT, new and loose coalition of WebCrafters from the Pagan/Occult Web... PWA already offers a sterling site and an outstanding reference for all things related to your web weaving needs and related questions. Hosted by the incredible Craig of, PWA features the work of some of the best of the Pagan Web. The Witches' Voice is both proud and thrilled to be a part of this wonderful venture. If you are a Pagan web designer you will want to join this group for sure...

Truly serving the Magical community - So Mote it Be!

New Pages this week: The Witches' Voice Inc. is proud to kick off our Samhain Media/Awareness campaign for 1997. This "Annual Opportunity" to educate the world on modern day Witchcraft is something that we must REALLY be ready for. The Press does seek out "Real Witches" this time of year and what and how you communicate to them can dramatically effect the accuracy of what we really do. Many of you are "pros" at talking to the media. Many others have never had the experience. The Samhain campaign is starting to quickly take shape with 4 powerful reference pages by Wren, Peg and Jane. Click HERE for more details

Tons of new stuff and enhancements throughout the entire site. Wren has added some critical documents to detail the Religious Rights of Canadian Witches in our printable White pages section. We also feature two new essays in our Voices of Witches' section. The Witches of the World section has exploded with listings of new people and events. To address the numerous email we get about "Religious Hate Sites" we now have both a listing and a submission form so that you can help. We have added many new articles, lyrics and essays to our Samhain Pages.

A Christian Nation? Won't happen? Don't be too sure about that....Judge Roy Moore is a man on a mission. Moore wants to bring his case to the Supreme Court. His case? To have the Court once and for all decide whether the United States is indeed a "Christian Nation" or not. Click HERE for the Moore on Moore

The Ethics of the Witches' Voice... or how we do business. The Witches' Voice is a people oriented organization dedicated to fostering deeper understanding and cooperation amongst both the members of the Pagan community and society as a whole. Do we have ethical standards? Always have and always will. Click HERE for details

THE Occult Search Engine...

Wiccan Chat Boards: Goddess are these popular - Many Witches/people simply love to chat. These boards run the gauntlet of human behavior from, lurkers, teachers, healers and are considered "homes" by many. As promised last week the Witches' Voice now offers an extensive list of Chat Boards on the Pagan Net. One of our many favorites is the incredible Witch/Pagan Message Boards. At present the Witches' Voice has no plans to reopen a chatboard. However, do know that we have many hot interactive irons in the fire.

YOURS for the Taking: Since day one the Witches' Voice has offered just about everything on this site for the taking. The only exception is our email list. All we ask is that you simply email us and ask permission and make sure you credit any authors or artists were appropriate. For more info on Internet Ethics see Fritz's rant from June entitled: Givers, Takers and the Pagan Web.

Wren has just put up five new documents in our White Pages section pertaining to Wiccan discrimination in schools. Use them as templates for in YOUR local education and awareness campaigns. Also included are How to talk ABOUT the Radical Right and The Equal Access Act - Your rights as a student

Samhain is a wonderful time of the year for Witches. So as we head towards the end of the season cycle it's time for one and all to reflect on the year that has past and what we have learned. Wren and I have indeed learned much this year and are very excited about the future of the Modern Witchcraft movement. Allow us to use this forum to wish one an all a wonderful Samhain season. We will see some of you at CMA in Texas in a couple of weeks and we will be back home in time to celebrate Samhain in Boston.

The WVOX Essay Series... 2 essays for October '97
Each month The Witches' Voice will publish essays from Witches, Wiccans and Pagans from around the world. We would love to hear from you! Check out our Editorial Submission Guidelines page for a submission guidelines and topic list and other details.(Luna graphic by Steven Craig Hickman)

  October 1997 Money is Magickal
  October 1997 Fear NOT!

Witches of the World: Introduced earlier this month, the rewrite of this section has become very popular and almost 2,000 Witches are using this section to network and celebrate Wiccan Events in their area. Individual listings now contain an optional profile, sun sign, personal WEB link and a sponsorship celebration. Every Contact that is listed on these pages is verified on a monthly basis via a WitchVox global emailing. Due to fundamental database technology, you will NEVER see an outdated event, it's all time stamped and automatic. (Goddess bless the Macintosh). All 70 of our state/prov pages are updated daily and are constantly being fine-tuned for accuracy. The next module planned for these pages is a listing of Witch/Occult shops in YOUR town. We get numerous requests for this and look for this new feature on your state/prov. page sometime in October. Introduced just this week is a breakout of Major Pagan Festivals due to national interest. List YOUR Witch Event Today!

Check you what's happening in YOUR state today!

