Happy Lughnasadh Everyone...

Plants are "setting their seed" already for the next year as the cycle of Nature continues. The Sun (Son) still burns brightly, but already the passing of the days begins to herald the coming of autumn. The young animals are now almost full grown and our plans-planted with high expectations in the spring- are beginning to come to fruition.

July was an extremely Eventful Month that sadly included some awful times for many. Mercury (finally) goes direct on August 5th (10:20 p.m. EST) and after some typical residual effects, things should stabilize by the weekend. Thank the Goddess!

We have much info to pass along this week and have cleaned the slate (on this page to do it). Due to the heavy action on our past home pages we've made the decision to archive this page monthly... Look for monthly WitchVox home pages (for 1999) to be up by mid week. July's homepage is linked at the bottom of this page.

We kick things off with a celebration of a TV special that has a real nice segment on the Modern Witch.

The E Channel Gives Us 6 Powerful Minutes:
One of the best Witch/Wiccan Profiles to date.

Phyllis Curott, Wiccan priestess, lawyer and pagan author (Book of Shadows) was a featured guest on Entertainment Television's special program, "Hollywood Spirituality." Phyllis discussed the rise of Wicca and Goddess worship and spoke of some of the reasons that so many people are attracted to pagan paths.

Phyllis and her friends also were filmed conducting a beautiful candle ritual for peace. One of our best pagan spokespeople of today, Phyllis Curott is representative of the many pagan professionals who are coming out of the broom closet and into mainstream recognition. Good job, Phyllis!

Pictured just above is Phyllis Curott (web site: Book of Shadows) and to just below the beautiful Raven Mounauni of Raven's Flight North Hollywood, California.

If you missed it: E! Entertainment Television (Web Site: www.eonline.com)

Hollywood Spirituality: (Airs again: Aug. 7th: 8 p.m.; Aug. 8th: 3 p.m.) As the millennium approaches, "God is in" and everyone is searching for meaning beyond the material--even in materialistic Hollywood. It's now chic in Tinseltown to have a spiritual path that goes beyond mainstream religion. Hollywood Spirituality is a one-hour look at celebrities' search for meaning in the esoteric spiritual disciplines of yoga, kabbalah, witchcraft, Buddhism and alternative forms of healing.

Frank Dalton Update: (8/1/99) This just in from Betsy Ashby:

"Frank is out of Intensive care! {insert happy dance here} They might be moving him to a rehab facility in Connecticut real soon. Cate is spending her first night away from the hospital since Frank was taken ill. She will be back camped out in his room tomorrow. That Lady sure is something!

When Frank was admitted, Cate had to explain his religion was Wicca, and stated that he did not wish to be baptized or receive any other Rites. As we became fixtures in the waiting room, we noticed this short little Catholic Priest making rounds in Intensive Care twice a day. He always smiled and had a nice word or two to say. On day four or five he came up to me and said "Hello, I understand the Daltons worship a Nature Religion and I was wondering if you are their Clergy?" he then said "We have a private lounge and Chapel for Clergy where you can rest and reflect; make yourself a sandwich or make phone calls in private. If you like I could show you where it is".

I was right stunned. For some reason (maybe my Pentacle and other jewelry??) he thought I was Cate's "Clergy" and he was offering me the resources the hospital has for their Priests. He even told me I could get a free parking pass in the Clergy Lounge. Not exactly the welcome a Pagan usually expects from a Catholic Priest. I thanked him profusely and explained that I was just Cate's friend but that I would pass the message on to Gretchen, who is Cate's Clergy. He gave me his card to give to Gretchen.

The whole exchange was so unusual and so unexpected, I'm still thinking about this. It gives me a real warm fuzzy feeling to have our Faith accepted like that by a Faith that used to use us as kindling. Some of these Christians really are backing off their "worship our God of Love or we'll kill you" campaign.

There is a fund going for Cate and Frank up at Brushwood. Anybody who feels inclined to send any monetary help (and they can sure use it) should make checks payable to Cate Dalton and mail to: Brushwood 8881 Bailey Hill Rd., Sherman NY 14781 Attn. Teresa Barney

The Blair Witch Project - A WitchVox Review 7/30/99

After a full moon cycle of hype the Blair Witch Project opened in most major theatres around the US this weekend. The Witches' Voice has no official statement on this film at the present time but our media liasion is clearly a fan of not only the concept but the film itself. This week we present Peg Aloi's review as well as ask for YOUR thoughts on Blair Witch. Did you see it? Did you like it? Were you offended?

