Christianity YES... Wicca NO!

A Great Beltaine/Samhain Week for So Many!

While many pagans celebrated Beltane on May 1st, the traditional date of Beltane is not the same as its astrological date. This date may vary by a day or two depending on the year and is determined by the date on which the sun is at 15 degrees Taurus (usually around May 5th). British Witches often refer to this date as Old Beltane or "Beltane Old Style".

Many pagans have their festivals and celebrations planned for this week and so if you know some pagans who celebrate "Old Style", you may yet be able to get in another Maypole Dance...

Inside word is that Beltaine in Kentucky went off with out a hitch. Worldtree Inc. Of Arizona will hold their Worldtree Beltaine '99 Festival this coming weekend. We also present to you some wonderful Beltaine essays...

Wren's Nest... Beltaine in Kentucky!

CHRISTIANS PREACH AS PAGANS ENJOY MAY DAY FESTIVAL-By Frank E. Lockwood, Lexington Herald-Leader

DENNISTON -- Praise the Lord in the Bible Belt and nobody thinks twice.

Praise the goddess and folks get riled.

That's what happened yesterday as about 75 pagan May Day revelers danced, beat drums, chanted and meditated on a hilltop Menifee County farm. They were greeted by a dozen Christians offering free soft drinks, fried chicken and a message: Repent.

Members of Louisville's Evangel Life Christian Center opened a "welcome center'' and hoisted a banner near the festival grounds urging the festival-goers to worship ``the Lord your God'' and offering to introduce them to Jesus Christ.

At the welcome center, friendly Christians said the pagans are hell-bound.

AND from the Festival itself: This just in from Shadowcatcher and Family:

"Just returned from Beltane in Kentucky! A wonderful first event in an absolutely beautiful setting. Participants from age 6 months to 70 or so years. Atleast five states were represented and my future son in law was so impressed by his first steps down the Wiccan path that he is searching for the next event we can attend.

Our group included me, age 52, daughter Abby, 23, her fiance, 27, and my two youngest sons 11 and 14. I hope the local folks relax a little after the uneventful weekend. The setting is just too good to lose because of intolerance and preconceived misconseptions."

An Interview with Ellen Evert Hopman The Wiccan/Pagan Times was pleased to have the chance to talk to Ellen Evert Hopman, author of People of the Earth: The New Pagans Speak Out. The interview is a rather wide ranging one that covered not only Ms. Hopman's earliest spiritual experiences but brings us all the way up to her involvement with ADF and the Pagan Leaders List. Ms. Hopman frankly shares her thoughts on where the Pagan movement is now and what the future might hold. For those who want to see what kind of person lives beyond the book jacket then this interview will certainly open your eyes as to who Ms. Hopman is and the spiritual life that she leads. Visit the Wiccan/Pagan Times for this interview.

The Beltaine Edition of the Coventry Call - is now online!

This just in from Maurice: This Sabbat's Coventry Call...Junberries, humor, WADL needs reps, synchronicity and Native American parallels from Dr. A. C. Ross ("Ehanamani"), the Dr . Laura flap and more!

Now in 2 flavors: frames and no frames.-- The Witches of Coventry Greens

Judicial Gay Bashers : It’s now time for me to get down to the nitty gritty, something that I really wanted to avoid. However, something is rotten in the state of Texas. I mainly speak of the political system that is attempting to violate every aspect of human rights, whether your Gay, or Straight, this will affect you.

A Personal Note Update: Bless you all for your patience with us this past week. It was a week of challenges for sure. The company I work for did get sold to Sam Ash Music. This high stress week climaxed with a work day that went from 6:00am Thursday to noon the next day. I am a work-a-holic and typically put in 16 hours every day, but this 30 hour stint left me a zombie. Thank the Goddess for the beautiful Wren and her awesome healing powers. Yesterday, I spent 6 hours, trying to catch up on Email, I am getting there and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding

Doing this weeks update was a mad scramble... We still have much to get up on the site, so look for updates on this page throughout the next few days.

Have a safe and magical week everyone!

Always in your service,

The Witches' Voice

LAST Month's Highlights...
Oh my Goddess, What has happened here?

The event that transpired in Littleton, Colorado this past Tuesday afternoon left so many of us in a state of shock and disbelief. Our society held up the mirror and the sight was not a pretty one. Desperate for a quick answer (any answer), fingers were pointed at the parents, the cops, video games, the school officials, the jocks, the Goth movement, the internet, German music and of course the easy in which they armed themselves to the teeth. It turns out there was NO easy answer to this one. In fact speculation was all we had. Like all factions of our society, the Pagan community scrambled to speculate on the net and on the phone.