A Quest for Unity: Witch hugs to all of you that have participated in this Quest to date. Look for the final 3 or 4 surveys over the next couple of months and a complete analysis by the end of the year. Many of the responses to the Hotter questions have been inspiring and in some cases quite a surprise. Thank you to the WebCrafters out there that have featured the Unity graphic on their page. Click HERE for the Witches Voice Quest for Unity Main Index. Quik Note: in order to speed up the posting of YOUR comments, we have bagged the time consuming spell check and are tossing the comments up as entered. Try and look beyond the occasional typo and celebrate the content therein. Just up (9/23/97) are the absolute Latest Comments on our latest survey Witchcraft in the Public Eye.

How IS the Witches' Voice doing? Thanks to recent sponsorships we are still alive and on the net. Our current balance is on the happy side of zero (around $380.00). Do note that 100% of all sponsorship donations go directly to serving the Wiccan community via this website, through legal and financial assistance and mailings to schools and local officials. Wren, myself and the rest of the staff take zero financial compensation for the work we do here. We can only do this with YOUR support. If you enjoy this website, like what we do, believe in what we do or want to help your brothers and sisters of the craft, become a sponsor of the Witches' Voice. If you are too poor to help, we do understand, do know that even a book of stamps can help. For more info surf to our sponsorship page and find out how you can become an official Sponsor of the Witches' Voice. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Just In... Jane's Tidings for This Quarter!
The Witches' Voice is once again honored to feature the latest installment of the fine reporting and gathering work of Jane from Maine. Jane is a Witch and journalist who lives in Maine with four cats (black, of course). Many of you already know her from her famous "Jane's Tidings" column in both Harvest and Tides magazines. Feel free to send clippings, reports, updates, criticism and lavish praise to Jane, P.O. Box 64, Portland, ME 04112, or by simply E-Mailing her. Thank YOU Jane for the work YOU do.

SILVER RAVENWOLFE ON PBS!: PBS will be airing a special on Halloween the week of October 26 through 31 on their Religion and Ethics News program. Please check your local listing for specific air time and date. The PBS crew spent an entire day filming at Silver RavenWolf's house and at Pinchot State Park for this program; however, we expect only 3 to 5 minutes of actual air time. The production crew treated us very well, and we look forward to a positive exposition.

Nine Black Forest members were present for this daytime filming. We chose the hours of light, rather than than the hours of darkness to make a positive impression for the viewing audience. Lady BreidFox of New York wrote a ritual specifically for television viewing, and was kind enough to join us throughout the filming. We would like to publicly thank her for driving all the way to Pennsylvania at very short notice to provide magickal and moral support to our Clan, and to the magickal community in general.

We ask that all individuals receiving this post to pass the information on to as many people in our community as you can via e-mail, word of mouth, phone conversations, and letters.

We also ask that after viewing the show, if you would write positive letters or send an e-mail to the producer to let her know that you are out there, and that you care. During the harvest season, we are often fodder for the media, and this woman handled the shoot with a great deal of professionalism and kindness. I am sure that even a small thank you note will make her feel that her efforts were appreciated.

I think that PBS and Ginny need to know just how many of you there are "out there".

Steve McManus On The Radio!: On October 31st, 1997, WMWV Radio 93.5 FM in Conway, NH will be conducting an interview with Steve McManus aka Amorgen on their daily "Drive Time" program at 5:00 pm EDT.

George Cleveland, the host of the show, is interested in providing a balanced and informative presentation on real Witches. Steve will be speaking about our true nature vs. the myths and stereotypes which we find so prevalent during this holiday.

In preparing for this interview, Mr. Cleveland asked for some reading material that might be available. He was provided with Scott Cunningham's "Wicca: Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" and "Living Wicca: A Further Guide", as well as Silver RavenWolf's "To Ride a Silver Broomstick" and the latest copy of the "Witches Almanac."

As you may know, these particular publications are written in a friendly, straightforward manner which allows for faster assimilation of the concepts into one's thoughts.

Mr. Cleveland has expressed his admiration and intrigue with regard to our religion. It should prove to be an interesting show and at least one of the non-evangelical Christian leaders in the area reacted positively to news of the upcoming show.

WMWV covers northern and central New Hampshire as well as parts of Maine and Vermont.

HOT Product: Powerful New Goddess Calendar...
New ... An unusual full color fine arts calendar featuring Jill Solomon's sculpted clay goddess figures and Sam Laundon's photographs. "Whimsical, haunting, mysterious, spiritual, and funny".

"The monthly images on this beautiful calendar evoke a spiritual presence and a connection with god and goddess. I recommend this colorful delight to all who desire a visual closeness to Spirit!" - Richard Fuller (Senior Editor-Metaphysical Review)

Through the power of computer graphics, sculpted clay figures by Jill Solomon and photographs by Sam Laundon unite to create a series of startling images - whimsical, haunting, mysterious, spiritual, and funny. Jill's goddess-like figures evoke ancient rites, yet appear without explanation in a modern landscape, a flower, a contemporary archway - settings captured or constructed through Sam's photographic lens. You can view and purchase this calendar online at