Astrological Almanac: What IS happening with the Planets and the Stars? A few weeks back we were made aware that our good friend Michael Pendragon (who is pictured with his beautiful lover Therese Devoe on this weeks WitchVox cover page) of Salem, Mass. does powerful bi-weekly interpretations over at the Triplemoon Witchware. Wren and I have known Michael for close to a decade and stand humbly in the presence of Michael's Astrological and psychic reads. This Astrological Almanac is a must bookmark for those that want to keep in touch with Astrological information on a regular basis.

Avatar Rumors UNFOUNDED: Why anyone would simply make up vicious lies is incomprehensible to us. AvatarSearch's ethical stance has never been in question by us. We choose to use our busiest page to help set the record straight. We offer you this statement from Reverend Bob

"I've been informed by respected members of our community that there is a rumor being passed around currently that AvatarSearch is requiring linkbacks for inclusion in the search engine. This is categorically untrue.

We have also been informed that there is a rumor going around that AvatarSearch is also "selling keywords" for the search engine; nothing could be further from the truth. AvatarSearch has not nor will it ever do such a thing, and rumors of this nature damage our community and the trust we have worked extremely hard to develop.

Sincerely,
Robert Furtkamp

C.O.G. Kicks off Pagan Census: The first one out of the gate (that we are aware of) with a y2k census that INCLUDES questions about religion is the Covenant of the Goddess Organization. Those of you that have visited the CoG site in the past few months have, no doubt, noticed a dramatic facelift that is nothing short of stunning. The new CoG Webweaver is one talented entity and has crafted much magic with CoGweb 2.0. WitchVox encourages all to surf over to the CoG Web Site to be counted on this census.

Related Note #1: There has been email circulating for about two months asking pagans to remember to state Pagan, Witch or Wiccan on the National census... This *would* be a good idea IF there were any questions about religion. Truth is, there won't be and hasn't been since the 50's. If you see this email go around please help and clarify this critical detail to those that send it.

Related Note #2: As promised, WitchVox will be repeating our Quest for Unity Surveys of 97 (See our Q.F.U. archives for the results) in the next couple of months. They will be a total rewrite and contain 6 separate surveys to help get a better idea of what the community is, and is thinking as we approach the millennium.

WitchVox Spammed Again: This week another member of our community chose to ignore all warnings to the contrary and stole close to a hundred email addresses from our Alabama and California pages. Although WitchVox offers numerous ways to list and promote websites, groups and events, this person didn't bother to list in those places. We fired off a quick "cease and desist" as part of an email of apology to ALL of those that were forced to receive this unasked for general mailing. WitchVox has adopted a ZERO tolerance stance for this type of behavior and will continue to do everything in our power to keep "the takers" from using our community listings for unsolicited MASS Emailings.

UPDATE: Bob Barr Tries Again: A proposed amendment to Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2000 (H.R. 2561) offered by Mr. Barr of Georgia last week reads: "Amendment No. 1.-None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used to provide assistance to the practice of witchcraft or Wicca, as defined by the encyclopedia of American Religions, on any Military installation or vessel".

The Barr amendment didn't get included in the final approved version of the bill. Whether it will be an issue later as the House and Senate bring the appropriations bill into conference remains unknown. What IS known is that Barr will continue his attack against pagan religions. This information had many buzzing last week and thanks to Tara Miller we offer some powerful thoughts as well as explanations on how this is proceeding... Visit Bob Tries to Sneak One In for details.

Explosive Rewrite of the WitchVox Links Pages: As we alluded to this past week, our Pagan links section is just coming out of a major rewrite. We put another 35 hours of coding and restructuring into this section and the "shell" is looking good and acting smart. Our thanks go out to the many of you that helped us debug this upgrade.

If you haven't been over there do check it out, We have added 16 new categories and have moved hundreds of listings into them. If YOUR Web Site already listed on the WitchVox links pages you may want to see if you are categorized properly. If not visit the WitchVox Websites Submissions Form to render your listing "correct and for the good of all".

Search Engines that Fall Short: This Saturday I spent an aggressive 12 hours playing with and analyzing the latest in Cgi based web site search engines (8 of them). WitchVox is clearly in need of a proper one and it seems that every few months I go back and check out the latest. We have some very powerful databases that run most of what we do here, they can do just about anything we want and we are very demanding of them. ALL of the Cgi based search engines came up a 1/2 mile short of our hopes, dreams and future plans... We do know of a way to host our databases live and release their power to the masses but this involves buying a static IP from "Road Runner" at a cost of 340 buckaroos per month. DSL is about half that but even 150 is a "no can do" with our typical balance. Again, we continue to wait for an affordable, high speed static IP connection. Never the less, do look for a WitchVox search engine with limited power in the near future.

Look for the latest in Daily Community and Religious news at Wren's Nest and allow us to wish you all a safe and prosperous week. As we stated earlier in this update, Mercury goes direct on Thursday (Yeah!) so be very careful until then. May the love of the Great ones be always with your spirit.

Always in your service.