Knowing that 2 dozen kids got gunned down and witnessing the non stop coverage of a million refugees fleeing Kosovo has been a very humbling experience. Most of the "problems" in the Pagan community and in our society at large, pale by comparison. Most of us, affluent enough to own a computer, REALLY do have a good life. We have homes, cars, jobs, food and many wonderful friends. Recent events in the news should be a sobering call for us to stop and smell the roses and to be thankful for what we DO have.

The Combine High school issue is not specifically a Pagan issue but it was a social issue that our community could not ignore. The day after the shooting Wren posted her thoughts based on her own reaction...

"...The tragedy that occurred at Columbine High School yesterday affected us here at TWV very deeply. Horror, depression, outrage, shock and disbelief became intermingled with empathy, compassion, tears and sorrow as the scene unfolded before our eyes.

The pagan community has a very large number of healers and empaths. Witnessing such events-even those thousands of miles away-can cause certain reactions in such people. They become distressed, anxious, sad, depressed. They can also feel guilty..." - (for the rest of this editorial Click Here)

Email... Wow did we get email on this one. Dozens of pieces from Pagans trying to sort this out in their own minds. As of this writing, you can find a couple of them by clicking here We may feature more of your thoughts as this week progresses and as time allows (see personal note below).

Other notes of interest...

Searching for a Soul-Mate

Witches, Wiccans and Pagans are "breathing" all over each other! <grin>. The response to our call for the young Pagan perspective on searching for a soul mate was wonderful.

It took this Webweaver 42 years to find his soul-mate. Wren and I met in a Witch Shop (just before we started WitchVox) and quickly fell in love. We know that we are indeed soul mates and constantly thank the great ones for the gift of each other. It is our belief that there is someone for everyone. Finding this special someone is where the magic lies. It is great pleasure that we present to you...

Something's Burning... and it must be LOVE! Barbie and Ken? Buffy and Angel? What would be your ideal romantic relationship? What traits are important? What do you look for in a boyfriend/girlfriend? Would he/she have to be pagan? What has worked out-and been doomed-in your previous romances? Have you-would you?-rely on magick to attract a soulmate? Anything that your would-be soulmate should know about what would make you sit up and take notice in case he/she may read this? (Ya never know!)

Searching for a Soul-Mate sure did stir the cauldron! We are proud to present to you 7 essays from Pagan Teens of the World. Pages... ONE - TWO - THREE - FOUR - FIVE - SIX - SEVEN

Divination... Do's and Dont's (2) by Ryan Hopkins, Robyn Greene & Eurus Windrider

Where You can Find Truly Inspiring Creations for YOUR Magic!

As I stated above, Wren and I met in a Witch Shop (CrowHaven Corner - in Salem) while doing work for Laurie Cabot. From time to time Wren and I summarize the pages viewed (over the past two years) in different sections of the Voice to get an overall feel as to where you are going and what you like. Last night we did this for our Pagan links section and were quite surprised to discover that Pagan Online Shops was the #2 hit page (#1 was the various USA crafted sites from A-Z) with 29,027 hits since we launched this site.

WitchVox has celebrated the Pagan shops both on and off line since our site launch in '97. Sadly our listings have grown TOO large (176 online shops and 549 local shops) to be easily digestible. For months we have been promising the vendors and crafts-people that we want to find a way to better promote their work (lack of time is always our biggest frustration). We DO know that is hard to make a living selling this type of merchandise. The Staff at WitchVox encourages you to support our community shops both on and off line.

WitchVox IS a Commercial Free Zone! We are adamant about maintaining our NO advertising stance. WHY? Several reasons really but the most fundamental one is that we have no desire to be in anybody's "back pocket". We are not obligated to ANY advertisers. This gives WitchVox the freedom to present products, shops, Festivals and workshops to YOU based solely on their community value or interest. In the past year we have been "courted" by several major retailers and distributors that have offered us substantial cash to advertise their products. Our simple two word response is a polite - NO THANKS.

That said, we can and will promote Pagan products with YOUR needs and desires in mind. If we think it's cool, we just might "turn you on to it".

So what ARE we planning? Many things actually. Just this weekend we broke out the physical shops from the events and shops pages and now list the Pagan Shops in YOUR town on 120 separate State/Province/Country pages. We also plan on breaking up our listings of Pagan Products online so that you can better search for that magical tool. Several volunteers have offered to pen articles on Ethical Pagan retailing (what to look for) and tips for safe online purchasing. Please know that you don't have to run a festival to do a review of one (in fact we'd rather YOU do the review) This Week we also broke out festival reviews into THEIR own chapter called Pagans festivals of Planet Earth. We are considering many other suggestions that we've received by concerned Vendors and customers over the past year. As always, we welcome YOUR thoughts on this.
